Ok, so moving onto my first mistake.
I used too much crazy glue. The glue in effect, melted my buttons a bit, or expanded them at the base. I had left them on the cellophane plastic cutout template, I wanted a good seal so I put lots of glue, I think that's what caused expansion. They puddled out at the base, which I didn't notice, yet. I let it dry, then affixed it inside my reciever frame with more crazy glue to hold in place. This is when I found out the buttons has expanded or bulges out at the base, because they didn't sit flush inside the reciever anymore. I still had the cellophane template behind it, but it was sticking out a few mm from the sidewall. Now my SergeyBoard was already a crazy extremely tight fit before. When marking plotting out points, it didn't sit totally flush, it's hard to pop in and out. So I just aligned the front edge facing the button holes so those would be tight. Now because my buttons expanded do and my cellophane stuck out so much, I had even more increased difficulty trying to fit it past it, and into the slot. It clicks nicely when in the correct position, and i was getting no clicks. so i had to use a flathead screwdriver to put pressure on the board to push it into final resting place. remember, all holes done, button and button template inserted, this was the final time i was expecting to install the board. the stock one fit so tight, i had to pry it out. the pcb board was bending so much too, i was worried to snap it in half. so i didnt want to put extreme pressure on the whole board to force it in, i tried bit by bit, corner by corner. Anyhow, I ended up having to pull it out anyways to my frustration, and had to peel of the template and pull out the buttons. it was not working good, only the front button was clicking right, the other two felt pressurefit or not aligned so they didnt have free motion forward and back, with a hearty click. they kinds had a mush in feeling, and then stay stuck on the inside. so thats why i had to pull it all out again. To solve this problem, I had to totally remove the template as the buttons were wider now at the base, I gained a benefit. I could now feed the buttons from in behind, and they wouldnt fall out, as the base wider prevented them from doing so. Where before youd need the template to affix the buttons to, they were straight cylinders. Now things werent perfect from the get go, I had to sand the reciever holes, and sand the buttons shape so they would mate together nicely. I was a bit messy with the overuse of glue, so had a couple shiny spots on my button. An added bonus to the templateless buttons as well, because I got extra glue on a visible area on one button, I used fine wet sandpaper and went over the whole button. i did that with the other two buttons too. Now they dont look as plasticky, or hard plastic. The normal shiny look of smooth plastic buttons with a hard feel, after sanding, they are now black matte, with no shine at all, and almost look rubber! I personally like the smaller custom delrin buttons people have made, but without that material and tools, it was easiest for me to use what was included. So anyways, I got all the drilling and sanding and filing done for this mod at this point, its all about reassembly now. Which chronologically takes me to where I am currently at; because of the protruding buttons and template inside of the reciever, when i attempted to install the Sergey Board, i ended up using the screwdriver and pressed down on a part with a silver trace. BAD MOVE. I Feel like an idiot. I was so cloze to being done, and because of a lapse of judgement in the moment, trying to make things fit, as I had seen Constantin had successfully installed with the button and templates in, and I just thought, hey its a tight fit, but others completed their installs, so I must just stop being a baby and put some muscle into it. BIG MISTAKE. Now what should have been a happy friday for me, I am now a Debbie Downer and feel like poop that I could have made such a careless mistake. If i can save others, wrap your tools in tape or use something not sharp edged to press down with. I should have been more careful when doing this, my expanded buttons was a factor I didnt foresee or note from previous installs. Anyhow at any rate, perhaps I found a new way to use crazy glue to mod the button bases, so you dont need a template. However, I have already made it, so if it can be used as a resource for others, I can provide it, just like the template for the holes and the lcd screen. Cheers all, I guess the happy ending will have to wait until I get in touch with Sergey about what to do. Currently I am looking at conductive copper or silver pens used to repair solder or traces. Does anyone know if that would work? At least all the info for the mod I have described above/below... this forum setup is soooo backwards! So you should be able to get on your way modding, and avoid the mistakes I made which have stalled out my install, for now. I connected the batteries anyways. It seems like what I scratched is the middle of three silver trace lines, situated in between the magazine plug jack hole, and the far right button. The edge of the flathead screwdriver I can see now what happened, it was on the board pressing down on the silver trace line, I mustve put too much pressure, and I seem to have cut right through it - like you wouldndo, if you were trying to disconnect or break a circuit on purpose. A friend also mentioned maybe I can solder a wire to connect the two pieces together, but everything is so tiny, and I am already feeling clumsy and oafish. What should I do? Has this happened to you before? How did you fix it, or did you have to send it back to Sergey? A Very Sad Canadian Drozd. [ Too Many Emoticons In Post; Maximum 3 ] | ||||
