We seem to be going round in circles here!

I asked you two questions in my last post - please could you answer them?

Please also post the name(s) of users whom you have approved, but whose approval doesn't appear to be "sticking". In addition, I'll apply for membership of your board myself and test it out (you can delete me afterwards).

The last member whose info wasnt sticking is named, frugalchick.....But like I said its happened alot in the past to others. Even me at one point,LOL
I thought I answered your questions. I just didnt provide the link to the those posts because quite frankly thats not what Im worried about, since one was re-posted and the other might have been a user error. Thats why I said, no big deal.
Heres my question......you spoke of logging in properly, such as if I am quite sure if she was logged in and the cookieless log in. Yes Im sure she was logged in cause it allowed her to request approval again. Not just view the MBA page. Cookieless log in would not effect if my board recognizes her as a member, would it? I would think that would only effect HER trying to logging in. But since she got to request for approval then she was logged in. Unless your saying that each member who does cookieless log in wont be recognized on my board, right?
God Bless,
~Michele~

OK, I just received the email confirming my acceptance. I went to your board and got in immediately - I was of course logged in beforehand. I then left and came back again with no problem, so there's no bug with this.

The questions I wanted answers to are these:

Quote:

Are you (and she) quite sure that this member was logged in before trying to access your board?

Another point: if she was logged in, did she use the normal login or the "cookieless" login? The latter would cause problems.

The "cookieless" login is an important issue because, unlike a "normal" login, no cookie is set on the user's computer, so the system can't "recognise" that user on her next visit. From what you tell me, this seems the most likely explanation for what is happening to frugalchick and perhaps other members.

Actually I'll test out this hypothesis and let you know what I find. I'll log out, log in again with the "cookieless" login and see if I can access your board.

Bingo! The "cookieless" login is definitely the culprit!

As soon as I tried to access your board, I got the MBA page. You'll need to tell your members about this, so that nobody gets caught by this again.

So if a member clicks cookieless log in MY board wont recognize them as a member? It effects the memory of MY board with THEIR settings?
There might not be a bug but we are certainly losing member information. Its doesnt happen to everyone. So you seeing if worked is really neither here nor there. Since it doesnt happen to everyone all the time. But its happened aleast once to over half of my members. Im sure BbBoy can view my log and see where Im approving members who have already been approved and posted.
Im still lost. They HAVE to be logges in to request approval. They request it and I have to approve it. So why are we still discussing being logged in?

So your personal setting effect if the board remembers you? I would have never thought that.

A cookie is set on a person's computer when they log in - it's really just a text file with their information on it and it "remembers" them next time they visit a board (any board).

Now the cookieless login is quite different - it actually only works on the board that you log in on (I didn't realise this until just now). As soon as you go to another board, you're no longer logged in!

This is what happened to me: I logged out, logged in with the cookieless login on my own board, then tried to access your board. I came up against the MBA page.

I then posted the above message - you'll note that I wasn't logged in at the time (only I didn't realise it then).

So, in summary, the "cookieless" login cannot be used by anyone who is a member of an MBA board - it simply won't work. Members must use the "normal" login and they must login before accessing the MBA board.

It's nothing to do with the"memory" of your board and your board is NOT losing information. It's taken a while, but we've now established beyond any doubt, that for the reasons given in my last post, the "cookieless" login won't work for members on MBA boards.

Actually I almost wish we'd never introduced the darned thing - it's actually only intended for members who for reasons connected with their own computer set up, can't log in using the normal login procedure. For example, people using networked computers at their workplace, or who have very restrictive firewall settings.

I will threaten certain death to those who try to do a cookieless log in.
Thank you for your all work in discovering the problem. It's such a relief to know the source and how to avoid it. Maybe I wont be bald afterall.
