Karok Indian Tribe
I saw a one hour documentary on the Karuk Indians on KQED out of San Francisco. Where did they get the money for so much air time?
It wasn't hard to figure out the theme of their one hour informative broadcast. They, the Karoks, were put on earth by the Creator as caretakers of the land and that means all the trees, rivers, fish, land and deer, etc., that they are responsible for. They were constantly referring to their past and reviving their customs. I am not sure about one custom they recently revived but the last time they performed 'it' was in 1912.
Those speaking and explaining the Karok life resented the past 150 years as the whites came into 'their land' and made a mess of it (lumber and mining). One of the speakers was Leaf Hillman. Didn't he break a beer bottle over his wife's head? They did not seem dilusional or inebriated.
They did seem determined to get get everybody off their land. I did not know they had any land. Do they have a reservation? Well, they are anxious to take better care of the land than all those white people who are trespassing on Karuk lands.

Re: Karok Indian Tribe
That show aired a couple of months ago for the first time. It was done by KQED, one of the several Bay Area Public Ed stations. About half of it was footage from the Karuk website. Just spreading the K message. Keep in mind that the Bay Area as a whole is very liberal and will buy into their plight. No wonder the K's file their law suits in ALCO.

For those that felt the "missed" it just go to the K website and watch the K video there.

Have you seen the latest (Dec.) National Geographic? Klamath dam removal. No mention of mining though.

In all kindness I am a Niner but I think maybe you guys could talk about the Karuk on a personall email level. Anyone can read what we are saying here. We do not need to throw gas on the fire we can win this thing honestly without slander or discrimination and what is being said is borderline of that. I will always mantain respect for the rights and privledges that the New 49ers have worked so hard for. Thankyou Happy Thanksgiving!

You are right Tobin1. Being disrespectful will get us nothing but trouble. I did not mean to be disrespectful but I did have questions about what was said. Perceptions, especially made on television, should be true. Trying to sell 'ideas' which are not true is clearly wrong to me. I have issues with the Karuk leadership only and not the members of the tribe. The few Karuks that I have met seem to be nice people.

Our club has been and still is being threatened, mining claims are in jeopardy, and a lot of money has been spent in the past and right now to defend our rights.

The Karuk leadership has always been on the offensive against small scale miners instead of drawing us into their cause. We could be allies in their fight for stronger Salmon populations, but they seem uncompromising.

I hope in the future new Karuk leadership and small scale miners will be friends so we can work together for a better Klamath River.

Re: Karok Indian Tribe
Wow your your heart is in the right place brother, you siad everything perfectly, there will always be some kind of disagreement somewhere but just imagine what it would be like if we could at least try to be a part of the solution. I think the natives would much rather have us smale scale miners in the picture ( if they trusted us ) rather than big companys coming in. I think we all agree on that!!! So
really believe it or not we are on the Karuks side we just need them to be on the New Niners side. We follow the regulations, we don't want the " white man " to take away our rights, we stay off their ceramonial areas during certain times of the year. If the Niners hadn't been in place and have had a solid foundation, than when gold prices go up the Karuks would really have a problem on their hands period!
