A bird in my garden
I’m not sure if I posted in the right place so fell free to move this... ^^

I found this bird in my garden and I don't understand anything about birds. It looked hurt. I tried to approach it, but it flew away. What should I have to do? I just wanted to help.

I would be grateful if you could give me some tips on how to proceed, because I live in a place full of trees and there are a lot of birds here everyday.

And could you tell me what bird is this?

Re: A bird in my garden
OMG!! That's a lutino Peach Faced Love Bird Agapornis roseicollis roseicollis. :yikes: Here I was expecting to see some fancy South American Tropical bird and when the picture finally loaded (the first one) I was shocked to see a pet bird. Normal peach faced lovebirds are native to Africa and are popular pet birds. This must have been someone's pet that has escaped. That's why he doesn't look happy. Lutino refers to the color mutation in this case a yellow bird. Because he's a color mutation I can tell he's a recent escape since if he'd been born in the wild the young revert to the normal green. It's probably hard for him to find food since he doesn't know what he can eat. Best thing for you to do to try to catch him is put a cage out with an open door and put water and parakeet seed from the store in it. If you can rig the door so it will close after he goes in it would be good. It sounds crazy but life in the wild is hard and he'll probably be happy to see a cage with food since he'll remember that cages are for food and comfort. Good luck with that. I hope you can catch him and either take him yourself or try to find his owner or a good home.

Here's a site with some good basic info on their background.

Re: A bird in my garden
That's pretty! I was trying to see if it hads been ringed on the say the foot you can't see. The closest I've seen one was in a petstore, where occasionally when you go they've have an escapee, looking sad on top of the aviaries. I went one day and there was a bird, which I can't remember if it was a parrot or love bird.

is it me or do the tail feathers look short? Maybe it's just the picture.

One day we had what like a lavendar finch in our garden, which was slightly tame. My mum did the open cage trick, but we never managed to get it. I did keep landing but wouldn't go in. My mum said that she might've been able to catch it had she had a net, so she bought one after. We never did see it again after that which was a shame.

The tail is normal sized. Lovebirds have stubby tails like that. The rings or as Americans say leg bands are put on by the breeder. So if he didn't have it from a young age he probably won't have. I can't tell if he's wearing one or not. Oh and a warning if you do catch him lovebirds bite pretty hard so be sure to use gloves.

Wow, that's a really cool looking bird! :yikes: I'm not much of an expert when it comes to birds, only had one in my entire life, but I hope you take care of it or find it a good home. :number1:

Oh, no... this is a bad new....

I thought that was a wild bird, but if it is a pet, then it just fled from its owner. And I could not help... I have no cages in my house.
I have a very small house full of fruits for the birds in my garden, perhaps it found the fruits.
I hope it found it's way back to home...

Oh no. That's too bad. I hope someone finds him and takes him in. These birds eat seed and he probably doesn't know what is good to eat. Few birds that escape into the wild survive because of this. I hope he will be ok.

Re: A bird in my garden
Also if they're brightly coloured in countries where most of the native birds are dull coloured (brown, black, grey) they don't fear well against some of the other birds particularly bigger ones like crows and magpies. And sometimes also the colder weather, if they've escaped from indoors or a heated aviary.

And this is another bird, it got into the house through one barely-open window. The picture is not very good. Then I opened the windows and terrace doors, and the bird flew away

Re: A bird in my garden
I've never seen a mocking bird before as far as I remember, so I don't know what one looks like.

We've had birds get into our house before. My dad had company over one day and he told me that while they were sitting in the living room chatting he looked in the hallway and saw a blackbird on the floo, which looked like it had walked in. I think he heard a small tapping type noise on the lino. It then quickly left when it saw him.

We used to get a very cheeky European robin come in. It would sit on the back door ledge until we opened the backdoor and if the backdoor was left open it would come in. It seemed to know where the kitchen was because it would go in there. One day it got shut in when we went out, as we didn't realise it had come in. When we got back it was flying around in my mum and dad's room.

Occasionally we get startled starlings come down our chimney and my dad has to let them out. When they come down and I hear them falling down then flapping and sometimes making a noise it really frightens the life out of me and makes me nervous. I really hate it when that happens.

The picture is really bad, so I have edited the post above. Now there is another picture (bad again) - It was very hard to photograph that bird!

And this is another bird... what do you think about it?

Ah what a beautiful bird, I love birds of prey. Is it a Kestrel or Falcon or something?

Still not sure about the bird under the couch but WOW that's a Peregrine Falcon! Was he just standing on the side of your house? That's awesome. That's the fastest animal on earth. In a dive they can reach speeds up to 200 mph! They mostly kill other birds but will take small mammals too. The Peregrine is wide spread and found on many continents.

:yikes: Wow such peircing eyes. I wonder if they have a nest since he's always there. BTW you should read my recent journal entry Marsh 15, 2007 about how I fed some mice to a Cooper's Hawk. I have pictures and it was an amazing experience.

I'm back.

Yes, it is really wonderful...! I will read the journal entry, thanks!

Now I have a new picture. This is a dove, I think, outside on my house's wall. It only appears at night.
