Can't hear much since it has not happened yet.
I do know that our lobbyist has well over a thousand letters to distribute to legislators and Wiggins. It is still not too late to write, the more the better.

Hey Guys whats your take on this? SACRAMENTO, 28 April 2009 - California's Senate Natural Resources Committee today passed SB 670 (Wiggins) with bi-partisan support, placing a temporary moratorium on the issuance of recreational suction dredge mining permits by the Department of Fish and Game (DFG) until a thorough scientific review of the impacts is completed and regulations are revised. The bill will next go to Senate Appropriations for consideration and approval before going before the full Senate. The bill includes an urgency clause, requiring 2/3 vote to pass in each house, which would result in the law going into effect immediately upon signing by the Governor.
Elizabeth "Izzy" Martin, CEO of The Sierra Fund, testified at the request of Senator Wiggins on the importance of the bill. "In light of the state's budget crisis, we are concerned that funding for the review and rule-making will be slowed down, and the review could take years. We are also concerned that the well-documented impacts of suction dredging on water quality and endangered species will continue while this environmental review is underway, despite evidence of the harm of suction dredging." Suction dredging disturbs fish habitat, putting endangered species such as Coho salmon and green sturgeon at risk. In addition, repeated government studies have shown that suction dredge activities disturb and mobilize the mercury left behind from gold mine operations. Gold miners in the 19th century used an estimated 26 million pounds of mercury to extract gold from ore in California, with an estimated 13 million pounds lost to the waters and soils of the Sierra Nevada and Trinity Mountains. Suction dredgers often encounter mercury and gold-mercury amalgam, which tend to fall into the cracks of the riverbed like gold. Dredgers collect the mercury and amalgam, and treat it to release any gold that may have amalgamated with the mercury. They then recover the mercury and usually store it, though some miners dispose of it in an unauthorized manner, such as pouring it back into the river, onto the ground, or in to municipal sewer systems. Suction dredges re-suspend and "flour" mercury, increasing the surface area and making it more readily available for bacteria to methylate. Methylmercury has been a regulatory concern of the State for years due its known serious effect on human health. "The rules that govern this practice are woefully outdated," noted Martin. California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) was ordered by the California courts to undergo a CEQA review and rule change as a result of a lawsuit filed in 2005. The courts ordered DFG to complete the review and make appropriate rule changes by July 2008, but DFG has not met this deadline. The Sierra Fund has worked with the state's leading scientists as part of our Initiative to assess and address the impact of gold mining on our state. Our report, Mining's Toxic Legacy includes research developed by the US Geological Survey as well as SWRCB on the impacts of suction dredging. The full text of Mining's Toxic Legacy with photos of suction dredging activities can be downloaded from The Sierra Fund's website: www.sierrafund.org/campaigns/mining |

Are the permits already issued still valid for the rest of this year? Same rules?

It's time to send letters to the Governor's Office and let the "Terminator" put an end to the liberal, tree-hugger, nut bag, global warming alarmist, pack of lies! If we don't voice our opinions, we won't be able to do anything in OUR Country anymore.:whoohoo:

I would like to see Elizabeth "Izzy" Martin, CEO of The Sierra Fund and her group take on the cause of Protecting our Borders, Language and Culture. Now that is a real threat to everyone.

Question,
If the unthinkable happens and this bill passes and you have a 2009 permit, will it be revoked or still be good for the remainder of the year? |

Get ready for all kinds of new regulations on the Federal level to be implemented ,New Mining Laws, Gun Control, land grabbing, road closing, taxes, ect as today Veteran Republican Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania switched parties with a suddenness that seemed to stun the Senate, a moderates defection that pushed Democrats to within a vote of the 60 needed to overcome filibusters and enact President Barack Obama's top legislative priorities. Specter's switch leaves them with 59 Senate seats. Democrat Al Franken is ahead in a marathon recount in Minnesota. If he ultimately defeats Republican Norm Coleman, he would become the party's 60th vote — the number needed to overcome a filibuster that might otherwise block legislation. The hooligans in Washington do not listen to what the citizens want. The majority of Americans want the borders enforced but you see that does not happen, instead that set the border patrols hundreds of miles inside the American Border on a East-West Highway to set up a road block to protect our border. Spector switched parties for his own personal gain as he knew the republicans would vote him out in the 2010 election. Listen to what he says : http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/player/popup/?rn=3906861&cl=13205216&ch=4226713&src=news you are Right in One Aspect We need to Unite Together and Voiced Our Opinions, we won't be able to do anything in OUR Country anymore |

Dont know the proper way to post the link,so I just copy and paste, not sure what will happen...Anyway it is an interview with "Izzy" Martin, wherein she explains that out of state miners join the 49ers because dredging is illegal in every other state, including Alaska. (Amongst other gems.) How are these politicians able to just make up "facts", with no basis in reality? No offence to anyone, but I am seriously losing my faith in this country, or at least those leading it....Just nuts |

I sat there and listened to those lies and I just wanted to get up and scream at these people, but I stayed in my seat and was quiet, not making a sound. It sure got my blood boiling listening to Senator Wolk and Senator Wiggins with their half truthes and false statements, especially Sen. Wolk who was angry for losing AB1032 last year. "Maybe you will do better than I did last year", she said to Sen. Wiggins as she was presenting her bill SB 670. You could just tell that they did not know one end the dredge from the other or what was going on underneath the water. I guess if other people feed them lies than that is all these Senators will know.

Can you buy dredge permits in advance for the upcoming years?

Here is where our leaders stand on the immigration issue:
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently called immigration enforcement "un-American." And Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano last week astounded her tens of thousands of immigration enforcement officers by announcing that crossing the U.S. border illegally was not by itself a crime! I would bet that Izzy is on board with the other hooligans in Washington to open our boarders and bankrupt the social security system based on the lies that were told in the interview concerning suction dredging. Never knew but a few of our elected officials that did not lie to the American public, so that puts Izzy right in there with the rest of them. |

colo_nuggets, I can't answer that question, I would think the answer is no though. You should call fish and game and ask to be sure.

Wiggins bills move forward
The Times-Standard Posted: 04/30/2009 01:15:49 AM PDT ........ Senate Bill 670 The bill would prohibit the use of suction dredge mining equipment in the rivers and streams used by spawning salmon, pending a court-ordered overhaul of regulations governing the activity by the state Department of Fish and Game. Having passed the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Water with an 8-3 vote, the bill is headed for the Senate Appropriations Committee. ....... |

This bill should go through the same process as AB1032 did. Slow and long arguments.
Keep the donations coming into our "Legal Defense Fund" folks. We have gone through this before and it taks lots of money pay our specialists to hold our ground. ...... Jim ... |

We need to support the representatives that voted against it and send them the Happy Camp video and any other
pr material that will help them keep defending the rights of miners and the public. Where is the Keene Dredge family on this ? Do they have the same lobbyists as the 49ers ? How about some media attention that is pro miners rights ? Someone living in Sacremento should park their suction dredge in front of the Capitol and educate the public on what dredging is and start to make some noise. I can't believe how corrupt that Wiggins is. I hope she doesn't have any illegals mowing her lawn or cleaning her house. I'll give up $500.00 towards hiring the PI to investigate her and the other hacks that want to ban suction dredging. We should get some help from the Attorneys that represent the open pit mining corporations. Maybe they'll help defend against this legislation if they were to know that Wiggins and the Sierra Club are coming for them next. Eric |

Eric, Keene does a lot in support of mining and miners, they just don't toot their own horn about it.
There are ways of supporting those who do the actual fighting without involving their whole corporation and this is what they and other big outfits do.
