Oh yeah and also about

Quote: No, I've never had that problem, and I am moving around boards on every server, every day. You might want to get the people who complain about this to give a screenshot, a traceroute (tracert denim.bbboy.net in an ms-dos prompt), and anything else they can think of to us.

Traceroute?? ehhh what ??? can you explain to us what does that mean, how do we do it and we will gladly try.

About the screenshot I can almost bet that its exactly the same screen that you get when you're trying to navigate without a connection to the web.
Remember that Internet explorer window?
Thats what all the people having a problem are getting instead of the forum.
Do you still need a screenshot?

Re: User ( 05:48:28 TueNov 12 2002 )

I want to let you know that what we need is a ping-have those users ping our servers. That with a screenshot. In other words, press Print Screen and then go to Microsoft Paint and paste in there and save as a gif to upload as a attachment here to give us what we've patiently been waiting for.

Is it that you don't know what or how to perform a 'ping' test or misunderstanding of what we want to see that for? It would show the way your 3 users individually make their way through the intenet to find BbBoard. If there are what are known as Time Outs meaning it is trying to find the next hop on the way here, but can't...It will shed light on what is going on as they try to access BbBoard. If you don't get them to supply us a screen shot of those kind of results, there is nothing we can do.

It is not us holding you up, this has gone on for days and looking back I can see your growing frustration, but unless you start focusing on getting us the info we've asked for. there is nothing we can do for you. Please try to respect that we will do our part to help people, but if you are impolite and implying we aren't doing our best, I think it's safe to say you won't be doing yourself any good and getting worked up instead of helping to work it out.

Truth speaks for itself and today you posted about this again as if starting a new topic was helpful when it is anything but-this is the thread for your 3 user's troubles. Posting like that will get all of us nowhere. So please, if it is that you need more info on how to get what we need as in a Ping in MSDOS and a tracert (trace route) to show what is happening on their way here to Bbservers, just ask now, because we'll understand that and try our best to help you help them.

Now come back with screenshots of complete traceroutes / pings to bb.bbboy.net and we will THEN be able to interpret those findings and shed light on what is happening. If this was a large issue we would have a lot more then three users here and two over there, having similiar trouble. If you need more help them please ask...

Remote User: Renit
HTTP User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98; H010818; Hotbar 4.0)

That is useful information, but not what we are looking for-we want them to test their pathway here and run a trace route to see if and where it is timing out. We want to help you sanikte, but please don't get upset when it seems to me that you haven't really read our posts here and above. Take the time to get this resolved and forget about it.

It will be resolved if you can produce something for us to look at and see about their connection to our servers. We could have already put this to bed if you had asked them to do a ping and tracert. I posted asking for this information yesterday sanike, so help us move forward in helping your members. Looking just now I see that one of your members who posted here did get on your board this morning. :

Hi,
Thank you for answering and taking the time to do so with such a large explanation of what you want.
We have been trying to answer all questions that have been asked to us by the other person trying to help us out. But never until recently did we get the request to ping your site. I totally agree that this is the information that you guys need and I'm sorry about my frustration but so far the only reasonable questions I had been asked were wether if they were having trouble with the log in or what type of browser they were using or if they were behind a firewall. I has driven me insane that after answering, no, its not the IE, no, its not the firewall, and for God's sakes it's not a login problem, we just can't even get this people to display the forum I can't seem to explain myself or my fellows here.
I apologize for starting another thread, I just lost the first one I started in the middle of this frustration. It was not intended to flood your support forum.

Now, if you could please explain to me which command to use to ping the website I will more than gladly will explain step by step to my users on how to get the information you requested back to you.

Thanks

Oh, and very important, this is something else that happens which I've noticed.
Yes, you can see LadyGodiva last logged on the forum today or recently BUT the weird thing is that she doesn't see the forum even though the forum does seem to see her.
Take for example Sherrie, look at the time and day she was last seen, Monday November the 4th I believe, Sherrie has not been able to see the Forum since around the time when she signed up for the board. Then it let her see it for 2 days or so, and ever since then its been irregular.
THis is why I find it so odd.

Great! I don't have the exact codes handy on how to do this, but BbBoy or BbAdminMod might be able to get specifics on how to do the Ping and Tracert. It's way late and I just wanted to pop in again and let you know we were waiting on some thing and why it's important to get it.

Re: User ( 06:35:04 TueNov 12 2002 )

Are the users in question trying to access the board directly or from your website? If the latter, get them to try accessing the board directly.

Possibly they need to do some "housekeeping", i.e. delete their temp files, delete temporary internet files, defrag their computers. etc.

Any one of a number of factors could influence this.

I think we've covered all possible avenues here - if users have tried all of these, then there really is nothing else we can suggest. We cannot analyse all their browser, OS and firewall settings.

As suggested by BbBoy earlier in this thread, get them to do a traceroute by opening a DOS window and typing tracert denim.bbboy.net at the command prompt. That will "ping" our server and they can see where the holdup might be.

Sorry, I posted that last message in a hurry and didn't realise we were now on page 2 - I didn't see the posts on this page. The instructions are there for the traceroute anyway.

Re: User ( 07:10:21 TueNov 12 2002 )

Actually on my computer at least, you can't do a screen dump of a DOS window, so maybe this won't help you. However it will tell you how many "hops" between your computer and our server and if it stops somewhere before it reaches the final one, that will tell you where the holdup is. If any of your users have "Neotrace", this will get them the full information though - they just need to type in the url which is denim.bbboy.net.

Re: User ( 07:54:21 TueNov 12 2002 )

Oh and the IP# of denim.bbboy.net is 209.151.94.19 and there could be anything from 10 to 20 nodes between your computer and that server, depending (a) on where you are and (b) the route currently being taken (these change all the time).

We didn't mention the traceroute earlier, because (a) the other suggestions mentioned in this thread are usually sufficient and (b) this is not the easiest thing to do (or to explain), with it being a DOS command.

The symptoms you mention for Sherrie and LadyGodiva suggest to me that this could be an issue with their ISP's, as mentioned (I think) by BbAdmin (Pamster) earlier in this thread. I'll find it and repost it here.

Sometimes ISP's do a DNS updating which makes some sites/domains unavailable for a period of time-like you said it stopped and then started working again? That sounds like a DNS update.

I've also heard that sometimes ISP's unilaterally block sites that they consider *might* be undesirable in some way. You might suggest to the users in question that they they quiz their ISP's on this point.

I have posted a support page in the site that will help them ping your site and send the information to me so that I can send it to you.
As soon as I have an answer I will attach it to the thread.
As far as the forum being banned by an ISP I don't know. If this happened with them, what can I do to help them out? Do they call their ISP and talk to them or change ISP? which I doubt that will happen.
Why would they ban you guys from their service? I find that quite weird.
I'll ask them these questions anyway. Thanks.

Re: User ( 08:29:28 TueNov 12 2002 )

As I explained above, they will most likely not be able to make a screen shot to send to anyone, However what they can do is press the PrtScrn button on their keyboard and then paste the result into Notepad - this will give the traceroute readout for the latter part of the trace (it's unlikely they will be able to capture the whole trace). Then they can paste that into a post or an email and you can then post it here. It will look something like this:

I didn't say anything about "banning you guys from their service" - if an ISP did block our network, it would most likely be by accident. All that's required is for the user in question to enquire whether that has happened and if so, ask them to unblock the network. No, of course they don't need to change ISP's - what a strange notion.

The logs indicate that both sherrie and LadyGodiva have accessed the board, viewed threads and posted. This seems to confirm either that they need to do some computer "housekeeping" or there is an issue with their ISP's.
