2012 has been the driest summer on record for many years here in the Nebraska sandhills. Since mid-June the Arnold Volunteer Fire Department, and many other local departments, have fought grass fires for all but 10 days. The governing board of the SORC recognizes the concerns of local land owners and that the fire hazard is great.
The SORC has received a number of inquiries from several sources asking if the event has been canceled. Some land owners have been adamant in their demand that 2012 SORC be scrubbed. The short answer to these inquiries is no, the 2012 SORC will be held as scheduled. The long answer is that if the fire trucks must leave to fight fires at another location the event must be halted. Although such a situation is unlikely there have been numerous grass fires this year that have required fire departments to render aid from as far as 150 miles away. If we do not have fire protection in place we do not have an event. The SORC governing board has undertaken proactive steps to deal with the unlikely cancellation of the 2012 SORC. Entrants who are unwilling to chance that the event could be canceled from the lack of fire protection can opt out of the event and have their entry rolled into a guaranteed 2013 grid slot or receive a refund. Entrants who opt for the refund are not guaranteed a 2013 slot and must resubmit their entry. I want to emphasize that the chance of cancellation is very small and we are confident that we will conduct a quality event. Two weeks remain before the SORC and a little rain will render our concerns moot. I plan on being at the start line on August 11. I hope to see everyone there? Mr. Nice |

Thanks.
I personally would rather show up with a chance of it being cancelled than not show up and find out I missed it. Unless it is officially cancelled we will be there. Chris |

Mr. Nice,
I will also be there unless I get prior word of cancellation. This is a wise precautionary statement, and I agree with the seriousness of the situation. The landowners' concerns are valid. I hope it rains between now and then. I hope there is adequate fire protection in place. If a cancellation at the last minute or during the event is required, I will understand. Either way, the trip is worthwhile if only to see friends in Arnold and from around the country. THANK YOU soooo much to the firefighters who give their time and talent each year to help make this event the success that it has become! And to all the other volunteers as well, THANK YOUI! May SORC 2012 be held as planned, and be safe and fire free. Bill Kuiper Grand Phooey Team OCA |

I'm all i as well - either way - remember to make sure all fire extinguishers are full and maybe through in some extras in and keep an evil eye out for anything that could cause a problem .. .. ..

Gentlemen
We are coming to Arnold, period. Life is full of possibilities, I don't believe in worry about what might happen. If the worst happened, we would still see our friends, visit Arnold again, and still have a great time. Ray |

Racing is fun and fulfills my need for speed though I really come to have a beer with friends.

The race itself is becoming a smaller and smaller part of why we come (speaking for most here). After missing the last 2 years...Unless I am on fire

So, if we do attend, and the race is cancelled because proper fire protection is not available, how is that going to be handled?

If one or the other, or both, of the events are cancelled once all the participants have arrived in Arnold, do they receive the same offer of a paid spot in the 2013 event or a refund/reapplication?
Thanks, Jim |

The following comments are not official:
It is my understanding that once the event begins and is scrubbed because of conditions beyond our control there are no refunds. If the race were to be cancelled before the event starts we would offer drivers the choice of rolling their entry into 2013 or a refund. Again, I am reasonably certain about this but can not speak for the board without a consensus vote. The only way the event would be cancelled is if our fire departments are pulled to fight fires at another location. Mr. Nice |
