I need help
Hi,
I need help. A few days ago I posted that 2 of my members can't access the forum. One of your support team members told me that my code was wrong on the header and so I changed it.
This seemed to have helped out one of my users; LadyGodiva. She lives in Canada.
However, today she can't display the forum again.
One of you told me that I had to have her come in here and talk to you guys. But pretty much I am in charge of technical support on my website.
I don't know what's going on and I'm certainly not satisfied with the fact that some people may not be able to see the forum.
Help me please because I don't know what to do.

By the way, I have not changed anything on the board that would make it do something weird.

Re: I need help
I think it was probably me who advised you before, sanitke.

The problem these two users have is nothing to do with your board, which is absolutely fine. It is a problem at their end - with their browser or browser settings or perhaps a firewall setting. That's why it's better for them to come here in person, so that we can try and figure out the problem with them directly.

If you want to be a go between, that's fine, but you will have to relay information like their operating system, browser type and version and whether they are using a firewall, or anything else that might interfere with their ability to access or post on your board.

If they can't access the help forums, then you will have to relay the information to us, as described above. At the moment we don't know what the problem is - whether they can't see the board at all, or just can't log in or post. We need more information really before we can advise, and advice is all we can give really to users whose computer configurations are preventing normal use of the boards.

:sad:Im one of the users, LadyGodiva, I have been able to access the forum off and on. To start with there were no problems with my using it I used it daily for weeks. Then i couldn't and then it was fine and i could and now I cant use it again. Nothing on my computer has changed in the interm.
Please advise what information you need to help me out.

When you say you can't use it, do you mean you can't log in, or you can't access the board, or you can't post?

Try reading this thread and see if anything there is helpful for you.

If your use has been intermittent, then it's likely not a browser problem. Are you an AOL user perhaps? Sometimes, if a board has banned IP's, an AOL user can get caught by this.

At any rate, please clarify exactly what is happening for you, as that will help us identify the problem.

Please read this thread and see if that helps.

Try also accessing the board directly from the following link:

The login link on the website is separate from the login link for the board - possibly that's where you are going astray.

I tried the "following Link" and I got the same page saying the page cannot be displayed.
I read the thread and nothing there applies to what my problem is.

The page that comes up is"
The page cannot be displayed
...unavailable...The website might be unavailabel ot you may have to adjust your browser setting.
It then lists options to try. I have done them all, Refresh buttoncheck connection settings, check 128-bit security, checked the internet option for security settings: SSl 2.0, ssl 3.0 tls 1.0 pct 1.0 . Then it says

What browser version are you using of IE and what Operating system are you using? Sometimes ISP's do a DNS updating which makes some sites/domains unavailable for a period of time-like you said it stopped and then started working again? That sounds like a DNS update. How long has the one site been inaccessable to you Aileen?

No, I've never had that problem, and I am moving around boards on every server, every day.

You might want to get the people who complain about this to give a screenshot, a traceroute (tracert denim.bbboy.net in an ms-dos prompt), and anything else they can think of to us.

I echo this myself since I do roam the boards freely between servers and never encounter this. If they are using a older Netscape-people do have trouble accessing boards if they have a very outdated browser such as 4.5 in NS or lower then 5.0 in IE. Get them to do what BbBoy advises above and answer some of the questions about browsers, versions and so we can try to figure out why there is a problem on the way they reach BbBoards because this is not a problem on our end that we can fix. It takes them answering questions and working with us directly or through you to get the obstruction in between them and us cleared so they are able to roam your board and others with no trouble.

Complaints:

for some reason i can not get in the forums. i use to but now i can't, can someone help me please. thanks Renit

ANSWER TO HIS MESSAGE:
Dear Renit,
What happens when you try to log on? Does it display the forum page or not?
Does it bring a CANNOT FIND PAGE error or are you just not able to log on with your username and password?
TY

MESSAGE #2 FROM USER:
When I try to log in to the forum it keeps going to can't find server.
so i did what it said and try to reconfigure my internet settings and still no forums. Is it me or i'm doing something wrong

So, does that help you guys enough??? this adds to 3 users that are having trouble.

As mentioned earlier, it's nothing at our end, sanitke. Some users are having trouble at their end. We try and make suggestions to help them, but at the end of the day, that's all we can do.

