Membership screening
I've recently had a rash of spammers on my board and had decided to make it so a new member would need to be approved before allowed to become a board member. The trouble is that when I do, non members can not view the main page. Is there a setting that I am missing? I want the screening but need to have the crawlers and viewers. I know several people that view my board and are return visitors as well as non members doing a search find my board.

Thanks
Linda

Re: Membership screening
No you're not missing anything, we don't have a setting to allow non-members to view the board when the Membership Screening is enabled. We've always told people to use the forum by forum (Meaning in each forum's settings) posting restrictions. You go into the forum settings and have it be viewable by Non-Members but they are not able to post because of the restrictions settings where you make it either where the non members or members of the board or Users, (meaning registered BbBoard members CAN start threads, polls and other things. Hope this helps Linda.

Re: Membership screening
Thinking on that, it doesn't prevent spammers from registering, correct? So if I se it so only board members are allowed to post in each forum, how does that prevent the spammers from registering on my board in the first place and then of course being able to post where they want?

Re: Membership screening
No we don't have anything to prevent spammers from registering...Other then the little image thingie you ahve to enter numbers from so it's not possible for spam bots to do it. But other then that we don't have anything in place. If the Posting restriction is set to "Users, Mods & Admins" then yes, a registered name can post in any forum not set to "Members of the board, Mods & admins".

Re: Membership screening
Ok, I am sorry but now I am a bit confused. What is the difference between "Users, Mods & Admins" and "Members of the board, Mods & admins"? Aren't users members of the board? Or are 'members of the board' just members to each forum?

I'm really sorry for all the questions, but I need to understand.

Re: Membership screening
If you put the viewing restrictions as to "Members of the board, mods and admins" then Non-board members will not be able to read or post in the given forum the setting is set for, no spidering is done on these semi-closed forums.

If you set the viewing restriction to User's Mod's and Admins' anyone logged into BbBoard with an existing account is in effect a non-member, but the moment they post in a forum marked with "User's Mods & Admins," they can see and post in the ones marked as above with "Members of the board Mods & admins." Because the action of posting in a "User's Mods & Admins" forum they are a member of your board now. You can have forums open for "Guest Viewing" but only offer posting restrictions to at least "Users Mods & admins" so the spammers without accounts can't post. But Google and others can spider pages for indexing on search string results.

I hope that helped. No questions here are ever not worth asking so please feel free to post if you have other questions.
