Remember telephone hookups and ticker tape teletypes?

First computer in HS back in 78 we had a PDP8. Size of a desk and took almost LP sized floppy discs. Star Trek ruled then-all with BASIC and Alphabet and type symbols.

My first computer was an IBM, no hard drive, had to load DOS before doing anything else. Monochrome monitor.

Processor was an 8086, then I built a 486DX2 66 mhz when Pentium 60 mhz came out. upgraded to 486DX4 100 mhz AMD processor. Then Dual Processor Slot 1 Pentium 3 100 mhz which I had until last year. Now have an AMD dual core Athlon 2.

I still have the DOS discs think it was 6.0 that I have, maybe older, and the 6.2 version. I also have, through the years, windows 3.1, 95, 98, XP home, XP Pro, and now Win 7.

First computer I ever used was a Tandy TRS 80 in school, then Apple II, then IIe. Those were the days.

sony, it's been around waaaay before u was born is my guess

I hate to admit this, but most of us can remember back before there was such a thing as the internet at all, or personal computers, for that matter. In fact, my first computer had the same os that all personal computers did in those days, it was called "the flashing cursor", and it's language was appropriately named: BASIC. Video games were machines you put quarters in at the arcade, in fact, my first home video game console, was the worlds first game console: PONG. So I hate to tell you this, but the most of us was around before u was born.
God, I feel really old, now.

I remember.

It wasnt called the flashing cursor, it was called VIC 20 OS they made 9000 pieces daily and sold over 1 million pieces worldwide.( commodore 64) made it's debut in 1980, I could be wrong but I think it was at CES.
Every other 8bit home computer was using basic OS (ZX Spectrum, Amiga, Commodore, Atari) and most of the time was running at 2.5mhz+)

I still have tapes somewhere with games

PC made it's debut in late 90's, mostly due it's price, individuals could finaly afford them.

First were 80286, 80386 SX or DX 80386 DX2 and DX4, there wasnt difference between AMD and Intel like we can see now. They were equal.
First bus was ISA, VLBUS,PCI and PCIx, now we are going to get PCI-x 2.0 (d

Got my ham license back in 1976. Put a Texas star 250 watt amp on a cb and the neighbors would wonder who was coming thru on the tv with all the audio interference. ... I still have a nice rig and a triband kenwood hand held but been quite a while since I have been on the air. Back in those days it was all we had... Talking in code on 21.1 MHz over to Germany was pretty cool back then and I like to listen in one the war in south America....
AWSOME! Then YOU of all people should appreciate what I mean about the shack and CB coax in 10' lengths! That's akin to triangular tires, you know?
I recently had a reinfatuation with radio, in a new form: wireless networking. I just love this 12.5cm band, it makes really, really, cute antennas. I once buit a yagi for 11m, that sucker was 32' across, it overhung the eaves of my house. I built a yagi for this ISM band, using a popsicle stick as the beam, the reflector element was 6cm wide! And I make waveguides out of large sauce cans (that work, since I know wtf I'm doing, and did the math and the measurements), and even built a kick ass parabolic, mounting a homemade biquad onto an abandoned satellite tv dish. And now, instead of a crappy postcard, a QSL = free internet!

I'm from Hawaii, originally, and did my HAM phase when I lived there. I used to use coconuts as QSL cards, didn't wrap them, or anything, just stuck on a bunch of stamps, and wrote the adress with a magic marker. Wouldn't you love to have one of those in your shack?

Re: Drozd Stock Parts

I personally have nothing really good to say about the shack, even though I still get lost in there, digging through their electronic parts goodies drawers, not the least of which is this: The HAM operators study guide, the black book bible of amature radio says that coax for the 11m band (27mhz, or CB) must be cut in 3ft increments, or a length in feet that is divisable by 3, up to 25ft, and in 25ft increments after that. But the Shack ONLY sells 10ft coax cables for their CB's. Good thing their CB's are GARBAGE, and don't really have enough power to burn themselves, no matter how f'd up high the SWR's are. That says it all, they don't have the slightest clue what they are doing or selling. The length of an antenna, including the coax connecting it (with the velocity factor of the coax compensated for), MUST be perportional to the length of the radio wave. Think of fretting a stringed insturment: length= resonant frequency. This is basic, fundimental radio, they should know better. "I asked about standing wave ratio, and they said they don't sell surfboards".

