GPS unit

What are you recommendations for GPS unit to use that will measure to the tenths for MPH over 100MPH?

Thanks!

Re: GPS unit

Garmin III or Garmin III+

usually between $25-100 used on Ebay. By now, the watch battery inside them that keeps their memory has long since died, but its not too hard to take one apart and wire in a new watch battery, so it's good for another 10 years.

You need to fix this if you want to use it for racing.

I recommend using a modern GPS for actual speed and distance measurements, and use the GIII for average speed and travel time, only.

Re: GPS unit

I have a bunch of Watch batteries with solder tabs that are Lithium and 225 mAh, which is more than twice the original, so they might last 20 years.

If anyone has a Garmin III and are getting a "low battery signal" with fresh batteries, you need to solder in a new battery, or it might lose the info when you switch it off crossing the finish line.

I can send out a battery for $5.00 shipped

Re: GPS unit

Are there any other brand of GPS that will display the avg driving mph to the tenth over 100mph?

Re: GPS unit

Not that anyone has found, yet.

Everyone still seems to use GIII's and GIII+'s.

Re: GPS unit

Hey guys we are first timers and really excited about making it in. Trying to figure out what we need as far as GPS. When you are referring to the Garmin III is that the street pilot model?

Re: GPS unit

No not the street pilot. Just the regular Garmin III or III+ with the black and white screen.

Re: GPS unit

OK thanks. I think I found one but it doesn't come with the interface cable. I know I can buy one seperately but they cost as much as the unit itself!

Re: GPS unit

I think you can find the 12 volt power cord for less than $20 on EBAY or just use the batteries. They last plenty long enough for the race.

I've used the Garmin III plus for several years and it gets you close, then the stopwatch will help you win.

I've always thought the Garmin will get you close enough to get lucky. Everyone is getting so good at timing, you need to be within .5 of a second to win in most classes. Sometimes, closer than that. :smash1:

Re: GPS unit

Do you have any mapping issues with these older units? I'm guessing there is no way to update it through Garmin.

Re: GPS unit

Updating is not usually a problem. You are probably only going to use this GPS for road racing.
