Admin Assistants & IP adresses ( 22:40:13 WedApr 30 2003 )

I would like to appoint some admin assistants but do not wish them to read IPs yet. Are admin assistants able to view IP numbers?

No, they aren't - an assistant admin can only have abilities which you specifically assign to him/her. They don't have admin status as such.

how is an assistant different from a moderator? I considered using this title for my new forum-specific moderator, but went with mod instead, as I was unsure of the power involved. With the mods, I know I can regulate what they see and what they don't. Except, I'd like to have a forum that's accessable to only the admins and mods, not other members. But since I have a hidden forum already, just for admins, I'm afraid that if I enable the mod viewing ability to a new mod/admin forum, it will enable viewing ability for the admin only forum.

hope I didn't just confuse the crap out of you... it does me

I am interested in assistant admins as well, at the moment I am in England, and it always seems that all the big things happen when I am asleep. I would like to make one of my mods an admin, but I didnt know what all they could do on the forum. How do we assign assistant admins and fix their powers?

When you make someone assistant admin. So to your admin dept. and

click edit users
Make administrator
and then you will get a place where you chose what powers you want them to have.

Go to edit users and check their name, then go down to assign assistant admin and you have several options what you can assign them. Also how long you would like it to last

editboardtemplate
editboardsettings
setwelcomeemail
editprofanityfilter
optimize
editbbring
editemoticons
editposticons
editimages
easystyle
showuserscreen - Note, this must be enabled if you want the asst to use any of the Edit Users functions
banusernames
deletemember
disableuserssigs
assigncustomtitles
setprivateaccess
assignfloodimmunity
assignseehiddenforum
bulkpm
editpostcount
disablepersonalpics
banemail
warnuser
deleteallusersposts
allowhtml

Expire assistant in days?

So you would have control over what they can do.If you assign them admin powers they would have all the power that you do.When they are an assistant you can regulate the power.

There is also a box allowing you to give them access to extra features that you specify. From my experiance, you can specify at least two... I have a mod I want to be able to upload some graphics he makes, and I also want him to be able to do some other stuff. I specified it, and then check-marked the box that appeared.

Toky: If you want a mod/admin only forum, and don't want to enable 'hidden viewing ability' you can do what I did..
Simply create a forum, name it what you want, then set all the posting restrictions to 'mods-admins only' and then the viewing restrictions to 'specified users, mods, admins,'. there are two downsides. 1) everytime you make a mod, you have to manually allow access to the forum. 2) they have to be a mod in that forum in order to post. lol... If you don't want their name to show when you set them as mod, you can 'edit forum settings' and delete their user name from the 'mod display' string. which will, in effect, keep it from listing the names in that particular forum.

Hope this helped someone...:wink::rolleyes:

This is exactly what I needed! Thank you so much! I enjoy having help on the board, especially in forums where a member has expertise, but I had a rough learnning experience with having someone have too much access to everyone's information.

I tell ya, an easy way to find out who your friends really are is to give them admin powers....

Thanks, everyone! I'm even going to print this out so when it's 3 a.m. and I can't sleep, I'll be able to find the great info you gave me.

That's why we don't recommend it and why there's a warning message when you are about to make someone an admin. This is a very dangerous power in the wrong hands and bear in mind also, that they can de-admin you, ban you and even delete you from your own board if they turn nasty.

yes, I am the only Admin on my board. I make assistants when I need help. Then, I have control over what they can do.

I think this was a good feature and one that many board owners appreciate. I am very glad we were able to get it into the 1.4.2 release.

Is there a way to give hidden forum ability on one hidden forum but not another? I don't like having a private forum that's visible to members, even though it's only for mods and admins to communicate. I also am not going to open my admin (hidden) forum to anyone who's not currently an admin.

As for the person who turned nasty on me, no one saw it coming. She never exhibited any weirdo behavior before, so I had no reason not to trust her. As a matter of fact, we came up with our board idea together !! But I was able to stop her before she did anything really nasty. Now she spends her time spreading rumors and personal information about me to others. Good thing I never told her much...

Thanks all, I use this forum more and more all the time!

I had a similar experiance, pooh bah..
Only, it was on a different, easily hacked board. And it was my best friend. He wasn't trying to be a pain, he just took over the admin functions and booted me out. He thougt he was being funny. Now he is head-mod.. (Full mod powers w/ certain admin asst. powers) because he is extremely experienced.. But I still will never make him a full admin.

I like to think I have a great sense of humor, too, but that one is just not funny!!

One of my helpers put something in the filter so that everytime his name came up, it was preceded by "sexy". It took me 2 days to figure out what he had done!!! LOL.... he got a little lecture, only because I don't like those sorts of surprises... Now that I know more about working a board, I don't freak out so easily, but yes, anything could happen.

When I first created my board and opened it to a few people, one guy said he was able to hack into the admin functions and view the hidden forum. He's a smart guy, with lots of board experience, and a friend (??!!) but he would never tell me just how he was able to get into the functions of admin. It was before I'd set up an admin password for major changes, but still..... on the one hand, there's no reason to disbelieve him, but on the other, how come he can't tell me how he did it, so that I could have reported a bug or at least made sure my own settings were secure??

Some people will do anything to see their own names in lights, huh. You're right tho---these smart people are exactly the ones we want on our side!

Thanks,
Amy

Precisely why I'm the only admin on my board. I do have 2 assistant admins, but I want to make sure that even my most trusted members can't mess with me....hence they're only assistant admins and not admins.

Not sure if the answer was given about having one forum hidden from say Mods, making it a Admin only forum and the answer is yes. You would just make the Posting restrictions/Viewing ability set to Admins Only in the Forum's Settings screen and check the box for Hide Forum.

When you have a forum you want the Mods to see or say a special forum for only certain members and you don't want to offend others, you can have the Viewing Restrictions set to Specified Users, Mods & Admins (Like in a case where you don't want to give the mods power in the staff forum, but you want them to be able to read and post there with you) but you have to keep in mind that you have to 'assign private forum access & hidden forum viewing abilities' in the Edit Users screen.

A list will show up and you can choose what forums you want whichever user to be able to see and post in. If you don't give someone the ability to see a hidden forum, like a Admin Only one, they will not see it is there.

Re: Admin Assistants & IP adresses ( 18:37:13 MonMay 5 2003 )

I prefer hidden forums, as I think it can be offensive to see a forum that says "you do not have access" and I don't like having that on my board. So my admin forum is hidden. I don't want the mods reading the admin forum, I share it with my co admin only.

So I was hoping to have 2 hidden forums, one the mods could see (mod forum) and one they could not even see at all (admin forum), but it doesn't look like I can do that. So maybe I'll have to give them hidden forum viewing ability but then make the admin forum private so they can't read it (even tho they will see that it's there---this is what I hate---people seeing things they can't touch).

Guess I'll just mess around with it a bit till I get the best solution. Till then, we are relying on PMs which are often slow and get 'server busy' messages.

Thanks for all the ideas, everyone!

You misunderstood me Pooh Bah...You CAN have 2 seperate hidden forums... When you go to set the viewing ability up, just make it Admins only and the mods will NOT see that forum, they will think you only have just one private forum. Under each name will show the Hidden Forum's name and a box so just don't check the box for the Admin forum and the mods won't see it or know it's there.
