Cannot sign in on a redirect address. ( 22:19:52 ThuApr 11 2002 )

Hi Chris,Pam

I have opened a redirect service to make my forum URL shorter.

The problem I have is that I cannot sign in on the redirect address.

The new address I am trying to use is
http://wellmashed.tk

I have cleared my cookies folder and temp internet files but still I cannot sign in.

I also logged out of my account before I did this and closed IE down.

When I went back to the normal address I was signed in even though I had deleted cookies as well.

Is there something I am missing or is it something you may have to do at your end like create a file or something to accept it?

Any help appreciated...

It's a "feature" of IE6. MS decided to add some new "pricavy & security" options to IE6, but which don't increase privacy or security, but managed to break a lot of things.

Have a look at http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnpriv/html/ie6privacyfeature.asp . A "feature" is that it tries to stop 3rd party cookies. And, when the board loads in a frame, then we're considered to be the 3rd party (as we're just a frame inside "somebody else's" site), so it doesn't allow any cookies.

There is a possible fix, but there's a worry that it won't be compatible with older browsers than IE5. I've been testing it out for a while, but can't see it being implemented here until it's a standard rather than partially supported......

Anyway, if your redirection service gives you the option, you can forward to your board instead of encasing it in a frame. Or, you can just risk the frame, as it doesn't affect anyone except IE6 users.

Cheers for the info m8.

After reading this I went and had a quick play with privacy settings in IE6 and came up with this soloution that works (just so if anyone else has this problem).

You have to close all browsers and open internet options then click privacy.

Reduce the privacy options right down to nothing with the setting bar and close internet options.

Open the page up using the redirect address and log in.

Then close the redirected page.

Open the redirected page again to make sure it is working and then you can go back into internet options / privacy and reset your privacy settings back to how they were.

Because the cookie has allready been accepted when you reduced the options it does not kick it back out again when you reset them and there should be no more problem.

Problem solved...:thumb:

hi, wellmashed, chris

I wouldn't risk the frame - on my other board I have removed it from my website frameset because of the I.E.6 problem chris mentioned.

My tracker shows that out of 420 unique visitors over the last 6 weeks, 36% of users have IE6 - more and more people are upgrading.

Just saw your new post, wellmashed - what you say is true but do you really want to have to tell all your potential members to go through this process?

I lost many potential members because of this problem, even when I posted similar info - they just can't be bothered jumping through all these hoops and personally I don't blame them!
