The Glory of True Metal
My favorite type of music is heavy metal. After getting into metal you shall never go back to American Radio again. I love it bcause the lyrics aren't 100% about love and break ups and make ups like pop is. They deal with wonderful topics, like space travel, space battles, ghost stories, knights, kings and dragons, conquering, flight and so much more. :borg: My favorite are the conceptual albums where each song is a chapter. I'll be adding more to this post as I transfer over links to mp3s from the other board. I'm sure Plankton will want to add his imput since he knows so much more than I do. So if you want to know what I'm talking about join us in this thread. Rock on \m/ :headbanger:

Re: The Glory of True Metal

Power metal is my fav' form of metal too. Very good powerful and beautiful music created my musicians that know how to truely play their instruments. Also, many Power M' band's singers can really sing! Squidwardd was right about the lyrical subject matter. Very galactic, mid-evil, and glorious. There is such diversity, that there is bound to be a form of metal that best fits you. Here are some forms of true metal with a brief discription;

"Traditional Metal" (these are the earlier bands like Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Accept, Scorpions etc..)

"Thrash Metal" (This was the 1st form of metal I listened to. Fast and furious with gruff vocals and violent subject matter. Bands like; Overkill, early Metallica, Exodus, Forbidden etc..)

"Power Metal" (Fast melodic and glorious. Usually clear vocals and double bass drums thundering away. Sometimes symphonic, possitive, and uplifting. Bands like; Helloween, Gamma ray, Nightwish, Blind Guardian, Hammerfall, Kamelot, Stratovarius etc..)

"Doom Metal" (Much slower, depressive and gloomy. Great to listen to if you are down. Usually has operatic vocals and heavy guitars. Bands like; Candlemass, Memory Garden, Veni Domine, and Solitude Aeturnus.)

"Progressive metal" (Sort of like Power metal, but not usually as fast. It has more New Age-like soundscapes. More keyboards and even has some jazz elements. A very unique sound indeed. Bands like; Symphony X, Dream Theatre, Vanden Plas etc..)

"Neo-Classical Metal" (A very guitar oriented metal indeed. Many classical music passages are heard on the guitars. Stuff like Beethoven, Mosart and Bach are played on the guitar at break-neck speeds. Imagin Fur Elise put to clean sounding heavy metal and you got an idea. Bands like; Yngwie Malmsteen, Majestic, Impellitteri etc..)

"Death metal" (Very heavy metal where the vocals are growled and not sung. The music is like Thrash, but with more distortion on the guitars. The subject matter is right out of a horror movie. Gore, death and other subjects of the like. Very brutal indeed. Bands like; Obituary, Sepultura, Goreguts, and Immolation.)

"Black metal" (Kind of like death metal but the vocals are not a low growl. They are a higher pitch screech. The music has more elagance than death metal and the subect matter is usually very dark. That is why it is called Black metal. Sometimes more symphonic and majestic. Bands like; Agathodiamond, Lord Belial, Emperor, Immortal and Siebenburgen.)

"Melodic death" (a form of death metal where their is more melody and class. Sort of a cross between Black metal, Death metal and Power metal. Awesome stuff, imo. Bands like; In Flames, Children of Bodom, Dark Tranquillity, and Edge of Sanity.)

"Industrial metal" (Has a lot more groove and bass. Sounds electronic and has many sound samples from various movies. Vocals are often distorted and agressive. Bands like; Brainchild, Ministry etc..)

Here are many links to free, legal true metal;

http://www.hardradio.com/framemusic.html On this page, I recommend "Angel Dust", "Firewind", "Iron Savior", "Primal Fear", "Steel Prophet" and "Valley's Eve.

http://www.limb-music.de/limb.cgi This is a great page because this is a record label that distributes a lot of the bands I love! You can download complete songs in high quallity. On this page I recommend; "Gallowglass", "Luca Turilli", "Pagan's Mind", "Total Eclipse", "Zandelle", "ShadowKeep" and "Oratory".

http://www.noexit.net/html/bands.shtml Go nuts on this page. Almost all of these bands are great!

The following links are for MP3.com so you can download them or just listen to them as Real Audio files.

http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/5/blind_guardian.html This page is just dedicated to Blind Guardian. A bombastic, melodic power metal band with many Mid-evil themes. One of the most famous metal bands in the world you never heard of.

http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/123/dragonheart.html Dragonforce. Great melodic Power metal.

http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/277/nightwish.html Nightwish. Symphonic power metal with female opera vocals. Again, another world famous band America has no clue about.

http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/336/power_quest.html Power Quest is a new band to the scene but are already making waves

Tristania is Norwegian goth metal - good songs are "Angina", "Heretique", and "World of Glass".

There have been soooo many new releases in the world of True metal lately, that it would be impossible to list them all. Lord Plankton/Squidwardd: I know this post got started back in January, but I am just now reading Lord Plankton's breakdown on the metal genre. That "essay" has got to be the most informative piece on metal I've ever seen. I had no idea there were so many different kinds...something for everyone!

Looking at the list, it looks like I'd enjoy Neo-Classical and Industrial Metals. The Frink Soundtrack gave me the best workout I've had in a long time...whooooooooeeeeeee! That is some sweet music, Squidwardd. Kamelot was a personal fave, but they ALL had good sound and a raging fast tempo...I LOVE that! I don't know what I had in mind when I was thinking of Metal, but this completely shattered anything I WAS thinking of!

Lord Plankton: The link to the Neo Classic metal was being squirrely, but I got to the Galactic link fine. It was really something to hear this lightning-fast tempo and then have a chorus in the background singing the refrain. Wish they had a dedicated station here in the midwest that played that 24-7.

