Problematic Pop Ups-please post source from page pop up activated from... ( 18:08:01 WedApr 28 2004 )

Board Plan: http://azure.bbboy.net/freespirits

A few members on my board have complained about this on the past, and I couldn't reply with anything useful, until experienced it personally. One of the ads sends, without my permission, a file called hp2.exe to my harddisk, it tries to connect to an outside server, it has also changed the home page in my browser and inserted a porn ad pop-up into it. In other words - a spyware is sent with one of the pop-ups.

Also, it's a paid board, which means it should have 2 pop-ups per IP in 12 hours, if I remember correctly. But sometimes an ad pops up, and it splits into two ads, and and the same thing happens when I click to the next page. 4 ads instead of 2.

Well, any answers? I understand that advertisement is crucial for Bbboy.net, but so is my computer's safety - for me. And if some of our members stop visiting the board because of this, other advertisements won't be seen by them either.

Is this just on the board's main page or a particular thread or something?

A BbAdmin will be along shortly to assist you

It's against BbBoards TOU to use a pop-up blocker on Best Boards

No, it's not on a particular board.

I've spoken to a member who uses a pop-up blocker. She says that this ad bypasses the blocker. Which probably means that it's not just a regular graphic ad, it's an intentional spyware-sending pop-up.

Next time I catch it, I'll try to be more specific about its details.

The only way we are going to be able to find the source of this if it is indeed coming from one of our ad networks is to have the source code from a board page that was loaded when this happens. Right click on the board page you are on when this happened, go to 'View Source' and then send it to us either posting it here or putting it in an email to me at pamster@cyber-soup.com with a specific subject line of BbBoard Pop up code and I will make sure BbBoy sees it. This has not happened to BbBoy or myself so until it does we cannot track it. If someone can do copy the source of a page from the board that was loading when the problem pop up loaded that gives us what we need to stop allowing whatever network is sending that out to us and in turn sending it to you.

Please do NOT use pop up blockers on our network as you are stealing revenue from us and that is a big reason of why we are NOT taking any new boards OR allowing free boards to remain. If you use a pop up blocker you're violating our TOU and abusing our service.

Also wanted to mention that those who get pop ups that are triggered when you close one, please right click and view source and follow the above instructions so that we can track the ad network that is sending those because we definitely do NOT want people to have more then the two pop ups per IP per 12 hours on fixed boards. We appreciate your help in this matter so that we can find and remove this from our network so that you and your members aren't being bombarded with things that are NOT supposed to be happening.

Also, check with the admins of that board and ask if they have any javascript on their board. I find that those that have a "tag board" installed have constant pop ups that are constantly popping up like you described, where no matter how many times you click on it another pops up.

Pamster, I know from experience that some of those pop up ads, won't allow you to view source when you right click, it just is not an option on some of them. . . which makes it harder to get you the information that you need.

It isn't the pop up ad itself we need source from. It is the page you were on-on the board-that is where it will ID the network the ads came from. I haven't had this happen to me yet so I am unable to provide BbBoy with a source copy of a page where it happened. If anyone can do this we definitely can and WILL remove the network these ads are coming from. We use mutliple networks so getting the source from the board page you are on at the time this occurred will really help us out in tracking and ending this problem for everyone.

I didn't get any pop ups there Momsheri, but thank you for the source, I don't see any traces of what would lead us to one of the ad networks and that is most likely because it is a Variable board. Have you downloaded and run AdAware? I do that several times a week since I visit a lot of sites that are elsewhere and get all kinds of garbage (spyware) and that removes it.
