Navigators?

This will be my first time if I get selected. I've got my application ready to go except for the navigator part because I dont know who I would bring. Can that part be added later? Should I pay it now and put down "to be determined" or how should I do that?

I'll be first in line at the post office on October 1.

Thanks
Jay

Re: Navigators?

Jay,

I am far from being in charge but my experience has been that you can add a navigator later. If it were me, I would send my application to get in the race. Then, worry about whether or not I would have a navigator later.

I do reccommend a navigator on that road, especially for the first time out. Some of the racers use locals as navigators if they don't bring one along.

Good luck getting in and if you do, you'll have a ball.

Re: Navigators?

You can always add a navigator at the last minute. Last year I signed up with my wife as my navigator in October. Then Dec 31st we found out we were going to be having our first child. Figuring she was out of the race I changed navigators to my father. Then our baby was born very early and my wife decided she wanted back in the race. So I changed it back to her and figured I was good to go. As the date got closer she decided that maybe she should stay home with our daughter and was back out of the race. I ended up racing both the Loup 2 Loup and SORC race without a Navigator. I did pretty good in the Loup 2 Loup and my North Run in the SORC was the best I had ever done (within a second). Coming back South I just banked to much time in the straights and could not slow down enough before the finish.

All that said I had a great time and nobody to blame. In years past I had used a navigator and we always managed to have some discussions during the race. You really don't need a navigator just run the course a few times and you should be good. Navigators can help but you also may find yourself trying to do way more in the car when you really should just be having fun and driving the road. Just my two cents.

What I really enjoyed at the end of the race was watching all the drivers talk about how their navigator messed up the stopwatch, notes, check marks. While I just sat there and enjoyed their "discussions".

Re: Navigators?

The one year I ran the course solo, I came away with a new found respect for the drivers that never use Navigators! There is a lot to do in there by yourself. The road should command your total attention yet at times you have to look at your watch, check your times, and keep track where you are on course.
Having a navigator lets you keep track of driving while somebody else tells you whats coming next (left bend over hill), to speed up or slow down, or even just to calm down (I tend to ask for times too often!)
Besides, why keep the fun all to yourself? I've brought 4 different navigators to the SORC and they have all had a Blast!
And yeah, you can add or change navigators
