URGENT~Need some HELP!! ( 20:54:59 SatJul 31 2004 )

Board Plan: Fixed

I am not very familiar with the IP feature....What exactly is the IP number that appears next to a person's name?
If you look in their log from the forum and it's got like 15 different IP's in there~could that mean that they are letting other people view our board? I know this sounds silly but I really need someone to take a look at something on our board. This stems back from a prior incident in which our members were threatened. I'd appreciate your quick response. The above board name is not our current name. Due to these threats we had to re-name our board. :thankyou:

Hi luvtkinPA

The IP number that appears next to a person's name is a special number that their ISP gave them when they connected to the internet

A large proportion of people have dynamic IP#'s - ones that change each time they connect to the Internet. The IP# for AOL users often changes even when just going to a new page! IP numbers are often reused as well, so it might appear in your boards log that a group of members share the same IP number  Here is a link to a place where you can look up the ip and see what company that IP number is from - http://combat.uxn.com/

This is what I was referring to. This person says that they didn't let someone into our site so I was comparing the log from May. The 2 numbers are totally different here. Could it be a possibility that this person gave someone else her username and password to get into our site? Also, after you look at this log, could you please delete it from this thread? Thank you so much.

I used to post a lot from work, so if you looked at my log, it would show at least a half dozen different ip addresses.
Like Nickdisk said, totally unrelated people on opposite ends of the U.S. can share an IP address if they go thru the same internet provider. And one person can have 20+ IP addresses if they use a provider with dynamic IP #'s

My best guess would be that that person is on dial-up, going thru an ISP like AOL where when a new webpage is browsed a new ip is logged.

Thanks for your help.....I think that I have already found my answer....This person in question did indeed give her password & username to another person. At least I still have all of the threats saved and I am planning on taking some kind of legal action. Thanks again!

Hi luvtkinPA  I've just checked the IP's for you, and most belong to AOL (and in the state of VA). Theres one IP number thats belongs to a different ISP though, but TKsWildKat might of just used a different ISP to connect that time, as it was used in VA as well

As AOL uses dynamic IP#'s, everytime TKsWildKat connects to the internet, they're given a new IP number  The IP# for AOL users often changes even when just going to a new page as well! I dont think you've got anything to worry about
