"Password Incorrect" help ( 15:50:23 MonFeb 17 2003 )

Hi, a member on the board I moderate is having a weird problem with his usernames. He originally registered under one name ("Algolei") and logged in fine, but after some time of posting he suddenly couldn't log in anymore - his password came up "password incorrect" even though it had previously worked.

So he simply reregistered as "Algolei's Alternate Login" and that also worked for some time, but now it's doing the same thing - coming up "password incorrect" even though it's the same password he's been using for months.

Now he's up to "Third Algolei" and is afraid of the same thing happening. Any suggestions? There is a thread containing more information here:

http://azure.bbboy.net/niftymessageboard-viewthread?forum=2&thread=37

Thanks for any help!

I am betting his history is set to a low number of days. That will delete your cookies and temporary net files for pages in history that reach that limit of days and are deleted. I think that if Algolei uses the 'Lost Password' link and logs in using it successfully they won't have this trouble again. There has to be some minor mistake in the password he is using or else that error would not come up. If he is copying and pasting he has to be sure there is no spaces accidentily picked up in the copy. OR if he is typing it in make sure he isn't using a capital 'o' when it calls for a zero '0'. I resent the password on the Algolei name just now, so have them try to log in using that and see if that doesn't help.

I also tried to log in using his user name and password, and I'm sure I typed it correctly, but I still got "password invalid". However, I'll have him give it a shot. Much thanks.

I hope this helps prove that the password isn't the problem, it is how it's being entered because I logged into the name just fine.

By the way, please tell Algolei that he should *never* post his password on your message board (or anywhere, for that matter). It is just begging for trouble.

Once he's able to log in again, have him change it to something more easily remembered (but not too easy!).

Even if the cookie gets deleted, there's no harm done, as a new one gets generated as soon as a user logs in again. History files incidentally are simply internet addresses of recently visited websites and when they are deleted, either manually or automatically according to your setting, only they get deleted and not any cookies.

Edit: Just in case you're wondering, the post just above mine by "Algolei" was BbAdmin logging in as him to demonstrate that the password is working OK.

Thank you Medesha. Let him know he can use the Lost Password link to retrieve the other two names' passwords just in case he ever wanted to use them-we have a feature in the next release for username swapping that might be something he would want the other names for.
