Personal server-side backups - just click, and your board will be backed up on our side, no need to download the backup file7.85 (Avg)
Optional freemail provider (hotmail et al) blocker - optionally block access to your board from anyone using a free mail provider4.15 (Avg)
"Only log me in from this computer" option - prevent others from logging in to your account (even if they guess your password)6.80 (Avg)
Admin functionality block - optionally put an extra password on admin functions, that will need to be entered for every major admin event7.15 (Avg)
Optional email approval - require that an e-mail confirmation is sent out before any major admin event is processed6.65 (Avg)
"View" flood control. Stop someone from viewing more than X pages per minute.6.30 (Avg)
Optional blocking of users with suspicious IP's7.95 (Avg)

I'm sitting here wondering about the age we live in online today, while 2 message boards (on a rival message board system, not us) have been completely "hacked" - totally wiped out by "the underground".

I never want that to happen to ANY BbBoard. And it hasen't yet. There is no doubt that people will try. Let's defeat them before they even begin.

Please rate the above options from 1 thru 10, 10 being something that you would think would be very effective for stopping "hackers", and 1 being something that'd do just the opposite.

Here's a list of things that we ALREADY have in place to stop them:

* Automatic daily, weekly, and monthly backups. These back up all boards, free or paid. You can request a restore from me at any time by e-mailing bbboy@bbboy.net . We can restore your whole board, or just specific forums.

* Manual backup. Download the backup file, and upload it again to restore it.

* Flood control that doesn't only work on registered members. Guest users are subject to any flood control limits you put upon them too.

* NO drop-off limit. On rival message board system(s), there is a certain limit of the number of posts you can have in a forum. So, the "hackers" just post enough for them to all drop off the end, and job well done. This isn't possible with BbBoard, as there's no limit. The only thing they would achieve would be a waste of time, as all the posts would still be there.

* General security. No HTML is allowed in sigs, or posts by guests/general users. Admins/mods can use HTML in posts (by the use of putting the [ html] tag somewhere in the post)

* Me. Plain & simple. Any user found even attempting to/suggesting that they will hack a board will be globally banned by username & email, meaning that they won't even be able to view any board. I am totally against any of this childish "hacking", and I will not stand to ever see it happen on any BbBoard. If it ever does, then I will personally make sure that they don't get away with it.

* Membership Screening. Turn this option on, and only people who are on your user list will be able to view/post at your board. You may know this feature as MBA.

* Advanced logging. We log EVERYTHING that happens on any BbBoard. IP#'s, usernames, actions, times. Everything is logged, nothing is left out. Just a quick search through the master log, and yay, we've found our "hacker".

* Willingness to prevent. Prevention is always better than restoring backups. If anyone has any other ideas for prevention of "hacking", let me know.

The next release (V1.2.6) is being aimed for the weekend. The release after that will be a special security-concious release incorporating the anti-hacking technologies that are being rated in this poll.]

In case you lost the point in reading that (), please rate the thigns at the top of this post from 1 thru 10, 10 being the most effective, and 1 being the opposite.

Only option I don't agree with is the "optional freemail blocker".

With Sharon & I having a "samples" board there are lots of folks who use a freemail account to have confirmations sent to (heck on my main website we offer freemail !) - so if we block those the majority of people who sign up will be shot down right from the get-go !

I think these all are really good options that admins can use selectively to try to protect their boards frmo attacks like this. What happened over the weekend to our friend's boards hosted elsewhere is just unbelieveable and I totally agree-prevention is the key-since a hacker will see he can't get in and get tired and go hunt for game elsewhere if you know what I mean. :smash:

I'm all in agreement with that ... unfortunately it seems to happen all to often on an '******' board  And the 'higher ups' are either too busy or just not involved enough to end that type of behavior !!

BBoy .. go show em how it's done !!!!!!!

Yup ~ as opposed to rival message board sysytems, I'm here every day, pretty much. I don't see why you shoudl have to wait 3 days for a simple restoral...

Anyways, one other thing we're adding to that list of features being added is password encryption. Passwords will be encrpyted in the cookie, so that even if users manage to get a cookie-stealing script to work, they'll only "steal" a load of garbage, and not the actual password. This one is a simple addition, and will be in this weekends' release - not waiting for the security release..

All I can say is WOW. I hadn't planned on moving my recipe board over here, because recipes are harder to move. But now after reading all these, I think I might after my gold expires. You are really on the ball Chris, I wish that other ****** admins could see how much better Best Boards is compared to ******.

Thank you BlackSparrow, we created Best Boards with users in mind and it is nice to hear how much you appreciate it isn't it Chris? We'll continue improving it and adding things to make the user experience nicer and more efficient.

We don't ever have to be a million boards strong to be the best IMHO. We got BbBoy to program things users dreamed of and continue dreaming up and we have good users here who support what we're doing and that makes Chris and I both eager to get online each day.

Right Chris? :thumb:

See, this guy is a real programmer who provides a real service, unlike certain other messageboard providers who shall remain nameless  Listen to him, he knows of what he speaks. My board on the other server (not this one) was totally wiped out and they don't even want to give it back to me (and they're rude about it after *I* tried to help *them* find the hackers). :thumb:

Thanks! Might I add more reason to use this as your messageboard of choice, ... the er, competiton's board gave me a backup that went back a month, I lost 2,000 posts and 10,000 views after having the highest level of security I could, and just a day or two after the site hacking they released a new version with a heightened security feature for accounts :rotflmao: Yeah whatever

This server rules !!! :thumb::loveya:

I can't believe you lost that many posts Candace. I am so sorry you lose them and that the other system couldn't protect your community better. :ohwell:

Yep, I learned the hard way. Heh, I joined Best Boards on Jan. 14, and that's the same date ****** was able to restore posts to us. Just ridiculous. :smash:

All of those are fabulous things BbBoy! I am very impressed with all you've coded together to empower board admins to better protect their boards and accounts from problems. I think that is great about downloading a copy of your account details, signatures and prefs. I think this was a great release!
