10 Miles west of Dunning on US Highway 2 sits the village of Halsey, Nebraska. Flowing past the village on its south side is the Middle Loup River. 14 miles north of the village rests the even smaller community of Purdum with the North Loup River running past it. Connecting the two is a 14 mile ribbon of very smooth blacktop with more curves than a 40 foot python. On August 9 this road will become part of the 12th annual Sandhills Open Road Challenge and will be known as the” Loup 2 Loup Open Road Race.”
SORC "Lifers" who have participated in at least two of the last three events, and who enter the 2012 SORC, will be first in line for the fifty grid slots. Grid slots not filled by Lifers will be offered to drivers who were selected for the grid from the October registration and who have also participated in two of the last three SORC’s. Three classes will be offered with target speeds of 75, 85, and 95 MPH. Tech speeds are 100 for the 75 class, and 120 MPH for the 85, and 95 class. 85 MPH entrants must have successfully completed the 100-110 class with successful completion of the 115-120 for the 95. Entry fees are $225.00, $250.00, and $275.00. Navigator fee is $50.00. Cars in the 75 MPH class must comply with the rules established for the SORC 80-95 MPH class. 85 MPH entrants are governed by the 100-115 MPH class. Cars in the 95 MPH class fall under the rules set forth for the SORC 120 class. Tech inspection and number application for the Loup 2 Loup entries only will be held on August 8 at the Smith farm west of Arnold. Lodging and meals are available in Halsey and nearby Thedford. Community support of the event is high and will be greatly enhanced by drivers patronizing local businesses. Wow. This must be tougher than the race if the regs are this tight.

Since our car doesn't run 140 in the mile, I guess we're in the 85 mph class.
Not sure what running 140 in the mile has to do with a 120 Tech speed... but it still sounds like fun. I guess we'll have to come up a day or two early to program the rally computer.

Dear Mr. Chris & Mr. Verson 2,
Chris' car has always ran faster than 140 in the mile, has it not? Anyway, we are being cautious the first year with speeds and the number in the grid. There are no long straits(?) to make up speed and there are some very tight turns. One of our most successful drivers says that he does not think he can average 100 MPH on the road. The video is good but does not give a true perspective of the turns. If you pay close attention you will notice that the turn past the house on the west side of the road, about eight miles in, is very long. Some are off camber and a couple are very tight. Since this is our first year we are pulling the rules from the 2012 SORC rule book. Depending on what we learn this year we may establish some modified rules for future events. Our main emphasis is safety, and manageability so that the folks from Thomas County get off to a good start in running the event. Mr. Nice |

Dear Mr. Thughes,
Your just like Roseanne Roseanne Adana "if its not one thing its another." It's always the little details with you. Since "Lifers" have until February 1 to register we have to wait until then. We will have an updated registration form that will be posted on the site soon. After Lifer registration is done then we will begin the process of going down the list of folks who are on the grid to fill any remaining slots. I didn't over look this I just wanted to see if anyone was paying attention. Mr. Nice |

Sorry Mr. N, I meant the 1/2 mile. 140 in the 1/2 mile, the new requirement for the 120 mph class. No problem with us running the 85 mph class, either. We pre-run big bend @ 75 mph, so we have 118 miles of data for a tire growth factor @ 75. This year we'll collect 50 miles or so of data @ 85 mph. If you need the new course measured to 3 decimal places + or - .003 miles @ 85 mph, we should be able to do that for you by August 8th.

Can we assume this will become a regularly scheduled event? Perhaps a spring event?
With the grid filling very easily with lifers and those already in the 12, it would be a shame for someone who has attended the two previous SORCs but was not fortunate enough to get picked for grid in October to now have another race he has no chance of attending. Loup to loup ORR in the spring, with a new lifer system, and SORC in august. Sounds like a win-win! No matter how it turns out, sounds like a blast !! |

Don't forget the Optima group also. I think that they've become hooked as well.

Dear Mr. Toolman,
If things go well we plan on the Loup 2 Loup becoming a permanent event in the SORC with a grid number to match. The SORC board will not sponsor a separate "stand alone" event. Mr. Nice |

'with a grid number to match'
Do you mean there will be the same amount of slots? 100 for SORC=100 for LOUP? Or do you mean entry into the SORC = entry into the LOUP? |

Lastly, assuming there is a tiny small chance of the slots not being filled by April 2, any chance of opening it up to those not fortunate enough to have made it in for SORC 12?

I would vote for a Spring Event and the possibility of adding another shootout in the spring as well.

