Yeah, they look like they may work if they have good roundness and if they are consistent in diameter. I would get the .170's instead of the .180's. Here is why:
I just tested both the Gamo lead Rounds and the Beaman Perfect Rounds and they shoot all over the place. I measured the diameter and roundness of both, and the Gamos are by far the better of the two (Gamos measured .177 consistently; Beamans .177-.179). They are also cheaper ($2.99/250 vs 7.99/500). I checked some of the bb's after firing them and noticed that the the .174 bore of the Drozd flatens the sides of both of these lead bb's, so by the time the lead bb's come out of the barrel they are cylindrical instead of round, and I believe this is the reason for the lack of accuracy. They are shooting at 635 to 645 fps out of my gun. At 600 fps, the 4.4mm Punt-Kugelns are much, much more accurate than either one of these. I had been reading a lot of bad stuff about the Gamos. What is happening is that people are confusing the "steel" Gamos with the "lead" Gamos and are ruining the rifling in their expensive airguns as the steel gamos are also grey colored, they are .177 diameter and not .172 (bb size) and Gamo sells both in almost identical blue round boxes. If anyone wants to try the lead Gamos there are two things you have to look for on the box: - The word "Round". If the box does not say "Round", they are steel. - Lead warning sticker. If bought in the US, they will have one on the cover. Don't buy the ones at K-Mart or Wal-Mart. They are steel. | ||||

Check my post on lead shot. The bb is .18 caliber or
25.4mm x .18=4.572mm There are still lead buckshot available with in b size(25.4mmx.17=4.318mm) with good spherical form and at .08mm smaller in diameter might work ok. At $16.00 for 8lbs.....i might give it a try. | ||||

Yeah, I guess I did. I bought six boxes on 3/24 and noticed that he took them off the website after that. I have called several times (he sends a business card with the orders. The phone# is 847-566-2365) to see if he is going to have any more soon, but I could not get anybody to answer the phone.
I also called EAA last Friday to ask them if they have any idea of what brand of lead balls can be used with the Drozd. They didn't really seem to know. They said to try the Gamo Lead Rounds, but I would be very skeptical about trying these as I have read very bad things about them in other forums. I ordered some anyways, along with some Beeman Perfect Rounds from Airgun Express. I will do some testing and post the results. | ||||

Well, this test has totally changed my perception about the Drozd, as it has gone from a powerful somewhat inaccurate gun to a very powerful very accurate hunting weapon.
For some time now I have been reading about the inaccuracy of lead balls vs lead pellets in different forums and websites, due to the rifling of the barrel affecting the flight; not being possible to make perfectly round lead balls; the ballistic coefficient of a spherical proyectile being lower than that of cylindrical proyectiles………blah, blah,blah, so I figured that lead balls would be impractical. It wasn’t until I read this article http://www.pyramydair.com/site/articles/pellets-vs-round-balls/ that I decided to test lead BB’s with the Drozd. The hardest part was to find lead BB’s as I also found out that BB is a caliber by itself (4.4mm) an it is different than .177 caliber (4.5mm). Lead ball’s are readily available in the US (Gamo Rounds, Beeman Perfect Rounds) but 4.4mm lead BB’s are not. They are only available in Europe. I searched and searched for a 4.4mm lead BB distributor in the US and found only one: http://jgairguns.tripod.com/airgunammo/id11.html. He had two types of 4.4mm lead bb’s so I ordered both. The package came yesterday, four days after I ordered them: RB4.4-1lb, bulk, $5.00/750 count. The BB’s came in a plastic bag which had ruptured and were all over the inside of the box. I took a look at a few of them and I new they wouldn’t work as most of them looked like a football. I took micrometer readings of the roundest BB I could find and it measured from .162 to 169 inches. I do not know what to do with these, I will probably melt them and cast them into .44 Keiths. RB4.4(250), German Precision, $5.00/250 count. They came in a red round tin box labeled PUNKT-KUGELN 4,4. My Drozd was purchased from Self-Defense Armory and they state very clearly to use NO LEAD BB's in the thing because of out of round probelms. Evidently the Russian BB's are the worst and often jam. The rifling causes problems with them too. Also, they are heavier and the chrony speed of them is like 200 feet per second less than the American steel BB's...like what the manual says...360 feet per second vs 500 fps with the steel.
SDA says they were shipped with 200 Russian lead BB's and to simply throw them away. What do I know? I've had no trouble with the Daisy zincs but I'm taking your word and switching to Crossman coppers. Thanks for the heads up. | ||||

Checked out the site, and they certainly are inexpensive, and sound like the diameter may work. I suspect that at this price they are not going to be real consistent in shape and may cause jamming. If they do work, they could be ideal for the Drozd.

The only ones that seem to be readily available are the Beeman “Perfect Rounds” or the Gamo “Roundballs”. According to Beeman, the ”Perfect Rounds” are supposed to be exactly .177 diameter. I have read that Gamos are even larger and not recommended for anything other than Gamo smoothbore airguns. By comparison the Crosman Copperhead steel BB’s are .172-.173 in diameter (Do not get Daisys. They always get stuck in the barrel of these guns. Pay the extra $1.00/6,000 for the Crosmans and save yourself a lot of trouble). I measured the bore in my Drozd and it is exactly .174 dia., so it seems that neither of these lead BB’s will go through the barrel….. Has anybody tried any of these or any other type of lead BB’s?.... The only other lead BB’s I could find are from this website http://jgairguns.tripod.com/airgunammo/id11.html . They are 4.4mm in diameter (.173”) and relatively inexpensive compared with all the others…... Has anyone had any experience with these?..... I want to shoot steel plates with this thing and do not want to use steel BB’s for this.
