Camracer's Dual-Drum Blackbird Mag 5000 Round Magazine
I started this mod of the Blackbird's motorized mag today. Got the new BB mags from Ray at DrozdMax a couple of days ago. It's time to show you all how to increase your reservoir capacity 5 1/2 times!! This is what now needs to be done to keep up to Sergey Pismensky's 2000 round per minute full-auto circuit board, people!! ....And it will give you the "Camracer" look to your Drozd!!

I've been waiting to show you all how easy this will be to do for SIX MONTHS!! Been WISHING for the availability of these aftermarket mags to be in our grasp!!!! They're now here! The theory and application of this is applicable to any style Airsoft mag you wanna try to fit on the Drozd!!

This is NOT a new prototype magazine, folks! I just wanna have some fun showing you all that a "shell is just a shell". Cut it up. Open it up. Re-shape it. Mold it. And MOD it!! .....And have some fun here!! :smash:

I wanna see something better than what I will show you, ...and it's EASY!!!

I'll post photo's in a little while. See Ya! ---Cam

Re: Camracer's Dual-Drum Blackbird Mag 5000 Round Magazine
Here's the scoop. Been working on getting this simple mag mod together for months. It's time people! Lets get you all with a "Dual-drum" mag!!

I estimate it will cost you to put one together about $160.00 to buy everything. If you just mod your existing BB mag, maybe $60.00.

Here's the game plan. First buy an Airsoft Dual-Drum mag. ...hope you can find one...

Next GUT it. Take All the mechanics out of it and toss them. You are ONLY using the shell as a reservoir to hold MORE bb's.

You can use ANY Airsoft mag that catches your eye. They'll all do the same thing. This is meant to be a REAL easy "dress-up" for your Drozd. ...and increase your capacity for bb's at least 5.5X!! This is the only way to go with Sergey's 2000 RPM circuit board! Now you'll be able to shoot for "MINUTES"!!!

So Here's the dual-drum:
Photo #1

And we'll mate it to the BB Mag:
Photo #2

First you need to mark out where you need to cut the DD(Dual-Drum) mag. Align the BB mag centered on the bottom of the DD mag and mark it:
Photo #3

camracer

Jan 14 2012
Re: Camracer's Dual-Drum Blackbird Mag 5000 Round Magazine
And the marked location to be cut:
Photo #4

After the cut-out. It doesn't have to be pretty because you will not see the cut out when you are done:
Photo #5

Because the BB mag is tapered narrower at the top and thicker at the bottom, you'll have to adjust for that. The idea is that you will be able to just slide the DD reservoir on and off the top of the BB mag's body. This will allow you to add multiple different types of Airsoft reservoirs to this mod!! ONE BB mag and LOTS of options to change the look!!! COOL!! ...and you'll still be able to very quickly disassemble your mag as you need to!

Next after you have the fit proper, I'll have you take some foil duct tape and wrap it around the body of the BB mag at the mating surfaces like so:
Photo #6

The tape is there to protect the BB mag and aid for removal of the body filler we will next use to create a molded perfect fit the attachment/detachment point for the DD reservoir. See next post.

Here's how it looks with the mags mated:
Photo #7

Rough up the interior surfaces as you see here to aid the auto body filler to stick:
Photo #8

You will need to coat the foil tape with "mold release" or something similar. This is what I use:
Photo #9

Make SURE the mold release agent is ONLY on the foil area on the BB mag. It's ok to get on the plastic body. It won't hurt it.