Wow! That road looks great! Nice new ZR 1 taking the video as well
Going to be quite the busy week for everyone involved. My hat is off to the SORC board and all of the volunteers who have made this the absolute most coveted open road race event in the country

Put my name down for the lottery if it doesn't fill with lifers!
Wouldn't even know what class i would want into without seeing the road first hand. This is a great addition to the already amazing race!! Might just have to start taking the entire week off and spending it with the fine folks of Arnold. |

It's only 12.1 miles from the center of Halsey to the Center of Purdum, so the actual race will likely be around 11 miles each way.

Dear Mr. Chris,
I had accepted the highway sign that shows Purdum being 14 miles north of highway 2. After you brought this to our attention I checked the grid map and spoke to Ted this morning and confirmed that the distance is indeed less than 13 miles. Although I have driven the road a number of times I never did really check my mileage. Guess I was having too much fun. Please keep in mind that the center of either town isn't more than 20 feet from its village boundaries. Anyway, in the next 60 days, probably a lot less, we will have the start-finish lines established so that folks can make accurate course notes. Mr. Nice |

To make the Race longer, you can Add a 65mph average From Thedford or Duning with Nebraska's finest patrolling Hwy 2 to ensure there were no cheaters, then do a flying start onto the high speed portion of the course.
The West Texas race in Midland had a 90 degree intersection left turn in it and the slide through the gravelled intersection was one of the most memorable in ORR. Texas farmers can't, but I bet Nebraska farmers can turn out enough haybails to catch any wayward corvettes. Of course factoring 2 different average speeds puts people without a rally computer at a distinct disadvantage... but then so does an 85 mph average speed....

So, going with this extended route, the question would be how to bank 15 minutes on the first leg to compesate for the time it takes for the nice officer to write the ticket on the return leg.

Hello Racers,
We mapped out the Loup 2 Loup ORR course on Saturday, January 7th, and will consult with MrNice on the start and finish lines. It looks to be a fun event and we are excited to be putting this on. If for some reason you cannot be in the Loup 2 Loup race, but are in the SORC race, we invite you to attend the Loup 2 Loup ORR and see how challenging this road will be. I think you will be hooked even if you are not racing! Part of our board will be at the winter event in Lincoln, NE. We look forward to meeting you then or in August, 2012.

Just to keep hope alive, I was offered it the other day, but had to turn it down due to travel reasons. I'm not even near a lifer either.

Having driven the Loup2Loup course twice at road speed, I feel compelled to express a cautionary note to all participants: VIDEOS DO NOT DEPICT ACURATELY THE DIFFICULTY OF THIS COURSE! The south half of the course is a roller coaster of hills and turns.
I do not believe that I am capable of approaching 95 mph on this part of the course. I fear that anyone who tries it is risking an accident. The north half is somewhat less difficult, but turns over the crest of several hills still represent a threat to anyone who does not exercise due caution. Everyone who is entered in this new event should visit the course ahead of time and drive it several times at road speed. Only then can you appreciate it's level of difficulty. I and my nav, Tim Smith, entered the 95 mph class, thinking that our experience in the 120 class of the regular course is good preparation. Viewing the video gave us confidence. But when we drove the course, we were shocked at the difference between what we expected and what we saw. We have now dropped to the 85 mph class, and have doubts that we can average that. The south half of the course offers no opportunity to reach tech speed let alone hold it for any distance. The north half is somewhat better, but does not offer an opportunity to make up significant time. For this first year of the Loup2Loup we need to insure that the event is accident free, so that it can be a great success and have a bright future. I fear that anyone who attempts to average 95 mph is risking not only their own safety but also the future of the event. I would not be disappointed if the SORC Board would drop the 95 mph class completely for this first year. These are my opinions and mine alone. Additional comments, pro or con, are welcome. Have the Start finish lines for each leg been determined, yet?
From google Earth, it looks like the course will be about 11.7 - 11.8 miles north, and about 11 miles south If both the starts and finishes move during the break to maximize the distance. If the north finish is the south start, maybe 10.9 miles south. From Google, the best Place for a Video Camera might be 3.5 miles north of the south start on the southbound run its a blind right over a crest. That appears to be the corner most likely to be personally named after the event.

Dear Mr. Bigjohnvette,
The L2L is 11.6 miles both ways. Start and finish lines are marked with an orange "X" near the right side shoulder and will have a solid line from side to side later this week when I make a trip to Halsey. Course notes are the responsibility of entrant. We made course notes for the SORC in it's first year. However, when we had several folks take issue with the way they were done we stopped giving them out. Mr. Nice |