Upgrading to the latest browser versions usually fixes most problems. Users need to have cookies and javascript enabled and the normal browser defaults are fine.

Please relay this to the users still having trouble and in addition, ask them to make sure they aren't using "popup killers" or have unduly restrictive firewall settings.

Traceroute?? ehhh what ??? can you explain to us what does that mean, how do we do it and we will gladly try.

About the screenshot I can almost bet that its exactly the same screen that you get when you're trying to navigate without a connection to the web.

Thats what all the people having a problem are getting instead of the forum.

Re: User
I want to let you know that what we need is a ping-have those users ping our servers. That with a screenshot. In other words, press Print Screen and then go to Microsoft Paint and paste in there and save as a gif to upload as a attachment here to give us what we've patiently been waiting for.

Is it that you don't know what or how to perform a 'ping' test or misunderstanding of what we want to see that for? It would show the way your 3 users individually make their way through the intenet to find BbBoard. If there are what are known as Time Outs meaning it is trying to find the next hop on the way here, but can't...It will shed light on what is going on as they try to access BbBoard. If you don't get them to supply us a screen shot of those kind of results, there is nothing we can do.

It is not us holding you up, this has gone on for days and looking back I can see your growing frustration, but unless you start focusing on getting us the info we've asked for. there is nothing we can do for you. Please try to respect that we will do our part to help people, but if you are impolite and implying we aren't doing our best, I think it's safe to say you won't be doing yourself any good and getting worked up instead of helping to work it out.

Truth speaks for itself and today you posted about this again as if starting a new topic was helpful when it is anything but-this is the thread for your 3 user's troubles. Posting like that will get all of us nowhere. So please, if it is that you need more info on how to get what we need as in a Ping in MSDOS and a tracert (trace route) to show what is happening on their way here to Bbservers, just ask now, because we'll understand that and try our best to help you help them.

Now come back with screenshots of complete traceroutes / pings to bb.bbboy.net and we will THEN be able to interpret those findings and shed light on what is happening. If this was a large issue we would have a lot more then three users here and two over there, having similiar trouble. If you need more help them please ask...

That is useful information, but not what we are looking for-we want them to test their pathway here and run a trace route to see if and where it is timing out. We want to help you sanikte, but please don't get upset when it seems to me that you haven't really read our posts here and above. Take the time to get this resolved and forget about it.

It will be resolved if you can produce something for us to look at and see about their connection to our servers. We could have already put this to bed if you had asked them to do a ping and tracert. I posted asking for this information yesterday sanike, so help us move forward in helping your members. Looking just now I see that one of your members who posted here did get on your board this morning. :

Hi,
Thank you for answering and taking the time to do so with such a large explanation of what you want.
We have been trying to answer all questions that have been asked to us by the other person trying to help us out. But never until recently did we get the request to ping your site. I totally agree that this is the information that you guys need and I'm sorry about my frustration but so far the only reasonable questions I had been asked were wether if they were having trouble with the log in or what type of browser they were using or if they were behind a firewall. I has driven me insane that after answering, no, its not the IE, no, its not the firewall, and for God's sakes it's not a login problem, we just can't even get this people to display the forum I can't seem to explain myself or my fellows here.
I apologize for starting another thread, I just lost the first one I started in the middle of this frustration. It was not intended to flood your support forum.

Now, if you could please explain to me which command to use to ping the website I will more than gladly will explain step by step to my users on how to get the information you requested back to you.

Thanks

Re: User
Oh, and very important, this is something else that happens which I've noticed.
Yes, you can see LadyGodiva last logged on the forum today or recently BUT the weird thing is that she doesn't see the forum even though the forum does seem to see her.
Take for example Sherrie, look at the time and day she was last seen, Monday November the 4th I believe, Sherrie has not been able to see the Forum since around the time when she signed up for the board. Then it let her see it for 2 days or so, and ever since then its been irregular.
THis is why I find it so odd.

Re: User
Are the users in question trying to access the board directly or from your website? If the latter, get them to try accessing the board directly.

Possibly they need to do some "housekeeping", i.e. delete their temp files, delete temporary internet files, defrag their computers. etc.

Any one of a number of factors could influence this.

I think we've covered all possible avenues here - if users have tried all of these, then there really is nothing else we can suggest. We cannot analyse all their browser, OS and firewall settings.

