anyone got a name on this fool so the rest of us can keep an eye out for him? or was he just an uregistered guest. also, if he had a fixed IP i wouldn't mind just going ahead and banning his IP myself..just to head any potential problem off at the pass.

Sorry, I forgot I can't edit a reply here. I know it sounds silly to have trashed all of his posts, perhaps I should explain.

Thid particular board is used by many people here in Alaska as not only a teaching tool, but also as a way to keep in contact with people from all over the state who reside in remote villages. The hacker hit us right at the busiest time of night, folks were trying to use the board and could not.

The hacker made the board unuseable by entering text in the subject line that expanded the board out to... who knows how many pages. You had to search real hard to even find the next post, or any post.

Then, once you clicked on his post, your browser tried to load the page but eventually crashed.

So you see, I had to get rid of this stuff. The board is not harmed, it was a real inconvenience for the users for about an hour is all.

Anyway, did not mean to write a book, just wanted to explain.

If it's a guest posting, it's a real headache actually - I had to download the entire log - 22MB which is one hell of a big file. I tried saving it, but ran out of RAM at the wrong moment and had to reboot and start all over again! Downloading took nearly 15 minutes each time I think. Even if I had saved it, I don't think I could have opened it to read it anyway, as it was so large.

In the end, while it was still in the browser (in the Windows temp folder) I searched for the word "Replied" (using CTRL+F), starting from the end of the file and working backwards. Fortunately, as not many people had posted after the incident, it wasn't long before I came across a series of guest postings, all with the same IP#. That identified our friend with complete certainty.

I could not have searched for this, using the normal search function in the Admin Center, because I didn't know the IP# at that time and there was nothing else useful to search on.

I have no problem with posting the IP# - it's 65.95.38.205

I think they were visiting my board a few mins ago, I didnt think anything about the ip# until I visited another board. Mine has been messed with in the font area, its ridiculously huge. most the time I mess it up myself, but not this time. So its a maintenance mode to protect it?

Do we have any idea where this person comes from?
I had a number very close to that on my board a minute ago. It might help to track him if we know roughly where he is or which iSP he is using???

Just ban the IP# - then he won't be able to lurk on your board. A number very close to that one could be in a totally different place - unless it's the same number, it's a different person.

JamieK, there's absolutely no way he can get into your board's admin center, so don't worry - any large fonts or whatever that are there, are of your own making...

Just as a general tool for other Admins here, you can find out who is the ISP by using

http://www.arin.net/whois/

Type the IP # into the Search box and it will tell you who is the ISP.

I'm sorry you got hit Jim but thanks for giving the rest of us a heads up!
