member not able to sign in ( 19:07:40 WedSep 4 2002 )

I have MBA on our board. And for awhile now Ive got emails from frustrated members saying they click the link to enter the board (they are already approved members). It tells them they have to be approved(again!) and when they hit approve it tells them to re-register. What gives? Im about to lose members over this.

That means that they're not logged in. They'll need to log in before being able to view your board.

Sorry I didnt make myself clearer, they are logged in. And can get to other Bbboards. Sometimes after it tells them they have to be approved, again it tells to re-register once they hit the apporval button and other times they get a blank black screen. Ive had various members, about half at this point, have the same problem.

Patience!

If it tells them to register, then they are not logged in. They will still be able to access other boards if they're not logged in. As some boards allow people who aren't logged in to view and even post. Make sure they're not using cookieless login, as they'll probably delete the string when going back to the board. If they're logging in from your "Member Screening" page, then they'll have to type the URL to your board into the address bar after logging in, or it'll just refresh the Member Screening page.

Ok, why are approved members who have posted etc. before having to get approved? Doesnt make sense. They are logged in but it says they are not approved. And here I am approving even some of Mods. At the point they request approval they HAVE to be logged in or it wont kick them to that page. So they are logged in. Heres an email I got from the user twinmomma on whats happening to her:
"What keeps happening is the page where it says I need to log-in and request approval comes up and I don't know why. I have your site bookmarked and that's how I get there. I've tried typing in the name of your board where it says find boards and it brings me back to the log-in request approval, even if I am already logged in. I never log out because of these problems. I log-in without checking the cookieless log-in and i've also logged in trying the cookieless log-in but still it won't work, it just keeps taking me back to that page. Or it will also take me to that black page where it says search boards, register, etc and I try from there also and nothing. The thing is, is when Iog in it says i'm logged in, but it just won't let me to your board"

Ok so what now?

They don't necessarily have to be logged in to request approval actually.

The person you quoted there might be having problems related to her browser or firewall settings. Do you have any other members with similar difficulties? Retyping the url (as BbBoy mentioned in his post above) might be necessary, if they log in at your board. Did you explain that to them?

I'll do some testing later today to see if I can replicate these problems.

Any help is appericated  Im not a computer genius by any stretch,LOL
Im lost on the part you dont have to be logged in to request approval. How can one who isnt logged in be recognized as being registered in order for them to request approval? Do you just click the approval button even if your not logged in and it recognizes your info, even though your not logged in? And processes your request? If thats the case, then couldnt people who arent in registered apply too?? Im so confused LOL In my small computer mind I would think the board itself would recognize that is a valid members name, logged in or not. If I were to type in MicheleisMe as my username and I wasnt logged in, would it not say something to the effect that I or that name is already a member of that board and ask me to sign in?? I need a map cause Im really lost now.
If its a problem with their server or firewall, any suggestion to them how to clear it up?
Like I said , this is happening to several people. I beg them NOT to log out now,LOL The person in question never did log out and have the link stored in her fave places. Sometimes it lets her go in , other times it doesnt. Just seems weird that sometimes she is logged in and sometimes she is not.
Thanks again for your help!
God Bless,
~Michele~

Sorry, I didn't make it very clear - what I meant was that you don't have to be logged in to be able to view the application page. You do have to be logged in to actually request approval.

Let's go through this again:
  • If they are a member of your board and are logged in, they will access your board without any problem.
  • If they are a member of your board, but are not logged in, they will come up against the MBA application page.
  • If they are NOT a member of your board and are not logged in, they will also come up against the MBA application page and will need to log in before they can apply to join your board.
It's definitely best for your members to be logged in before they attempt to access your board. If they are not logged in for any reason, they should log in at a non-MBA board, such as this one.

Many admins either link to this thread, or reproduce parts of it on their boards to help members who might have trouble logging in or staying logged in. This is a good idea.

A browser or firewall setting can sometimes interfere with cookies - so your members just need to check that cookies are working. There's a link in the thread I gave a link to above, to a website that checks cookies.

Thank you for the link and making it clearer.
That brings me back to my orginal question......why am I approving people who have not only been approved already but have posting on my board and at some points are even Mods?? You clearly said they have to logged in to ask for approval but do not have to be logged in to see the MBA page. So if Im getting approval requests they are logged in but not being recognized. This problem is due to maybe the firewall or browser problems you mentioned?

~Michele~

When we had the server glitch a while back, there were quite a few problems resulting from a partial loss of data. My guess is that some of your members got caught up in this.

Hopefully this won't happen again and in addition, when the enhancements to the MBA feature are released (soon I'm hoping), MBA applications and logging in to MBA boards will work more smoothly than at present.

If they lost membership during the server glitch, there's nothing that can be done except re-approve people, as you're doing at present.

Ok now I had a person posting yesterday. She came back today and it made her request approval again. She had the same problem before the glitch and afterwards. She's not the only one either.
Are we still losing information? Or is my board possessed with info eating demons? LOL

Your board is neither losing infornation, nor possessed of demons (at least not of our making)!

She's either not logged in when accessing your board OR she's using the cookieless login.

Ok but once she logs in why doesnt it recognize her as a member? Because it wouldnt let her in without getting approved again. And like we discussed before, she HAS to be logged in if she is requesting approval. I had to approve her again for her to get access to the board. I could understand if she isnt logged in why she isnt SEEING the board. It isnt a question of viewing... Im just wondering why an approved member who is logged in isnt being recognized as an approved member?
And BTW I was ON the board tonight, click to another forum and suddenly Im logged out. I had no problems logging back in. But I was nowhere near the log out button.......plus there was post today from various members that were blank. I checked to see if I accidently click them on ingore and my ingore list is empty. Is there a Priest in the house? LOL I think there is a demon screwing with my board.
I sure do appericate all of your help!

Are you (and she) quite sure that this member was logged in before trying to access your board?

As I explained above, if a member isn't logged in to begin with, they have to log in at a non MBA board, such as the support board, first. If they try to log in at your board, it will never work. At least, not until we add the planned enhancements that I mentioned.

Another point: if she was logged in, did she use the normal login or the "cookieless" login? The latter would cause problems.

I don't know why you got yourself logged out - you know that your name (next to the Welcome at the top of the board) is a log out link, don't you? I've sometimes accidentally clicked this - could that have happened to you?

Please post a link to a thread or threads where there are posts by members that are blank and we'll take a look. Maybe they are intentionally or accidentally blank! It does happen.

The posts seem to have either shown up or the posters have re-edited them. Only happened twice.
I know that I will log out if I click my name. I wasnt even near that area. Thats what confused me. No worries since I was able to log back in.

OK maybe Im not making the problem clear enough. Its isnt the issue of logging in. Since she had and did request approval (again) she HAS logged in. We discussed that above. They aren't going to be do anything but SEE the MBA page without being logged in. If I get a request from them, they are logged in. So thats not at issue here. At issue is why my membership info is not being kept. It has to be losing it or something for the member to be able to request that they be approved again.

God Bless,
~Michele~