HA, the old cassette tape drives! 30 minutes of modem noise on each side of the tape. My first computer had one of those, it was a TI-994A, with a cartridge slot they never made any carts for. Yeah, I took courses at the college during the summer vacation, for 4 years. I did all the old forms of "basic"

100 PRINT "BITE ME"
200 GOTO 100

I have emulators for all the old classics, now, I can have flashbacks running them in windows for shits and giggles.

Parts are a real problem and it might just discourage people to the point of fading out this fine product. The nice thing about it is most parts can be made or bought from the local hardware store but the average folk isn't going to have the patients or know how to do so. I have a brother in law that wants one of these badly but I just cant recommend the drozd to him since I know for a fact that he wouldn't want to spend the time I have on mine to get things working again.
That spring broke on me about 90 days after I bought the new gun. Very frustrating when the people who I bought from told me to contact EAA. Of course EAA was no help at all.

Called in, PA representative took the order, $41 for express shipping  (just received parts from JimC) 500x heavier for $32.50 but I'm happy I'm getting it. Some items are just priceless. Meantime going to get the dipstick and torch, better be safe then sorry.

Thanks for the great ideas !!!!!!! I don't know what would I do without you

Call Gene at Pyramid, first, anyway, like I said, he has a parts pile, all kinds of goodies that aren't on the inventory. Ext 234 is his line. Don't bother with the receptionists, they just look at the inventory on the screen, they dont have a parts pile to dig through.
An ordinary lighter is never going to work, although one of those blue flame jet lighters should be enough. Every liquor store in the world sells those for under $5, and they are refillable. Get it red hot then quench it in a container of water, it has to cool fast to temper. I would do the dipstick metal that way too, after you shape it, if you can. The heating of the metal will relax the strain at the points where you bend it, too, so that it won't be brittle and want to break where it is bent. That is called annealing, when you get it red hot. cool it slow, it stays soft, cool it fast, it tempers hard.

Morning guys

windage, that would be great idea, the torch will be a problem, lighter should work but after 30-40 secs it's so hot you can't even hold it. Only option would be Zippo lighter.

DUBB if you are able to shape it, it will be much appreciated, put it in some small box and then letter envelope.

I will take even 2 pieces and will pay for it + shipping of course.

Last option would be (for US) order it from EAA and once again I will send money in advance. It all depends how busy you guys are.

Dipstick from a car should be fine will try it today and let you know after I get back from work.

tyvm, very much appreciated

Re: Drozd Stock Parts

Sweeper blade is about one mm thinner, flatways, but should work just fine. Want a piece? If you can bend it to shape yourself, it'll fit in any letter envelope, I can mail you an inch or two, makes the usps good for something for a change. Keep in mind that this stuff is a lot stronger, too. You'll never break it, and you'll have to work to bend it right. And you can quench it with a torch, if you care to, alternately, heating up red, and cooling it slowly, first, will soften the metal up a bit, and make it more pyable then quench it after you bend it, to harden it again, that's what I would do.
Again, these are just alternate solutions, in case you can't buy one: this is fixable, one way or another.

Dipstick would be good: steel. Hardening it by quenching is a great idea. I think what you mean by a "changeover" switch, is an spdt, like I said. An spdt normally closes one outside pin to the center one, or the other when the switch is "trown". The original is a "momentary", a spring loaded pushbutton, that has to be held down. Any type of 3 terminal switch, or spdt, will do, it can be one that stays "thrown", or engaged, like a toggle, or a slider (like the big switches for cyclic rate and fire mode are) if you had to. It wouldn't be facing the right way if you soldered it in the same place, but those sliders can go anywhere, and attach by wire to accomidate. It won't be pretty, but it will work. I'm just saying if you had to. There is more than one solution.
I find these neat, hardened steel things that are about what you need, in the gutters around here, from time to time, appearantly, these are street sweeper brushes that were ejected. Maybe I can make your piece, lemme see if I have one of those things, and compare it to mine, you still have the plastic part, and the pin, or something that can be a pin?

I was in the exact same predicament as you. I finally had to make my own spring. After some experimenting, I found a kind of sheet metal that I can harden with a propane blowtorch or even a lighter of some sort. I cut a strip similar in width as the factory part with my tin snips and formed it with needle nose pliers and then I hardened it with my torch. You have to heat it up so that it is red hot and then dunk it into some cold water.
It was been working ever since. Been around a year now. I can try to find out was metal I used or I might have some left that I can send you. Basically you are creating a leaf spring.
