Hi,

Is there a tutorial for this that I can't find?

I want the instructions for joining a board. I need to tell my friends how to join my board.

I've made most of my forums accessable to members only but I'm not sure how they become members.

I tried visiting another board to work it out. I found boards that had 'you are not allowed in this forum' or some such thing. I tried accessing the forum hoping I would be directed to an application page or something but am only redirected back to the main page.

As my board's admin, I can't see what a new visitor would see. I want to make it as simple as possble for them by including basic instructions.

We are working on a new Tutorial but what iti sounds like you're looking to do is set up a MBA BbBoard but yet still make it easy for members to join...Is that it? You want to make your board hidden from Guest Viewing? If that is the case then consider that the search engine's spiders won't be able to spider your board for addition to their search string results. That and the fact that it makes them register a name before they are even able to apply for membership.

When you see the 'You do not have access to this forum' is seen that means that the admins have it private-not hidden-if it is hidden then anyone who does not have ability to view that forum will not eve see it there on the board. If it is private that means the forum is still seen and you can put a note in the forum's description fo what is required to gain access to that forum.

If you allow guest viewing at the very least, even if you disable guest posting, you can have people register names and if you have enabled Dynamic Registration and Auto member when registering selected (These option are in the Edit Board Settings Screen) you will have members added to your list when the register even if they do not post right away. Hope that this was helpful to you in deciding on what level you want to have it open to and what the pro's and con's are. Not sure when the new tutorial will be ready, but this is covered in it. :wink:

Hi pamster,

I didn't want MBA because I Do want guests to be able to visit the board and access (view and post) on a few forums.

However, most of the forums I want to be accessed, both view and post, to members I allow only.

You say to put a note on what is required to join. Like what? Is there no specific procedure through the board? Or do they need to e-mail me personally?
If so, what happens next? How do I allow them to access a forum.

I don't want them hidden just accessible to 'members'.

Hope I made myself clearer.

Ok sounds like you want to be able to have people allowed in after they are established regulars-correct? Where you edit them into the private forum individually. You can have a note in the forum's descrption-like if you want them to email you put that there or if you want to make it so that people have to have say 50 posts on the board before being able to get in then you say that there.

In the Edit Forums>Settings screen you will see the place to change the forum name and under that a 'Forum Description' input field there where you can write your description and let people know in a sentence or two what it takes to gain access. You just go in and on this same screen make the choices for starting Polls, New Threads and New Polls set for Users, Mods & Admins. Then the last one for who can VIEW threads, & Polls is where you select Specified Users, Mods & Admins. That will make the Forum private and if you had it to Guests, Users, Mods & Admins for other forums you wanted open that will do it so you can attract potential new members. :smile:

That's basically what I've done. Made them viewed by users, mods & admins only.

I guess I was getting too technical. I thought that visitors would be directed to some form of password input or application type window. Your features are so good here that I just expected soemthing that brilliant! lol

Only prob is that in the descriptions bit I have a description of the forum. Putting in the 'how to acces' is too long for me. I have to work out a way to tell people to e-mail me for access. I suppose in my welcome forum, where i explain how to use the board.

We try to get everyone's questions answered ASAP and thinking about it now you could perhaps add something about it to your Welcome Email (If you've set one up) or even your Welcome Page itself would be a good place to add a small description on gaining access to the private forums. :smile:

We have a feature coming out that will allow you to set up automatic entry for members when they reach a certain level (one of your board's User Levels that you decide) they will be added to a private forum you've set up to allow automatic member admission basing it on user levels. Is that more along the lines of what you would really like or are you wanting something like a forum password asked for before a member can post in this private forum?

Hiya,

The feature to allow membership after a certain amount of posts is a great idea, but not relevant for me. though I did use it for one forum.

I'm thinking more along the lines of password entry.

It may make it clearer if I explain my board.

It is a study board for fellow students, but I would like others, such as those thinking of enrolling on the course or those simply interested in the subject, to be able to visit and communicate to students.

So I want visitors but don't want them having access to specific study forums.

I will include an explanation in my welcome e-mail or such as you suggest and will keep my ear to the ground of any upgrades you make.

While I'm here (good grief!) my personal pic avator shows up here but not on my own board. huh!?

Ok I can see that you do not have the posticons, emoticons, personal pics and personal icons enabled so none will show up-you'll need to go into the Admin Center>Edit Forums>Pull down in the menu of the Forum you want to edit, release the button when Edit Forum Settings is highlighted. In there at the bottom you'll see the invidiual settings for Posticons, Emoticons, Personal Pics and Personal Icons. Check all four boxes if you want all four enabled and hit Submit and then your pic and icons will all showl. :smile:
