Well,

More to the point, these kinds of things are often just email address harvesters - and the SPAM usually flows freely after you "register".

Petitions to lawmakers are often this kind of thing - after all - a lawmaker isn't interested at all in the views of a non-constituent.

I also never sign onto these on line petitions. The details you would need to include for a real petition to be effective are not something you would normally want to disclose on a non-secure page.

More likely, these are attempts at data mining for any number of reasons, perhaps by anti-mining activists to identify people who are on our side.

Even if he were interested, for the governor of a state to take a petition seriously, the names and contact details of every person would need to be verified. I don't believe that exercise is likely to happen on internet lists.

This from Snopes:

E-Mail petitions are NOT acceptable to Congress or any other organization. To be acceptable, petitions must have a signed signature and full address of the person signing the petition.

This is going to the governor and not Congress and I certainly can understand your concerns about data mining. But given the sophistication of current banners and search engines, they will get nothing they don't already have. Do I think this is some magic pill, heavens no. But recent events in the San Joaquin Valley shows is that the Governor responds to pressure. The Latino Water Coalition had been lobbying the Governor to declare a drought emergency in Ca for four months, and they were stonewalled. It appears that such a declaration would take the focus off of Governor Moonbeams pet projects, the twin tunnels, and the bullet train. Twenty five hundred farmers, farmworkers, and regular citizens road busses to Sacramento and held a rally on the steps of the capital. Every local mayor, councilman, asemblymen, state senator and the repulican congressmen attended. Two days later, Governor Moonbeam shows up in Fresno for a whirlwind tour. Two days later with his tail between his leggs he appears in SF before his green cronies and declares the drought. One week later President Obama whirlwind tour through the valley, trying to morph this into some sort of global warming issue? But by conincidence or by pressure, they were forced to act. And in my humble opinion with so few of us, we need something besides our judicial actions or everything written in the Last Chapter by Dave Mack will come to fruition. You just might want to listen to Dave and Jim as they have been around this block a time or two or dozens. A personal e-mail goes much farther than an online petition.

I am with you Oakview2, in spirit but not in reality.

The petition falls much too short in reconstructing our industry and existence. We've been rolled under, over, and through. I'll not in my lifetime be able to reclaim what has been stolen from me.

I'd be very willing to initiate recall-petitions, criminal charges and financial settlements. Make the aggressors redress the damages.

And echoing what Rod has posted, To make all those that have sponsored, promoted and passed laws filled with unrealistic rules and regulations totally accountable for their actions by whatever means that would be appropriate.

California Senate Leader Responds

Tom Heffernan

by Tom Heffernan

Petition Organizer

Hi All,

Earlier today a State Senator Darrell Steinberg responded to our petition. Senator Steinberg is President pro Tempore, or majority leader, of the California Senate.

His message was rather neutral, but at least this shows our message is getting through to our intended targets. I wrote a reply to Senator Steinberg and you can too. Just go back to the petition page and click on the "Full Response" link to expand the senator's message. You'll see the entire message and a box where you can write a reply.

The petition is still in effect and continues to grow and we are approaching another milestone. When we reach 500 signers Change.org will send another message to state lawmakers. When people post comments, those are also sent to lawmakers.

If you haven't already done so, please email your friends and ask them to sign the petition. You can also link the petition to your FaceBook page if you wish.

Thanks again for supporting the petition.

Thank you for contacting my office regarding your concern over the regulation on the use of vacuum or suction dredge equipment. I appreciate legislative suggestions some of the best bills come from engaged citizens who see a problem, and think of a good solution. As I understand it, you are suggesting legislation that would lift the ban on suction dredging for gold in California.

In August of 2009, California Legislature declared a moratorium on suction dredging permits and equipment because of its environmental and cultural impacts. In 2011, Senator Gaines introduced SB 657 which would repeal the moratorium, but the Senate did not pass this bill. Despite the moratorium, Californians may still collect gold with other methods such as gold panning.
Currently, there are no bills being proposed in the Senate regarding suction dredging. I do, however, take suggestions such as yours into consideration along with the many other suggestions I receive throughout the legislative year. I will carefully consider any bill like this that comes before me for a vote. If you would like to send me a specific legislative proposal, including which code sections you think should be added, changed, or removed, please do so.
You may wish to read more about the history and analysis of all bills online at www.leginfo.ca.gov/bilinfo.html . While you are online, please check out my website, www.sen.ca.gov/steinberg, to learn of community events and other issues in which I am involved.

I appreciate the time you took to share your views with me and hope you will continue to keep me informed of your opinions. If in the future I can assist you with another matter, please do not hesitate to write to me or call our district office at (916) 651-1529.

Sincerely,

DARRELL STEINBERG
President pro Tempore
6th Senate District
