Frost Server ~ High Demand Issue ( 16:38:12 SatFeb 21 2004 )

I am use to seeing this at certain times. But lately, it seems to be happening a LOT. A lot more that what seems usual to me and for longer periods of time. Is this something anyone else is noticing?

I'm noticing it too. It used to just happen around 7pm Pacific time, but now it's happening as late as midnight or as early as noon.

I haven't run into this on my board on frost at all, but it might could be related to yahoo using it's own spidering software and seperating itself from using google's. Right now all three guests on support are spider bots. I would think that it has to be related to that. Can you see if there are guest IP's on your board when this happens that are 'crawlers' or spiders? It would mean you'd have to click on the IP# in the who is online (only admins can do this) and see if it resolves to some spider/caching/crawler type hostname. They seem to come in waves twice a month. If you have even one forum open to guest viewing your board will be visited by the various search engine spiders.

That number has doubled-there are six spiders on support now, so I am pretty sure that is what is happening. We can't control the spider's effects on our servers, but that means it will be better soon once they finish their rounds.

There are eight on now and to give an example of what you'd see if you clicked on the guest's IP# in the who is online it would look something like this:

IP: 64.68.92.178
Host: crawl5.googlebot.com

Those are google spiders, I will see if we have others on later that I can add here so you have an idea of one of the other bots that crawl the internet and our servers.

Here is one from AOL:

IP: 152.163.252.71
Host: cache-rc07.proxy.aol.com

No bother at all RogueAngel. :thumb: I've noticed that people ask about this saying it was recently hard to get around without getting the High Demand alerts, right when the search engines are in full force.

I only have one area open for guests to view. And I rarely if ever see a guest on the board. But I'll be sure to keep my eye open for em if it gets slow again.

Thanks

Just a quick 'for what it's worth' post.....I just looked at my board and we've got 14 spiders on at the moment and we're on Bb server, but yeah they are out. If I'm not mistaken about how this works...even if you have your own board sort of shut down to them, I would imagine heavy traffic to other boards could slow the whole server down. In other words all boards would be affected even if you personally aren't seeing a bunch of bots on your own board. Pamster's right. Every month when they hit, the number of high demand pages increase and there's really nothing to do but bear with it a couple of days till the search engines finish up.

It is not always easy to predict the spiders patterns of visiting, but I am sure with yahoo begining to use its own indexing software there will be more spiders around the network. But that is part of having a board that is open to guest viewing-if you want to have your board indexed to be included in search string results then you want them to visit, but they will keep coming back revisiting old threads-even on dead boards if they are open to guest viewing. That is part of why we are purging the servers of the abandoned boards on the network. This server (the bb.bbboy.net) was purged last year and then azure was done. We have yet to schedule the remaining ones, but they will be done. In the mean time you may come across a board that is 'Locked' and the reason given is that its Trial Period Expired. That is being done to help cut off the spidering of those old board.
