Good God Google!
This morning, I went to my board and found one guest: googlebot.

A few hours later, I returned. Two more guests. All googlebots.

I just went back again, and now there are NINE!

 Is this normal???

I've never even submitted the board to a search engine, unless I accidentally hit the button in the Admin screens (which I highly doubt).

This gets posted about a lot here at this time of every month. It's perfectly normal, you can have loads of googlebots. Even if you didn't submit - they follow links too, from other places. http://google.com/bot.html .

OK! Thanks!

I was afraid that someone was pulling a prank on me! (You'd be surprised what some people do. Or maybe not!)

Re: Good God Google!
Well, if it's a large number (look at this board for instance) and you think it's unlikely to be your members all online at one time, then it could be the google bots.

Otherwise, probably not - unless maybe you catch em in the act! not even sure about that though...

They don't add you straight away after spidering, it can take a month or two.

Hmm, I think at one point the board I administrate at had 17 on, but all you have to do is click the IP and it should tell you its a googlebot.

But 92? Thats not healthy.

Phantom..do you have a site meter on your website? If not you should get one. You can click on referred by and it will show if it came from a google listing ..and what they were searching for.

Re: Good God Google!
I just got the free one at Site Meter ..when you log into it from your page it will have a list of recent visitors, or you can click on referred by,or details ..it'll give you all kinds of traffic that's been on your board. I just got the little cube icon, but they have all kinds of styles to choose from.

It's a good little add on.

Re: Good God Google!
I have a quick dumb question about the google bots....they've found our board and are doing their thing. What I'm curious about though is if anyone knows whether they can spider forums that are private or hidden? We have one of each and I'd just as soon those not get "googlized", LOL.

I don't believe they can get into the private or hidden forums.

Re: Good God Google!
Look at it this way--if you have the Who's online activated, it tells other ppl how many guests you have at any given time--and the google bot makes it look like your site is really interesting, so it might encourage others to stay and read and maybe become members.

Re: Good God Google!
most people put site meters at the very bottom of their site, so just add it to your "footer" section of your template

Re: Good God Google!
I've had a member become uncomfortable about info in a post she made turning up when one of her friends searched for her nickname(which googlebots got from her profile)--it's a good post, not embarrassing, but she mentioned not wanting her son to see it. I want to insert META tags to send the googlebots scurrying--where exactly in the HTML does it need to go--near the top I presume?

Hi SouthernBelle,

There is a code you stick in the Header but I don't know it offhand. BbAdminMod or BbBoy might know it and be able to post it here for you. All profiles on most message board providers are public and will come up in search results so that is something to keep in ind if you don't want your email listed.

Re: Good God Google!
Google doesn't read meta tags as far as I know and meta tags have to be in the head section to do the job properly anyway. I think if people post on a public message board, they just have to be aware that their posts can be found by anyone determined to find them. Posts in a private forum on the other hand can't be read by anyone without specific assigned access to that forum.

Hmm...the meta tag thing was something I found on the info page BbBoy referenced earlier in this thread--thought it might be worth a try. I'll give it a shot, and let y'all know if it works!

Re: Good God Google!
Yes, I know, but meta tags have to be inside the HEAD element itself - admins don't have access to that area (except for specifying description and keywords, which we recently added).

Re: Good God Google!
Hi all,
Just out of curiousity, would the google spider contibute to the bandwidth used on an account? I didn't see this mentioned before, but in light of a previous post mentioning that google played on the forum most of the day, I was wondering if I should send a bill to google... laff.

Also would it help to delete older posts, to keep the google bot at a dull roar..?

You guys are THE best, keep up the good work, and thank you for the new options and the wicked T-shirts!!!

cheers
mike

Interesting point, cdra. Actually I don't think it does, though I could be wrong. I wouldn't worry about it anyway, since there's nothing you can do about it!
