Can enyone give me a pro or con as to the there preferance for the two RV parks in HC. I will not be able to check them out before I have to make my reservation. I hope this is not a touchy subject for a response. |

Rusty is the best authority on that as he lives in H/C and works in them all off and on doing repairs.

This past summer I spent 3 months at the RV park at the Klamath Inn Motel. 3 other fulltime Rv'ers/prospectors were parked adjacent to me in the first row. The remainder of the park occupants appeared to be permanent, non prospector year round residents.
It was my first year prospecting so there was lots for me to learn and the other prospectors were very friendly, helpful and provided a wealth of information. Had it not been for them I would have moved to another location after the first week. While the park/motel management was great the ah... neighborhood wasn't the best. I'd suggest a pass on this one. I drove through and visited with people who stayed at Elk Creek and will probably stay there next summer.

We stayed at Elk Creek last year, nice people there and plenty of shade when it gets hot.

I have stayed at both Siead valley and Steelhead. I also will not stay at Sieaad Valley again. Owners are a little different and constant flow of hikers through camp. Steelhead was really good with full hook up. It may be a little far upstream for your needs. It is just down the road from the Scott river intersect with the Klamath.

When it gets up to 100 degrees in the middle of July, shade is everything. Stay at Elk Creek. It is quiet, shady, and the folks are friendly and helpful. I've been there for several seasons and highly recommend it.

I don't know whether or not to envy you being in that circus down there. It's fun for a day or two, but after that???? Stop by the post office and tell Mike And Sybil that Lee says Hi

I'll stop by tomorrow and say Hi for ya. I'm hoping that they are the couple that I met while kayaking on the Klamath. I couldn't remember their names but they are responsible for my getting involved with the 49ers and spending the summer in Happy Camp.
Things are indeed getting crazier by the day here. What started out as a quick look at the 49er claims in 'Q' has turned into what seems like a never ending adventure. While I haven't found a lot of gold I did join the Quartzsite gem and mineral club and I'm working with them to turn some of my Klamath Gold into jewelry. One project I'm really excited about is casting a gold nugget ring.

All of the parks have their good and bad points. Elk Creek it the nicest by far but also the most expensive. The Klamath is the bottom of the list on quality and one of the cheapest. The other two fall in the middle and are located 20-30 miles from Happy Camp. If your prospecting is closer to Yreka they are a good choice. All but the Klamath are populated mostly by miners. As someone else stated the Klamath is unusual. About half of the park is occupied by a group of people that have nowhere else to stay. Drugs, drinking, and domestic problems are common as well as a few items growing legs of their own. The other half of the park during the summer months are mostly 49ers. Most people that stay there have no problems if the exercise common sense.

Important thing to remember is gas prices...Happy Camp Gas is one of the most expensive in the entire USA..I am sure it will be around $4.00 this summer..right now reg is $3.70...diesel $3.90....so if your going to mine around Happy Camp..stay at Elk Creek...it is a beautiful park..they will fill up fast..so book NOW..with the price of gold this yr...you can be sure LOTS of people will be here this summer..also..20 or 30 miles might not seem far..but you do not travel fast here...lots of curves...you do not want to waste time and money trying to get to your claim....good luck..Rich

Watch out for the Park in Siead. I could not get down to them last season because of the fires. I called to let them know I could not get through. They kept my $100.00 deposit anyway. Not right to treat a past customer that way.

The Siead park has been going through a couple of rough years. Rick finally sold out completely to Bruce last year so you should see a major improvement in management.

Actually, I think the Siead park is more central to most claims that any of the others, even the ones like Fisher's upriver.
I stayed the three or four years ago, before I moved down to the Klamath. I found it a good place to put your RV and in summer most of the park RV'ers are dredgers, so it makes for good fellowship in the evenings. There is also a cafe there under new management as well as a country store and post office.

I stayed in the Siead RV park for a few days last summer. I found it to be a good park - plenty of shade, ok neighbors and a good stay.
