Well we are getting setup up and things are moving along. It might a low water season as the boulders are getting tricky to get through. Already found gold in a couple of places!! Be in touch with you all later!

Well the weather changed for the past few days and we are still at it. Lots of trees and such floating down. Off for some groceries! Caught half of a 8 inch dredge and saw a sunk 5. See ya!

Scott, what dredge did you end up taking to Chicken or are you at the pay-to-dredge site? Best wishes up there and keep us informed.

Was up on the Forty Mile the last two years. Saw the main stem rise 22 feet in 24 hours in 2010. Not much beter last year as the water was high and muddy most of the season. I am glad to know I am not missing a dry year with the river at a low stage but my heart goes out to you. Just when you thought you have moved your equipment up high enough, you beter add another 10-15 feet up the hill. Road was washed out to Eagle and Chicken from the Forty Mile Bridge in 2010. Thought I would sit this year out going to the Forty Mile. My elbows are still out of socket from long arm dredging

I was trapped on the Taylor Highway for a week by washouts in 2010, after only getting a couple of poor dredge days in high, coffee colored water on the Forty Mile, during a two week stay. The rest of the time logwood was floating past camp at the rate of about one hundred cords per hour. Not dredger friendly conditions to be sure.
Wishing you low water and good gold ... lord willing and the creeks don't rise!!! |

Is he up on the Kougarok River? I know some folks out of Washington State that are up there. Got an email about a week ago that the barge finally got in, which had his new dredge on it. He did not say anything about the river level, so he might be dry also.

The main stem looked like one of those old movies where they were logging in Oregon and floating the logs down the river. We could have walked across the main stem on the logs during about a three hours. Land slides souded like TNT going off and then you would hear all the tree and tundra coming down the hills. Saw perma frost about 4 foot thick breaking loose with the tundra and trees.

Yep the water rose within 2 inches of are fire pit about 7ft up! It's now down 6ft and falling.... till it rained all night! Might have found a pay streak in one place and still need to finish off 2 holes where we ran into boulders. It was hard pack not much fines but a couple of match head pickers showed up on top of the boulder pack. So the winch is ready to go!! 6 to 7ft down of hard pack bedrock is not going to be to much further down. The only man made thing in the hardpack was 100 year old steel buck shot that's it. We think it came from the top of the hard pack layer nothing else in there not even bird shot. Be in touch!!

Hey Bill we have a six and a eight up here. Glen has various dredges up here. We saved 1/2 of a eight floating down and found the owner. One twin engine 5 went under while tied to a tree, but it's still there. Off to Fairbanks now be in touch later folks!!

Colo,
When you see Glen tell him Wes from Kentucky said hang in there, looks like it going to be another wet year on all of ya'll on the Forty Mile. Maybe September and October will be beter as the river falls down to winter heights and clears up. Just wishfull thinking. |

Yep he's looking at message. Key word there is winter! It looks like by the time we get back to camp the weather gets better. I just hope all that rain stays low long enough for some more sample holes. We just did a change up on the 8 to what some of the more experienced guys are running here on the sluice box. We where both surprised that the flow could look that smooth out of a 8! So a test will happen in the next day if the weather holds.

Probably not lol. Funny thing is the rain needs to stay out of the water shed your working in. You could have blue sky and the river could come up. Or it could rain on you and drop 2 ft, this place is weird!! I'm noticing that if the tundra is dry it can act like a sponge and not release the water. Now I see why so many use sticks and rocks as markers everyday to see what the water level I trying to do.
Also watch where you leave your dredge during rain, ricks come off the bluff walls or landslides can occur. We where denting in camp watching 20x20 inch slabs come off and hit the water!! |

Oh let's get into the bears a bit. Everyone talked about the bears and was like watch out!! Saw one 500 lb black bear on the road outside Chicken. Nothing is coming in our camp. Probably saw me eating everything in sight and said forget that!
Now some guys have raven problems, and let me tell ya there are almost like pack hunters with look outs and the whole nine yards. Some guys from Washington got hit so hard they took there diving gloves a dozen eggs, chips, etc It was so bad that they came back in for a food run and Meds. So... Latching bins, burn all cans, then toss, any dish that is to dirty fill with water and soak it. We think are camp is in the middle of a moose crossing. They come from both sides of the river and swim across. Should have taken a video of it. Berries are not ripe yet, blueberries, salmon berries, and wild roses are all over the campsite. Blueberrie pancakes soon! Yummm |

We had a black bear in our camp last year. Got into the cook tent and into several cans of ravioli. Looked like 30-06 holes in the cans where the teeth went through the can. Got into several storage bins and got my last Texas Cinimon roll and then headed for our sleeping tent. Luckly we had run an electric fence around the sleep area and when he hit the fence it knocked him down and he groweled and headded down to the river. Never came back after he got into the electric fence.
Had grizzly tracks down at the river where I was dredging. Looked like a sow and a cub. Everytime I would pull the boat up to park it had a loaded 12 ga. with 00 buck and slugs and keep it on the dredge with me. I would make a lot of noise before I got out of the boat like shouting " Go away Bear". Had to go up into some willows on the river bank to tie off the boat. Did not want to meet up with a sow grizzly and her cub. if camp Eddy is in Chicken get him to tell you the story of the grizzly in his camp one year, where he just about pulled the trigger on one. Talk about swiming, these bears swim about as fast as they travel on land. Was headed back to the forty mile bridge in the sled boat and just had started down the falls when a black started swiming across the river. The current was strong in the falls last year but did not bother the bear. Like to have run right up on him. Could not slow down, going down the falls. Going up the falls is a different story and will tell you about two of them in the next post on Thursday. |

Hey Gary, got the boat towed off the river and we are back in Tok. No gold although it has now been located. Came down with a medical thing if I dive I could screw myself up, so I will be back in Denver this Thursday. More than likely it will be a surgical thing so if it is not to much money I will try to come out for a visit but it's really hard to say now.
