Super typhoon Haiyan aims at Philippines; 'significant loss of life' predicted ( 14:33:09 ThuNov 7 2013 )

Hello Dave,

I saw this news report today and immediately thought of you. I hope you will be safe and secure through the storm. We'd hate to lose you, my friend! Be safe and please let us know you are okay when the storm has passed. We'll be worried about you!

Thanks for thinking of me, Jim!

I'm located north of Manila, so the storm is sliding by to the south of me. Overcast here, but no wind.

But I gather they are really getting slammed in the south, with some wind gusts as much as 235 mph!

Scooters smartly stepped up his visit here from the far south a day early (yesterday) and managed to get to Manila just ahead of the storm. Good thing he did that, because most of the southern domestic flights are cancelled.

Check out this picture!

I just saw a report on CNN that this may be the most powerful storm in recorded history.

I just got a text from Scooters. He is waiting for a bus to depart Manila. Says the rain and wind are starting to pick up there. Sounds like he is one step ahead of the storm.

I have been in several hurricanes, some of which were pretty big, but it is still hard to conceive wind gusts of 235 mph. How does one even imagine the greatest storm in recorded history? Awe inspiring doesn't begin to describe it!

Take care and be safe. It could become quite an adventure!

Just a follow up: Scooters arrived safely from down south, spent 2 nights and has since departed for the U.S. We only saw a little rain and wind, as the force of the storm all slid by to the south of us.

Central Philippines was clobbered by this storm.

I have been to Talcoban several times, where they are predicting as many at 10,000 people may have died. In fact, Tacloban was one of my favovite places in the Philippines. The airport terminal there, which was completely destroyed, was a world class facility.

My guess is that we will be shocked even more as access is gained to other areas that were hit hard, but which have not been receiving any assistance yet from the outside world. Jason Inks and I explored a big part of central Philippines several years ago, and access is difficult to most of it even on a nice sunny day.

It's good to hear from you. We are glad you missed most of the storm. Our news report says the Phillipines was hit by 24 typhoons this season, and that an average of 20 hit each year. That is almost impossible to imagine. It will be some time before all of the damage can be assessed. Our prayers go out to all those that have suffered through the storm. Be safe Dave!

Yeah; it brings tears to my eyes when I watch the suffering on television. So many people caught by surprise from a 10-foot storm surge into the city. The grim reports are just starting to come in from some of the more remote islands.

Has anyone heard from yellow fever. He spends the winters in the Phillipines and dredges the Rogue in the summer.

I was very lucky to miss this typhoon. But what an adventure. First Angeles City and then Subic Bay and then Manila again and I was off to the US. I had a bank problem and I had to travel to the US to solve the problem, but being a humble, lowly rice farmer I was a little intimidated to land in the large cities along the west coast. Where else do you go to solve your financial problems but Las Vegas. Heck, and while I am going Vegas why not stay at the Gold Nugget Casino since I am a gold dredger.
I checked into my room and made a bee line to the penny machines (because I am a high roller) and never noticed "this" until I almost checked out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRZJf2VTX9M. I won a small pot on the penny machine just before I left the casino.
I am back in the Philippines now and the news about the typhoons destruction is really sad. My wife and I donated 100 kilos of rice and 200 cans of sardines and we will do it again in a couple of weeks.
