The Glory of True Metal

My favorite type of music is heavy metal. After getting into metal you shall never go back to American Radio again. I love it bcause the lyrics aren't 100% about love and break ups and make ups like pop is. They deal with wonderful topics, like space travel, space battles, ghost stories, knights, kings and dragons, conquering, flight and so much more. :borg: My favorite are the conceptual albums where each song is a chapter. I'll be adding more to this post as I transfer over links to mp3s from the other board. I'm sure Plankton will want to add his imput since he knows so much more than I do. So if you want to know what I'm talking about join us in this thread. Rock on \m/ :headbanger:

Re: The Glory of True Metal

Power metal is my fav' form of metal too. Very good powerful and beautiful music created my musicians that know how to truely play their instruments. Also, many Power M' band's singers can really sing! Squidwardd was right about the lyrical subject matter. Very galactic, mid-evil, and glorious. There is such diversity, that there is bound to be a form of metal that best fits you. Here are some forms of true metal with a brief discription;

"Traditional Metal" (these are the earlier bands like Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Accept, Scorpions etc..)

"Thrash Metal" (This was the 1st form of metal I listened to. Fast and furious with gruff vocals and violent subject matter. Bands like; Overkill, early Metallica, Exodus, Forbidden etc..)

"Power Metal" (Fast melodic and glorious. Usually clear vocals and double bass drums thundering away. Sometimes symphonic, possitive, and uplifting. Bands like; Helloween, Gamma ray, Nightwish, Blind Guardian, Hammerfall, Kamelot, Stratovarius etc..)

"Doom Metal" (Much slower, depressive and gloomy. Great to listen to if you are down. Usually has operatic vocals and heavy guitars. Bands like; Candlemass, Memory Garden, Veni Domine, and Solitude Aeturnus.)

"Progressive metal" (Sort of like Power metal, but not usually as fast. It has more New Age-like soundscapes. More keyboards and even has some jazz elements. A very unique sound indeed. Bands like; Symphony X, Dream Theatre, Vanden Plas etc..)

"Neo-Classical Metal" (A very guitar oriented metal indeed. Many classical music passages are heard on the guitars. Stuff like Beethoven, Mosart and Bach are played on the guitar at break-neck speeds. Imagin Fur Elise put to clean sounding heavy metal and you got an idea. Bands like; Yngwie Malmsteen, Majestic, Impellitteri etc..)

"Death metal" (Very heavy metal where the vocals are growled and not sung. The music is like Thrash, but with more distortion on the guitars. The subject matter is right out of a horror movie. Gore, death and other subjects of the like. Very brutal indeed. Bands like; Obituary, Sepultura, Goreguts, and Immolation.)

"Black metal" (Kind of like death metal but the vocals are not a low growl. They are a higher pitch screech. The music has more elagance than death metal and the subect matter is usually very dark. That is why it is called Black metal. Sometimes more symphonic and majestic. Bands like; Agathodiamond, Lord Belial, Emperor, Immortal and Siebenburgen.)

"Melodic death" (a form of death metal where their is more melody and class. Sort of a cross between Black metal, Death metal and Power metal. Awesome stuff, imo. Bands like; In Flames, Children of Bodom, Dark Tranquillity, and Edge of Sanity.)

"Industrial metal" (Has a lot more groove and bass. Sounds electronic and has many sound samples from various movies. Vocals are often distorted and agressive. Bands like; Brainchild, Ministry etc..)

Here are many links to free, legal true metal;

http://www.hardradio.com/framemusic.html On this page, I recommend "Angel Dust", "Firewind", "Iron Savior", "Primal Fear", "Steel Prophet" and "Valley's Eve.

http://www.limb-music.de/limb.cgi This is a great page because this is a record label that distributes a lot of the bands I love! You can download complete songs in high quallity. On this page I recommend; "Gallowglass", "Luca Turilli", "Pagan's Mind", "Total Eclipse", "Zandelle", "ShadowKeep" and "Oratory".

http://www.noexit.net/html/bands.shtml Go nuts on this page. Almost all of these bands are great!
------------------------------------------------------------
The following links are for MP3.com so you can download them or just listen to them as Real Audio files.

http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/5/blind_guardian.html This page is just dedicated to Blind Guardian. A bombastic, melodic power metal band with many Mid-evil themes. One of the most famous metal bands in the world you never heard of.

http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/123/dragonheart.html Dragonforce. Great melodic Power metal.

http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/277/nightwish.html Nightwish. Symphonic power metal with female opera vocals. Again, another world famous band America has no clue about.

http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/336/power_quest.html Power Quest is a new band to the scene but are already making waves

http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/234/dreamtale.html Dreamtale. Simular to Stratovarius

http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/261/projecto1.html Projecto's fantastic song "Fight in the Sky"

http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/226/kenziner.html Kenziner is a Neo-Classical metal band and the song "Future Signs" is a must hear. The guitar solo in this song alons is worth buying the whole album! :eek

http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/289/arthemis.html Arthimis. Rippin Power metal with soaring vocals.

More to come...........:freak1

Super,

You don't have to install it or anything. All you have to do is put it in the rom and play the songs off it one by one. I compressed the tracks at 56k per second anyway so it should work.

EDIT: Eh, I didn't post this, Plankton did. He forgot to log me out just so you guys know.

In case anyone is interested, I made a web site about my metal cd collection. This is temporary because it is on Geocities:puke: The band width is crappy. Besides a few broken links and spacing problems, I am sure you metal heads out there would like to see it. As soon as Squidwardd and I get real webspace, I will make it a hundred times better. :headbanger:

I highly recommend the groups Tristania and Brainstorm.

Tristania is Norwegian goth metal - good songs are "Angina", "Heretique", and "World of Glass".

Brainstorm is power metal based out of the Netherlands (I think) - good songs are "Blind Suffering", "Hollow Hideaway", and "Tear Down the Walls".

Hey everybody, I know I don't get to post much anymore, but I wanted to update some links and give some true metal news.
As you can see in my sig, I finally got some decent webspace for my cd collection website (thanks Squidwardd  ) and it is updated. Please check it out.

There have been soooo many new releases in the world of True metal lately, that it would be impossible to list them all. It is great to see the world of metal thriving strong without the top 40 airplay or media attention. If anyone has questions about what I am talking about, please ask. There is more to life than what is on the radio or MTV

Lord Plankton/Squidwardd: I know this post got started back in January, but I am just now reading Lord Plankton's breakdown on the metal genre. That "essay" has got to be the most informative piece on metal I've ever seen. I had no idea there were so many different kinds...something for everyone!

Looking at the list, it looks like I'd enjoy Neo-Classical and Industrial Metals. I agree wholeheartedly...who DOESN'T get sick of the overrated and overplayed garbage they keep regurgitating on MTV and the radio stations? Ick. :repuke: Memo to the music industry: Rap sucks and we're sick of it because it all sounds the same!

At any rate, great job, Lord Plankton! Excellent article!