OH I am so glad!! THIS is why we are always spreading the word of true metal to as many as we can and are happy that we have another convert to add to the list. Americans have NO clue what metal is since they are only exposed to that nu-metal and alterno crap. I'm so glad you liked the Innocence Lost soundtrack since it fit the story so well. Kamelot is a wonderful band. I love how their songs are so sad yet beautiful. Melodic and symphonic metal is incredible when they mix classical instruments with chants or choral/operatic voices. I am so happy about this. Getting responses like yours makes it all worth it.

Or if you want, Squidwardd and I can just make you some mix disks of songs along those lines that you would like. Just PM us. Like Squidwardd said it's always good to show someone what metal can really be, and not the stereo type but what it really is.

Many people think thank it's just three chords and screaming (that would be acid rock like ac/dc) but in fact metal can be very orchestrated and complex. I'm glad that you saw that. If you're interested just write us. Thanks again for the kind words, I'll bring you some more links.

I think Lord Plankton said it best: lost of people think it's just "three chords and screaming" and lyrics like "Kiss the devil! Kiss the devil!" when in fact, the lyrics in most of the Frink soundtrack songs are deeper than most classical poetry I've read.

Re: The Glory of True Metal
Squidwardd, you were right. I checked out some Christian Metal and loved it! My favourite band is Living Sacrifice, and they ARE NOT nu-metal. They've been around since 1989 and they're very diverse. Their first album was a thrash metal CD that was like Slayer. Their Second Cd was pure death metal where the vocals were so weird. Their vocalist DJ growled the vocals in an undecipherable slurring roar that was very unique. You can hear samples at amazon.com, their first cd was living sacrifice, and the second one was called nonexistant. Their 3rd Cd, "Inhabit" was a mix of the too styles, and the vocalist went back to the roaring shout/yell/scream but alot lower. it's death metal with a touch of doom. these cd's are all very, very technical cd's in the guitar work. the 4th cd, "reborn" changed the sound. they got a new vocalist, who roared and screamed in a more hardcore-ish way. my favourite cd with their original guitarist. very technical, very heavy. the 5th album "the hammering process" they got a new guitarist, rocky gray, who is the greatest guitarist under 35 in the music scene. he pulls off these incredible riffs that no average guitarist could pull off. this cd they got more hardcore, they got a percussionist who did tribal beats, and this cd had some singing in it. very different. their last cd before they broke up was called "conceived in fire" and it had more percussion that was like "Stomp" music and only one song with singing. the cd was very good. go listen to samples on amazon.com, go to www.livingsacrifice.com and find out more, and go to your nearest christian book store and buy some cd's! and don't judge them because they're christian, trust me, this is good stuff!

Hey Toon'

I was with LS from the begining! I bought their 1st album when it was new when they sounded like a Christian version of slayer(Thrash metal). Their 2nd album was gutteral Death metal and the 3rd was more like atmospheric Death metal. I loved the 3rd album! Everything after that was more Hardcore. Nothing wrong with it but I was more into the melodic stuff.

gotta ressurect this thread...

i love metal, any kind so long as its brutal, not nu metal (limp bizkit, papa roach etc), and definately not whatever HIM defines themselves as.

anyway, i love pantera, slayer, system of a down, slipknot (take away the gimicks and thats one brutal band, amazing live), sepultura, machine head, iron maiden, metallica, motorhead, the probot album, tool, megadeth, rage against the machine, + more

i went to Download (formerly Monsters of Rock or Ozzfest) at Donnington park last year, saw many brutal bands, including one of only 2 uk gigs Damageplan did, hearing about Dimebag Darrel was shattering.

im so happy i got to see Rage before they split up...not too sure on Audioslave, but i love soundgarden to bits.

I like most forms of metal at least a little.
I pretty much refuse to listen to any black metal, and with death metal, it depends a great deal on the music.
Thrash is another genre I don't care a lot for, but I do have a few bands I listen to.
Tradiotnal, doom, power, progressive, symphonic, a little goth, and 70's/80's hard rock make up my musical tastes.
One band I would highly recommend if you haven't heard of them yet is a band from Finland name Nightwish....be warned though....the idiots have fired the singer that they had. She has the voice of an angel singing almost gothic lyrics.

Oh no. How come you don't like black metal? I love it. In fact I can sing black metal and sound just like Danni Filth. I have all of Nightwish's CDs and actually they weren't stupid to fire her. She was becoming a total b$%^& wanting to travel alone in her own plane and not on the bus with the band. Basically she was developing a god complex. I don't care how good you are you don't do that to your band because a band is a TEAM and needs to stick together. They did the right thing getting rid of her and hopefully that will help deflate that big ego of hers. Yes she was good, but there are many other talented female opera singers out there. It would be awesome if they could get Sarah Brightman as a replacement. That would rule. :number1:

Re: The Glory of True Metal
Actually, I don't put a blanket dislike on all black metal. If it is just dealing with dark material, ok, I might like some of it now and then depending on the vocalist. However, if the subject matter is Satanism, and they are expressing a sincere belief in that, then they are diametrically opposed to everything I believe in and I will not listen to such stuff.
We'll just have to disagree about Nightwish. If there are so many singers out there, why are they still hunting for one? My dislike with the whole situation has a lot to do with the manner of how they fired her. I can't argue she was acting a prima donna, but then how many other stars, whether vocalists or musicians have succumbed to that? If you are unhappy with somebody to that degree, have the guts to tell them to their face rather than let them know via a letter.
