Re: New .22 Subsonic

Been playing with the subsonics. In particular, I wanted to try the Aguila 60gn SSS. They are too heavy for the 1 in 11 twist of most .22LR barrels, like mine, and they tumble. They would work great in an AR-15 with the .22 adapter, though, particularly if you have the 1 in 7 twist barrel. It would probably be okay with the 1 in 9 twist, too. That's the drawback to increasing the bullet weight too much, with more weight, you need more twist to keep it stable. Keep that in mind if you use them.
That being said, even at subsonic velocities, these have a hell of a recoil as .22's go, it's substantially more than one would expect from a .22. Lots of fun!

I had several Japanese PS2's over the years, developer's consoles, mostly, and they have an English language option in their bios. Aside from the fact that they only want to play Japanese games, the big difference is that they reverse the functions of "X" and "O". When people would ask me why that is, I would tell them, "Well, 'X' is 'execute', right? Well it doesn't rhyme when you say it in Japanese, so I guess to them 'X' says cross it out, and a circle represents completion." "Oh", they would tell me. Then I would break it to them, "Actually, I haven't the slightest why, I just made that up since it sounds like it makes sense." But the funny thing is that usually, they would agree, that does sound like it makes sense, and probably is why. At any rate, it was good enough to satisfy their curiosity, always, fiction or not.

And just to be a gigantic penis, I would leave it in Japanese language mode, and not tell them that the buttons are reversed, once they can no longer read that on the screen. I wouldn't bother telling them that there is no way on god's green earth their games are

Actually, "CB cap" (and "BB cap") goes all the way back, that was the first .22 load, for gallery guns. It stands for conical bullet on a percussion cap, since there was no powder involved. Now days we don't have percussion caps, so they just dropped the "cap" from the name. But they are still the same thing.

CB cap wiki

Anyway, that's where that name "CB" comes from. Names get butchered through the years. So do meanings of all kinds of things. Have you ever heard the expression "quid pro quo"? It's an old latin phrase, that refers to an exchange of favors, like "you scratch my back, then I'll scratch yours". But in ancient Rome, it was actually a legaleze phrase, and they used it to mean "you scratch my back, and THEN I'll scratch yours", and that's not the same thing at all. It was more like an IOU, back then.

Have you seen the MK IV's? Check out the takedown. For all of you who don't know DUBBs' reference to .22 CB's the "CB" stands for City Bullet's.

Apparently gone are the days of buying bricks for $10. SMDH.

Re: New .22 Subsonic

I just came into a MkIII 22/45, so I am browsing for ammo, now, and I'm very surprised at how much this niche segment has grown in terms of available options. For one thing, any .22 ammo "for pistols" is always subsonic, and there are a great many more subsonic options labeled as such.

Check out what Sportsman's Guide has

It wasn't exactly what I was looking for, but I couldn't help but notice how many different subsonic options they have, and I'm impressed. It's come a long way from the days when I was a kid, and the big boxes of Winchester CB caps was pretty much it. At least those were dirt cheap, as they go.

I polished the hell out of the MkIII upper, and hot blued it again, since it had a little bit of rust on the edges, and discarded that POS magazine safety, that had to go. And now it's really nice, considering that it came to me as a shopping bag full of bits and pieces (only missing 2 little bits that were cheap, and it needed a mag) that were someone's Humpty Dumpty issue. The funny thing is I think I know what happened, the previous owner didn't have a mag, or know it needed one to work, so he couldn't decock it, and thought it was broken. So to get it apart, he just drove the pins out and let all the works just sort of fall inside the thing, so that it would come apart, since it has to be decocked to be disassembled.

I found a few places that sell barrel blanks, I'll see if I can find some and post some links. I was looking for some .355 barrel to try to extend and thread the barrel for a .380 so I could add a silencer on it. The funny thing is that I found one video of someone who had it done professionally, since that's somehow what the laws in Canada required for him to own one at all. Go figure.

I used a Crosman airgun barrel. Same outer diameter as the JimC and DrozdMax barrels. I just cut it to size and threaded it to screw into the pistol's frame.
Next I want to replace it with a Walther barrel. One truly designed for .22LR.

How did you make the barrel for that, anyway? Did you sleeve it, or drill and rifle it yourself?

Re: New .22 Subsonic

On the subject of .22's, I have been looking at a cool little pistol made by NAA called the companion. The one I like is the "cap and ball" version. Although sold as such, it's not actually designed for bp, it's designed for smokeless, they just don't say it. I heard the early promo ads said it did, but they must have got spooked about the atf on that, and don't call it that, now. But the thing is it has choked cylinders, that get smaller a little ways down to stop the bullet from seating all the way in. Well, for bp, you are supposed to pack it as tight as you can, or it can blow up in your face. The reverse is true for smokeless powder, it has to have some air space. Shake any cartridge and you will feel the powder moving around.
And the thing about it is, it holds a lot of powder for a .22, at least as much as a magnum.

The only problem I have with the action is that it is offset. The action is hands down the best in my opinion for .22 auto rimfire, but I personally believe if the main spring were lined up with the firing pin it would be optimal.

Who are we kidding? Milled Ti would make the best bolt, but cost trumps that.

I took a lesson from Glock that all parts don't have made out of steel.
That's the genius behind their success.

Someone should produce combo pistols that come with a regular, and a lightweight (high tech alloy of some kind?) slide and spring set in 9 and 10mm. This would make either a 9mm/.380 or 10mm/.40 combo in one. You never know when that might come in handy.

Right now I have it set up for standard/high velocity ammo, but all I need to do is swap in my milled bolt and lighter spring and then I can shoot silently and legally without a suppressor. I do have a rubber buffer in there, but it has nothing to do with cycling quiet ammo. It just quiets the bolt's action a bit.

I am thinking about getting another Ruger 10/22 and keeping that one set up permanently for quiet ammo. It is a real pain to remove my Archangel stock to get at the innards...

Re: New .22 Subsonic

I have used CCI Quiet .22 for rodent control for years it is my favorite. CCI also has a new segmented hollowpoint Quiet .22 ammo out. Love it. I will also use Remington CBee's as I can get them. They both give me about the same accuracy.

I have tried lots of different subsonic ammos. Actually any "standard velocity" .22 ammo is subsonic. Suppressed standard velocity sounds close to the CCI Quiet .22 and CBee's. It is really cool to hear the impact on a squirrel or chipmunk's body. It is louder than the actual round being fired! It sounds to me like cupping your hands and then clapping hard. Heh, that is certainly when you know you made a kill shot!

The milled bolt I made in the photos works flawlessly to cycle quiet .22 ammo in my Ruger 10/22. I annealed the bolt then milled it. I also did put a light bolt spring in as well.

Here is my Ruger:
