2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,"
"13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived."
Evil, according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary:
1 a : morally reprehensible : sinful, wicked <an evil impulse> b : arising from actual or imputed bad character or conduct <a person of evil reputation>
2 a archaic : inferior b : causing discomfort or repulsion : offensive <an evil odor> c : disagreeable <woke late and in an evil temper>
3 a : causing harm : pernicious <the evil institution of slavery> b : marked by misfortune : unlucky
In our society today, it is becoming increasingly apparent that: 1) conditions around us are getting worse and, 2) the same is happening to people as well. We not only live in "evil" times, we live amongst evil people.
In this, there are a few things that we need to grasp. One of the most important is that men fashion their surroundings. In our text above, "... perilous times shall come." BECAUSE "MEN SHALL BE..." reveals the truth of our situation. We live in what we and others have created and caused. If I set fire to my home then stand back and watch as it burns to the ground, I have made myself homeless. There is none else to blame for it. Yet in our day, there is the tendency - almost frantic need - to blame someone else or something for an individual's circumstance. Maybe it was upbringing, neighborhood conditions, oppression due to skin color or nationality, lack of opportunity to succeed and so on. We all know the excuses. The reality is, if we as individuals or as a people choose to behave badly, then the consequences of our behavior rest on our own shoulders.
Another concept which is to be learned is that the situations we live in are a reflection of what men are in behavior and character - NOT our professed ideals nor those others believe of us. Let's go back to my burning home. What caused me to strike the match and toss it into a puddle of gasoline - gasoline that I so liberally dowsed the entire interior with? What moved me to such extreme action? Displeasure with the weather report? Dissatisfaction with the interior temperature? Maybe it was the way my wife had arranged the furniture or that she had re-arranged it again. But when asked why any particular deed was done, it's commonly reported that so-and-so, "is a good person". GOOD PEOPLE DO NOT BURN THEIR OWN HOMES DOWN !!!!! Further, good people do not violate the the moral code which defines their goodness and separates it and them from evil.
Finally, those who are causing as well as who contribute to the cause of the current morally reprehensible situation will continue in the downward spiral. This is not a very appealing truth but reality is what it is. If some offence - real or imagined - causes me to torch my own home, don't expect that I will be swinging a hammer on the next Habitat for Humanity project. This may sound a bit humorous so let me put it another way: since we have collectively watched as the president and his regime dismantles this Nation along with the Founding Documents which provide the structure for her, don't look for any of them to reverse direction and join the next TEA Party gathering in DC. Rather, watch as they attempt to demonize, patronize and marginalize it. IF(and that's a huge "if") any of them should join, it would be to gather information and to corrupt rather than help to restore what they have been and are destroying.
We live in evil times, in part, because men have taken to living based on the evil in their own hearts. We live in evil times, in part, because good men have been silent and sat idle for too long. My home could have been saved if you knew I was contemplating burning it down. It could have been saved if you saw me with the gasoline can and matches and you made some effort to intervene.
"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." (Edmund Burke)
The point to all this is not to focus on the evil of our day but rather to serve as a call to action against the evil that seems to reign. It is my conviction that if our Nation - The United States of America - is to survive these times, her "good people" must stand now. This stand is not just against the evil that seems to surround with threats to overwhelm but FOR that which is right and good. Our "stand" for "right and good" will, of necessity, include spreading what we know. There must be action taken against the evil to counter it.
To remain silent and inactive is to stand idly by, watching, while someone burns a building down. The trouble is - we're all in the building.
Father in Heaven, You raised this Nation up, You set her high on a hill. By Your Grace she came into being and what she was. In raising her up, we, her people, were given great benefits - benefits that could only be sustained if properly maintained by us - her people. Help us to become participants in her maintenance. Help us to become like You - good. The kind of good a person needs to be. Give us Your Character and Nature as seen in Christ. Work in and through us. In Christ's Holy Name...