Jan 14 2012
Re: Camracer's Dual-Drum Blackbird Mag 5000 Round Magazine
Next apply auto body filler on this area (pink) both left and right sides. Slop it in there good. You will grind out the excess after it hardens, with a Dremel motor tool (or similar motor tool).
Photo #10

Once the filler is hardened (15 minutes or so), you simply pull/slide the reservoir DD mag right off the BB mag. A perfect "glove-tight" fit!! You'll be able to attach/detach the DD reservoir at will super easy!!! Neato!
Photo #11

Next you need to grind open a channel for the bb's to feed through. More to come tomorrow. Check back then! ---Camracer

The brand is Bondo that I am using. It's light gray in color until you mix hardener into it. Hardener is either blue or red. There are MANY brands of "polyester resin" out there. Some have fiberglass in them or even carbon fiber for added crack resistance. The one I used has neither, But I have some that does, also.

That green stuff you have SONY, I would guess is made by Bondo also, am I wrong??

My Dual drum mag is pretty much complete! I need to do the regular mag upgrades/mods to finish completely.

I am swapping out the stock motor for the Nichibo motor. I discovered something very interesting. Tbkahuna you'll find this most interesting (and others...!); Both of the new Blackbird mags I bought from Ray at DrozdMax have upgraded motors in them!! This is new for 2011 from Baikal. The new motors are still rated for 12v. The motor designation is "Autom" ARF-370CA-15370-V

Does that sound familiar TBK???! It's one of the motors we were originally researching for our first prototype mag project!!! Wow!! ...what comes around...! This is a MABUCHI motor!! It's sold by Autom where ever that is. Mabuchi's designation is RF-370CA-15370.

The original Baikal DPK motor had a no load nominal speed of 4000rpm with a current draw of .36A at 12v. Torque was about 110g/cm The new motor is MUCH more efficient at 5600rpm with a current draw .026A! Torque at 187g/cm!!

A nice upgrade from the original motor!!! ---Cam

Absolutely familiar. I have that motor right here! That was my first pick for a replacement motor. I got it because the Nichibo was out of stock when I first bought some motors for the electric mags. Too funny. I guess both were good picks, but I will still take the Nichibo now. I have since bought more Nichibos, but not more 370s.

My big question is if that motor in the new blackbird mag with the stock gear ratio will run at 2000 rpm. Or 1800? Or 1600?

....I wonder if Baikal reads this forum, Dude!! I think so...

I still take YOUR choice for the Nichibo. A great call brother!! That is still a better motor for what we now push with Sergey's 2000 rpm circuit board! But, for those of you reading this, that Mabuchi motor is a good upgrade. Good job Baikal!! Glad to see you guys over in Russia read this forum!! :smash:

....or they are just good at research like TBK and I and had "parallel" results! ...Glad to share the research, 'cause it's something we can steal later!!! Haaa HAAA!!

No, I don't think it will at 2000rpm, but my guess is that it will at least at 1600 rpm. I HAVE to try it out this weekend!!!!!! The Blackbird's new mag motor is rated at 12v max. But I'll push it to 21v because I DON'T CARE! I'll burn it out testing it 'cause I have the Nichibo to replace it with!!

And here's today's episode: "Carving Out the Feed".....

So now we need to "tunnel" out the feed from the DD mag into the BB mag. Open up a "port" inside like this. This is the surface that mates with the Blackbird's front side of it's reservoir (sorry it's blurry):
Photo #12

You need to cut a matching hole in the BB mag like this. I added some "Bondo"(white) and smoothed it to create a ramp down into the BB mag's hopper:
Photo #13

Another view:

Re: Camracer's Dual-Drum Blackbird Mag 5000 Round Magazine
Here's one half of that "ramp" on the BB mag. You need to do each half separately and fit the together so you can dis-assemble the mag later if you need to. You can see I routed the motor's electrical wires out of the way and "bondo'd" over them:
Photo #15

Tunnel out the inside on both sides left and right. Create a "funnel"
Photo #16

You need to next add some sheet plastic to help funnel the bb's to the inlet like this:

Re: Camracer's Dual-Drum Blackbird Mag 5000 Round Magazine

Alrighty then. Here's the AK-47 Drum:

To gettin' it installed, You have to cut it up. Check it out:

First you have to split the cover right down the middle:
Photo #28

You need to lay out were the cuts need to be made. The AK-47 mag is tilted at a 35 degree ...or so angle off plum. So, line it up with your BB mag (Blackbird mag) and get ready to make some cuts:
Photo #29

Now you can see where I cut out the top to fit the BB mag.

