(one for you Squidwardd) but to all do you have a favourite species of bird? If so what is it and what do you love about it? My favourite tame/aviary birds are cockateels, parrots and cockatoos. I love the way that they talk, can be loving and are quite funny. You can try and teach them tricks.
My favourite wildbird is an owl. I think that they are cute and I love the way they sometimes move their heads. One day I saw a baby Little owl and it was about the size of the palm of my hand. |

Hey cool thread big fan. My favorite bird has got to be the budgie.
I would love to go to Australia and see wild flocks flying around. After the budgie would be the big macaws. As far as wild birds go that's hard. Perhaps the Golden Eagle or the Steller's Sea Eagle.Oh, blue birds are very nice. They are members of the thrush family and related to American Robins. I prefer the Easter Blue Bird over the Western.

I like parakeets. They're adorable. I use to have 2. One was a white/yellow color, and the other was a green/yellow color. But sadly we got rid of them because my mom didn't like them.

Oh that's a lousy excuse to get rid of a bird. Birds are a serious responsiblity that people shouldn't just take lightly or buy on impulse. Birds are also very demanding and the owner needs to be prepared for that. But yes budgies are so cool.

I have another favourite bird that I really
now. It all started when I worked at the nursery. Often when I use to start in the afternoon I'd be walking past the fence and see these two identical looking figures sitting like bookends. They looked very ornamental like. Sometimes I'd be walking and see one on the ground waddling and sometimes making this really cute little tweeting noise. I use to hate it when they'd be in the road. They were a pair of adorable little Wagtails, which I use to miss if I didn't see them. I thought it was so cute the way they use to sit on that fence.

What family are Wagtails in? I'd love to see a pic of them. I've gone crazy over a new bird too. I've recently become obsessed with American Robins. They only come down here to Florida in the winter so I think they are really cool and miss them when they are gone.

Here a pic of a Wagtail similar to the ones I've seen:
wagtail Here's the RSPB (UK bird preservation) site Wagtail links to info on a few breeds. wagtail I'm also looking on the British Birds site. I don't know much about Wagtails and the site links don't say that they are in a family if you know what I mean. My guessing is that Wagtail is the English family name and they are a family of their own. They are called Wagtail because their tails wag up and down. I do have a book somewhere, which I may never find and havn't seen for ages. I will try and look on the net more when I have more time. Looking on the British Birds site just reminded me of Wrens, which are the Smallest British bird. I've seen a pic of an American Robin before and long time ago. I think I remember what they look like. We use to have an English Robin that use to come and sit on our back door ledge, waiting for someone to put some porrige oats or cheese in our conservatory. We then use to open the back door and it would come in. One time it got shut in our house and went into the bedrooms. Another time it decided to go and have a look in our kitchen

Sorry to double post but I saw this little chap wondering around my town centre late this morning and had to take a few photos of it. (Thank goodness I didn't get rid of my small digi camera):
wagtail wagtail I also took a video of it. I was supprised how close I and other people got to it and was worried that it was going to get stepped on. People were passing it very close and it didn't even move out of the way.

Aw it's really cute! They look kind of like a finch or something. I saw a finch in a pet store I went in yesterday and they are really cute!

Oh thanks for sharing those pics. So cute. Wagtails are members of the perching bird order (which is the largest.) or the passeriformes. They are in the family Motacillidae. They are native only to the old world. The one in the pic is probably a pied wagtail which is a British subspecies of the white wagtail. Yes this can get confusing. The colors remind me of our Carolina Chickadee. You guys have Blue Tits which are related to Chickadees.
Oh and since you were asking about American Robins Turdus migratorius here's a little info on them. They are beautiful birds and lay really pretty blue eggs. The one in the pic is a male. Females have brown heads. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Robin

Cool. You like a lot of the birds that I do. Lately I've been getting very excited over American Robins, Easter Bluebirds and hummingbirds. Unfortunately I don't see enough of any of these birds in my area.

I forgot about this thread. Anyway on the Robin subject I thought I'd post about the European Robin. They're what I'd consider as the tamest wild bird species and can become quite cheeky. They get quite close to humans, if they get tame through feeding and being around usually gardeners (which is sometimes when they find worms). last year one of my nextdoor neighbours had a robin land on their dad's back when he was in the garden. I saw a bird program on television and the presenter (I think it was Bill Oddie, anyone of you lot overseas know who he is?) had a robin eating from his hand. Sometimes I hear a bird singing throughout the night, which I think is a robin.

I LOVE European Robins. They are so round and cute. Here the tame birds are Chickadees, Steller's Jays and in Florida (if you can find them because they are rare) Scrub Jays. They'll eat out of your hand.
I've been thinking about trying to start a post on a species profile may-be once or twice a week on the bird garden forum to get some activity going in there.

The only bird I've ever had as a pet was a little parakeet, Petey.
Lots of different wild birds are really cool. Cardinals are gorgeous, I love seeing those. As for more exotic ones I also like flamingoes and swans a whole lot. And...penguins! Hee, they're cute.

They are. :3 I used to only call them parakeets but now I refer to them interchangeably as budgies too. Petey looked a lot like the one on the top left corner of your sig pic.

Aww so he was a normal green. That's the color they are in the wild. Budgie is such a cute word too and fun to say over and over.

Oh, that's interesting, so they've only been bred in different colors in captivity then?

Yep. All those pretty colors are chosen by man. The normal wild ones are green.
