I am being told by locals in Gold Hill that the Rogue is raging and brown! I suspect It will be a while before anyone will see the bottom of the river.

You are correct Dave, I took a ride over to the Rogue River Monday. The pic's below are of the river from the old Gold Ray Dam site down to the old power house just up river from the town of Gold Hill. ![]() This is the spot were Gold Ray Dam was removed. This pic is the old abandon Gold Hill power house just up river from the town of Gold Hill. This is as far as Dave Mack, Shawn, and myself were able to go in Dave's boat last summer when the river was at normal stage. There are rocks that can't be seen because of the high water, that we tied the boat off to last summer. They are now under about 10 to 15 ft. of water. ........ Jim Yerby.. |

Thanks Guys. The pictures are nice Jim. Somehow it doesn't look any different from this summer!. It will probably look like this for many winters until all that dirt washes down slowly winter by winter

ratled,
The Rogue is a very big river, bigger that the Klamath. There is a huge amount of water going down it right now. Maybe it will wash some of that silt that was behind Gold Ray Dam farther down toward the ocean. When they broke that dam there was about 18 inches to two foot of silt deposited on the bottom of that river. Across from the boat landing below the dam site there was deposited a small sand bar. I hope it gone by this summer ? ...... Jim |

Is that brown water from the dam on down? Or is the river muddy brown upstream of the dam as well?

The second pic is where Gold Ray Dam originally stood. The last pic is about 3 to 4 miles down river at the old Gold Hill power house about 3/4 mile up river from Gold Hill. The water is much more muddy at the old power house, which is down river from Gold Ray Dam site.
I was told that there was about 840,000 cubic yards of silt and sediment sand built up behind Gold Ray Dam, and the back water of Kelly Slough. ..... Jim |

When I was up there the first part of January, the brown water was coming from above the old dam. In Jim's second picture of where the old dam actually was, you can see that the brown water does not start there. I did not drive any farther upstream than that so I don't know exactly where the muddy water was coming from. Bear creek through Medford was also muddy. It may just be normal run off.
Thanks for the pics Jim. Mark |

UncleMark,
The water at the old dam site is normal for this time of the year on the Rogue. The water in the last pic is approx. 3 to 4 miles down river from the old dam site and is very much more muddy. Its coming from the silt and mucd that was backed up behind Gold Ray Dam. ... Jim ... |

Any estimates as to how long before it clears up?

Scott,
Its hard to tell because of the amount of silt and mud that was deposited when Gold Ray Dam was breached. We have had a very wet winter so far this year, warm rain on top of snow pack up high, and a better than average snow pack. We have about four more months of rain till summer, rains here till early to mid May. There will be more rain this winter and spring to wash that muddy silt out (I hope). We will just have to wait and see. .... Jim |