Re: Camracer's Dual-Drum Blackbird Mag 5000 Round Magazine
As you can see, I can still open up the feed door to fill it:
Photo #31

Here's a view from the side:
Photo #32

The idea is that you have to "carve" the cover to fit the BB mag. This takes some persistence. It's not a "quick" thing to do. You have to grind off a little bit of plastic, fit it, grind a bit, fit it again, grind a little bit more, fit it......and on and on until it fits perfect. I'm a model builder. I have patience to get something JUUUST RIIGHT! It takes time people. You can do a sloppy job and it will work fine still. I, on the other hand need it perfect.... So here's the fit:
Photo #33

camracer

Re: Camracer's Dual-Drum Blackbird Mag 5000 Round Magazine
And with the BB mag in place:
Photo #34

Since the cover has been vivisected, and there is no longer a center point to hold the "halves" of the cover down, we need to MAKE some "holds" to keep the cover in place. I used some styrene tube and sheet to create "pillars" to screw into to hold the cover on:
Photo #35

And here's the four that I made. Got it "buttressed" to add strength:
Photo #36

camracer
00:07:49 Tue
Jan 17 2012
Re: Camracer's Dual-Drum Blackbird Mag 5000 Round Magazine
Now I added the, ...I will say... a "funnel" to help "funnel" bb's to the cut-out I initially made for the Dual-Drum mag's feed on the front end of the BB mag:
Photo #37

I scored and folded the sheet styrene and braced it to stay put tight to the BB mag in this photo:
Photo #38

Above that "funnel" is the bb reserve. It's about the same area as the original Airsoft's volume. It looks like a lot of wasted space for capacity, but the bb's have to feed at the mid point of the BB mag. That "wasted" space used to contain the motor/gears/battery.

Man, Cam, Ive seen a lot of experimentation over the nie decade of trials and failures and nothing was even close to the brilliance you bring to the Drozd as well as others, that just awes me how simple you make it look compared to the very "laborious" progress in the past for a large cap magazine. I needed a valium sometimes to reed thru the agony of OPP and others to get a true LC mag that function well and reliably. Of course technology has changed, but NOT the creative imagination that went into yours and others advances with the Drozd to the BB. My applause to you and all!

Not sure I mentioned this, but the two Airsoft reservoirs are interchangeable on the BB mag's body. They just slide on and off without any screws or other fasteners, in a half second!! That was my point with this project, one BB mag with MANY options possible. You don't need to buy multiple BB mags.

Cam,how is the single .177 drum progressing? Are you waiting for a motor? GD.

I'm going to be working some more on it this week. ...I'll post.

I have it cycling bb's right to the mag head, then the spring won't push the weight anymore. Need a stronger winding mechanism. More to come, just gonna take time. ---Cam

Original combloc or Korean/Romanian. No diff in quality just collectability. I have the China. The Holy Grail of drum mags is the AK .223 100 round drum. Extremely rare and go for if EVER you come across one for 350-450.

The soviet and romanian lever loaders are a pain but VERY durable and wont explode and be shot if they are dropped. I have a Russian as well. Both work great, but the open chassis style ones rattle and can unfasten and dump the load. rare but happens.

Good link ST! Thats the one that got this car famous. KR20 honda enjine with 300 BHP. With the sub 1500lbs the power with the superchargerer gives it 600 hp and a 0-60 in 2.5 and you can drive it on the road. Ariel Atom! I will have one. Word is people have gotten sick riding shotgun! The handling is out of this world and No soo-500K or 1mill car can beat it in its class. U need to go to a fully moded Nacsar to compete with it.
