Weather at Happy Camp?
Hello to all- we're planning a trip to the Klamath starting on Memorial Day- what is the weather like around Happy Camp? Also, how is the level of the river right now? Thanks, any replies appreciated.

That looks like readings and forecast up on Slater Butte. They're showing a current temp of 33 degrees and overcast right now, but it's clear as a bell and 50 degrees here at Thompson Creek Lodge @ 8:30AM. Hi temps are at least 10-15 degrees below what we've been experiencing in the valley. I've been here since Apr1 and the weather's been generally nice. April was cool and wet and the river was high and brown(I'm sure all the fish have suffered greatly,..............it's as if there was a dredge every other foot running night and day). May's been great. Dry, mid-70's most days. Cool nights in the 40's. River has come down a bunch and cleared up some. Still running quite bit higher than what you're used to if you're more of a summer visitor, but with very little rain in the forecast it'll continue to drop. Many of the small feeder creeks have already dried up.

My forecasts are saying low 70's and sunny over the weekend with temps climbing into the low 80's by the end of next week with no chance of rain.

Thanks! Do you think the river is too high for sluicing? It's our first time up there and don't know what to expect. We are still new to prospecting and can use all the help we can get! We'll be at the weekend outing on the 2nd.

you know that any "slucing" you do in the river, I.E., the sluice box is sitting in the river water, , the material has to come from within the river, not from the bank material outside of the water, don't you?.

Yeah- but is the river running too deep and too fast? We made a wooden 5' sluice box- haven't tried it yet- don't now if there's any where along the river to sluice- is it too deep? Etc. We've never been there before-only sluiced on small streams- built little dams to divert the water- etc. We are just trying to find out what the Klamath is like before we get there! Thanks S&K

We don't actually have that rule down here.

You just have to avoid sluicing material which has excessive silt in it. Here are our surface mining guidelines

Sorry Dave, I thought that was a Fish & Game requirement.

They told me I could not "introduce" new material into the stream.
I specificaly asked if I could clean bedrock crevices above waterline and sluice the material. They said no, but I could pan it in the river..go figure.

It's okay, Harry. There are so many government guys these days, you get a different answer from each guy you talk to.

Next thing you know it, they will be arresting the parents of kids playing on the beach with plastic digging toys!

The problem with asking for permission is that they always say no, even when they have no jurisdiction. The real problem is that there are so many government guys, they don't know what to do to stay busy. So they get all involved with things that are of no real consequence.

But that should all change when they finish running out of money. Won't be long now!

America used to be a country where we didn't have to ask for permission to do even the smallest things! It will be nice when we get back there.

Oh my God, Dave -- they can't run out of money and leave all those welfare recipients to starve!! What are they ever gonna do, since they don't know how to hold a job -- or even how to get one, for that matter???

If you ask for permission, NO, will be followed with an explanation as to the fact we haven't been able to decide if it's going to aggravate someone.

Can a prospector ever be 100% within Government type limits? No, never. Be a good person and do your prospecting while you still can. Time is short.


8369 is right....

The New 49ers are still trying to teach people how to scratch out an income for themselves. The check don't come in the mail, it's called earning one's daily bread.

It's hot and getting hotter. 102 past 2 days and more on the way. This is dredging weather.

Dave- we made it to Happy Camp- thanks for the info on sluicing. We ended up not making it to the outing- things came up- but we had a great time camping on K-16 (nice shady spots and we met a great couple from FL- J and Anna) and working on K-17. Just a shout out to you- when we arrived on Mon (Memorial Day) you were helping Jon wash the outside of the 49er'sbuilding. You took the time to answer our questions on the camping and really helped us learn about the Happy Camp area and how to navigate around the claims. Thank you. We basically recovered flood gold- not a lot, butit was pretty exciting to us to finally dig our own gold! Again, thank you- we're working on becoming life members (money's short right now)! Steve & Kathy
