My mom has a bunch of hanging petunias from our roof in pots. About a month ago, a bird made a nest in one of the pots with petunias around it, probably for protection and ease of nest materials, I guess. The bird laid eggs, and now there are little birds in my mom's flowers. Is this normal for birds to do that? They are always hanging around our house.
A year ago in early spring, a robin made a nest under our deck. We didn't want it there, so we put a shoebox where the nest was. The next day there was another nest- one slot away from the old one. This kept continuing until all the slots were filled with wood and shoe boxes. The same thing happens to my neighbors, but they just let it go.

Yes it's normal. Birds like high out of the way places so they will be safe from predators. Enjoy the miricale of life and watch the eggs hatch and babies grow. I think your neighbohr had the right idea. Let the birds do their thing, it doesn't hurt anything.

Yeah, it's pretty cool to watch the eggs develop and hatch. I never saw birds go in flower pots to live before.