As suggested by BbBoy earlier in this thread, get them to do a traceroute by opening a DOS window and typing tracert denim.bbboy.net at the command prompt. That will "ping" our server and they can see where the holdup might be.

Re: User
Actually on my computer at least, you can't do a screen dump of a DOS window, so maybe this won't help you. However it will tell you how many "hops" between your computer and our server and if it stops somewhere before it reaches the final one, that will tell you where the holdup is. If any of your users have "Neotrace", this will get them the full information though - they just need to type in the url which is denim.bbboy.net.

Re: User
Oh and the IP# of denim.bbboy.net is 209.151.94.19 and there could be anything from 10 to 20 nodes between your computer and that server, depending (a) on where you are and (b) the route currently being taken (these change all the time).

We didn't mention the traceroute earlier, because (a) the other suggestions mentioned in this thread are usually sufficient and (b) this is not the easiest thing to do (or to explain), with it being a DOS command.

The symptoms you mention for Sherrie and LadyGodiva suggest to me that this could be an issue with their ISP's, as mentioned (I think) by BbAdmin (Pamster) earlier in this thread. I'll find it and repost it here.

I've also heard that sometimes ISP's unilaterally block sites that they consider *might* be undesirable in some way. You might suggest to the users in question that they they quiz their ISP's on this point.

I have posted a support page in the site that will help them ping your site and send the information to me so that I can send it to you.
As soon as I have an answer I will attach it to the thread.
As far as the forum being banned by an ISP I don't know. If this happened with them, what can I do to help them out? Do they call their ISP and talk to them or change ISP? which I doubt that will happen.
Why would they ban you guys from their service? I find that quite weird.

As I explained above, they will most likely not be able to make a screen shot to send to anyone, However what they can do is press the PrtScrn button on their keyboard and then paste the result into Notepad - this will give the traceroute readout for the latter part of the trace (it's unlikely they will be able to capture the whole trace). Then they can paste that into a post or an email and you can then post it here. It will look something like this:

I didn't say anything about "banning you guys from their service" - if an ISP did block our network, it would most likely be by accident. All that's required is for the user in question to enquire whether that has happened and if so, ask them to unblock the network. No, of course they don't need to change ISP's - what a strange notion.

Re: This info is for REnit
Ok great, thank you for posting this. We'll take a look at it. I'm going to see what BbBoy and BbAdminMod think of this...I can't see any time outs, but I see unknown host coming up. Hang in there sanikte, we haven't forgotten about this and if you get anymore info from the other two users we will gladly look at it too and see if something can help us find the trouble.

Re: This info is for REnit
Ok, thanks for taking the time. I'm still waiting for the other people to send the info. I spoke to both of them today and something funny has happened, one is actually able to see half the forum, but if she clicks on anything like reply or read a thread she gets a can't display page.
Then the other one was able to see the forum for a bit but now she cant... weird isnt it?
Anyway, Im still going to send you the info as soon as I have it. It might be until the weekend that I have all of them to post.

Re: This info is for REnit
I'm not sure that the Neotrace result helps us much, as the nodes vary from day to day, the times vary from minute to minute and all it tells us is that this user was able to access the server (and his board) on that occasion. Timeouts or "No Responses" are common and don't really mean anything either. We know he can access his board - what we don't know is why under some circumstances he can't do so. I don't expect the other traceroutes to be substantially different from this one.

Have you acted on the two suggestions made earlier, i.e. that the users:

(a) check with their ISP's that the network hasn't been and isn't being blocked

(b) access the board directly and NOT via your website ?

There could be a conflict for some users between the website login procedure and the board login procedure and/or their respective cookies (does your website set a cookie?) and I don't think that we have really examined this aspect of the problem. The per capita percentage of your members with problems is way above the average and so perhaps it would be a good idea if they were to try the following:
  1. Delete both your website and your board cookies
  2. Access the board directly without going to your website first
  3. Log in at the board using the normal (not the cookieless) login
Have your members try this and let us know what happens.

Re: This info is for REnit
Hello,
This procedure worked for the latest one of the users that couldn't get on. Thanks for that!
I'm still waiting for the other two to attempt the steps and see if it works for them too.
Just wanted to keep you updated.
