'NEW POST' icon slow to disappear after reading ( 01:04:30 SatNov 23 2002 )

We are having a problem with our new board regarding the 'NEW POSTS' icon not being updated quick enough...

For example,

I log into our board and see the 'NEW POST(S)' icon next to one of the forums. So I click on the forum, and read the thread containing the new post.

When I then click on the root name of our board at the top of the page to return to the forum list, it still displays the 'NEW POST(S)' icon, even though I just read all the new posts within that forum. There seems to be a time delay as it won't disappear until a few minutes later.

Another similar problem is when I make a post, the 'NEW POST' icon appears again next to the forum I just posted in.

No, there's no delay - this is how it's designed to work.

In a sense, although you wrote the post when you created the new thread, you haven't viewed it as a thread - therefore it shows as new, until you either view it, or mark the forum read (which is normal practice when you've finished in a forum).

However if you make a reply, this won't happen as you did view the thread in order to reply to it.

OK thanks that explains about my own posts/replys.

But what about when I read other people's posts? When I return to the front index page it still displays the NEW icon next to the forum I've just read.

The only way I can remove it is to mark the forum as read, which is a bit of a pain

Is there any way of getting the NEW icon to recognise that I've read all the posts in the forum without having to click MARK ALL AS READ?

What I have noticed while using this site. Lets say right now I look at the links above and it says BBsupport Forums.. Tech Support..

If I click on Bb support forums it will still show new. But if I click on the tech support link first, then the Bbsupport forums, then I don't get a new post icon. I hope this helps. And I hope it makes sense!

Hi there [EGC]Frugal,

You can go to your User CP and in the Edit Settings screen two options above where you can input your birthday, you will see a option for:

Mark Threads Read With Forum
(Marks all threads read when marking a forum read)

Check the box besides that option and then once you've read a thread and mark a forum read then you will not see New images besides any threads that have not had a new reply since you last visited the forum. If you do not have this setting enabled then all threads you haven't read will show as new until you do or temporarily when you use the Mark Forum Read button.

I bet if you and any member bothered by the New images like that can enable this setting and be a lot happier. Have you enabled this setting sashagirl? If not I bet once you do it will be a lot nicer cruising forums.

You might also find it helpful to read this thread, where I've outlined the rationale for the way this all hangs together.
