My boulder moving winch ( 21:38:44 SunNov 25 2007 )

I finally finished installing my winch on the jeep.

It should work great for moving boulders. It is a 9500 lb winch with 94 feet of cable. It was a pretty good deal at $349. It took me a long time to cut and fit the stock Jeep JK bumber to make it fit and look good.

I gave it a quick test to make sure it worked. I have not tried to move anything yet--soon.

It only needs one more thing ....get rid of the steel cable and put on some amsteel cable.

Looks good!

Now, tell me how you are going to get the jeep up or down the river to where your dredge is?

Surely, you are not going to be dredging near a road.......

It doesn`t whip back an put a owee on you or the Jeep. It is lighter in wieght, it won`t get wickers, and is stronger than steel cable.

Lipca,

It is intended to be a multi-use winch. It will get the jeep out if (when) I get it stuck; I can use it out in the desert when drywashing- yes I can drive to where I drywash,.

When I am dredging there will be times when I can use it and times when I can't. And if I can't use it I will be no worse off than before when I did not have a winch.

I participated in the group dredging exercise last year on K15 and Dave Mac used his winch on the truck to move boulders. I certainly could have put my jeep anyplace he put his truck.

Thanks,

Ken

Nice looking installation Ken. Check a company called Truck & Tow www.truckntow.com null
They have a good selection of anchor straps and shackles, etc. that may work with your setup.

It never hurts to have some extra options and a bumper mounted winch is a good one. Hope to see you on one of the outing next year.

Ken: Be careful, you have a 9500lb. rated capacity winch mounted on a 1/4 to 1/2 ton rated vehicle. I would only trust it to try to pull 1/2 the gross weight of your vehical at best, if you have the rear of that vehical achored solid. That 9500 lb. winch can pull your jeep in two or elongate your frame. Dave's truck is a very heavy one ton rated vehical that is set up to take quite a beating (its a Ford!!), so be careful and good luck.... Jim ...

Hi Jim,

Thats pretty much what I had in mind. I bought the big winch because I did not want to have a 3000-4000 lb winch and try to use it at rated capacity. I wanted the winch that could be used at much less than rated capacity in hopes that it would last longer and not give me any trouble.

As you know I am careful sort of fellow and I don't intend to do anything to agressive.

Thanks,

Ken

Ken,

Looks great, but I will also warn you about that cable. I've seen many great looking rigs with damaged hoods and broken windshields from broken cable or fittings. Use caution and commons sense.

Mark is right on, be careful. being careful is more than just closing your eyes and gritting your teeth as you begin a pull. One of the best safety features you can practice is to never make a straight pull, always use pullies so that your pull is at right angles from you and the vehicle. That way if a cable snaps, the force is away from you and the truck.

Rich, you seem to have first hand knowledge about this Ansteel-Blue cable. Just how strong and durable is it? and is it reasonable in cost? I plan to set up a portable winch this coming season. I have used the old style cable many years ago and had very many close calls and bloody hands from the wire cable. Thanks for what ever info you can provide. .... Jim ....

I too have blue Amsteel on my winch. It comes in many colors. It also floats which can be a help. It's stronger than cable of the same size.....something like 14,500 for Amsteel and 9,500 for 5/8th steel. It cost a little more. THE BEST THING IS IT IS LIGHT!!!!! 100' weighs about 2 pounds....that cuts down the weight of draging the winch in big time. The down side is it's not as rugid. There are several good threads on Mike's fourm on this

Jim, I just bought this from this guy on ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/50-3-16-Amsteel-Blue-ATV-Winch-Cable-4X4-Warn-5-chafe_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ43984QQihZ010QQitemZ200178682721QQtcZphoto I have bought slings from him before & pleased with the product, A guy I sometime dredge with has the winch line on his gas powered winch and it is great. Like has been said it won`t whip back like a busted steel cable & what I like about it is it is soft an won`t get a permnant kink like steel , And no sharp wickers to stab you. light weight, floats. According to his ebay website he will cut you any lenght you want, for next dredge season I will also buy some extensions to reach out to pull that big boulder off of my Gold. good luck to all.

the winch is an Atlas Winch.

here is a link to the site where I bought it.

Ken

P. S. the winch comes with a mounting plate but I used a mounting plate that I bought at Harbor Freight instead. the harbor freight mounting plate was easier to adapt to the Jeep Frame- also it was 1/4 inch plate instead of 3/16 like the one that comes with the winch.
