One more question about emoticons ( 18:07:47 WedMay 8 2002 )

I removed the emoticons from the message post page because I didn't want users to go trough the grief of loading the images. (Plus all the movement is downright distracting!)

On ****** and other message boards, a link is provided to load an external page that shows all the emoticons as well as the abbreviations for them. This is nice for power users who soon memorize the the abbreviations and for the newbie who doesn't know exactly how the abbreviations correlate to specific emoticons.

Does this board have anything like that?

No, that's what the box on the right is for. Many people who don't want them showing up on the right prefer the "select menu", which goes above the text box, with just the names in them, you might want to try that.

I understand that. What I'm asking is if there's a way to pop up another window with a cross-reference of what would appear if a specific string that appears in the select box is entered. The way this board works, it's an either/or situation. Either you see the emoticons or you don't. You can't just pop up the emoticon cross reference only when you need it.

Actually, when they're in the select menu, you don't see them, unless you select the select menu.

You can easily make your own page with the emoticons on (or even put it on your welcome page, click "Welcome page" in your admin centre) and link to it.

I think what gracef is saying is, , in the select menu you don't see what the emoticon will look like.

Yup, that's why BbBoy suggested making a page with the emoticons on it (or have it on the Welcome page).

People will soon get the hang of what they all look like.

I understand what you're saying though - a link you could click on the posting screen would be handy. Maybe BbBoy could add that feature in a future release.

You've got it, bridgeaddict! That's exactly what I want!

In the meantime, I guess I'll just create my own page. It won't take too long, though it's another thing to remember when I find a new emoticon that I can't live without.

Something that grace is referring to would be helpful for those of us who have 300+ emoticons on our boards...

heheh... Like me, for instance. The click box is not very easy for someone with 300+ emotes as it takes forever for the page to download, and the select box isn't in alphabetical order which makes it REALLY difficult to find what you are looking for.. but I know BbBoy said that was on the to-do list.

I would really like a linked page myself... or, have it where you can see 20 emotes, and have the rest linked over to another page if the poster wants to use additional ones.

We've talked about adding something like that but I think it is a lwer prioity then some of the other things we are working on. I can definitely see where having this would be a definite plus.

i see the point because the more emoticons you have the longer it takes to download but if you have them in the select menu you cannot see what they are until posted. if the page was created how could we create a link from where the emoticons menu is already??

I'm having this problem too. I'd love to have what Indica Rose suggested. Actually, I believe I suggested it a while ago, and bbboy did say it was on the to do list. It would be very helpful!

OK... I started to do this, but for some odd reason, the File Hosting page in the admin area doesn't allowed upload of HTML files.

I changed the extension to .php, and it works. But the .htm extension file failed to upload.

???

That's because the File Hosting is for hosting of files mainly (images, javascript files, css files etc), not web sites.

Have you tried using your Welcome Page?
