Week-long Projects cancelled ( 21:22:32 ThuFeb 21 2008 )

After giving this considerable thought, I have decided to cancel all of the week-long Group Mining Projects that were scheduled for the 2008 season. The cancelled events can be found here:

http://www.goldgold.com/projects.htm

Please believe me when I say that nobody is more disappointed about this than I am. Week-long Projects have been one of the most successful and rewarding programs that we have ever done. In addition to all the fun members have experienced, week-long Projects have gone a very long way towards helping our members better-understand how to successfully follow a sampling plan, while also gaining some certainty that high-grade gold deposits are abundant along our mining properties.

The reason I am cancelling the week-long Projects this season is because of the ever-rising value of gold. The way things are going, we might see $1,100 gold (or even higher) before the season gets started!

These higher gold prices are nearly certain to bring more new members into The New 49’ers and onto our mining properties. I am concerned mainly about careful management of any expanded activity. Our careful management has been the foundation of our success as a mining organization. More activity by members along the river will certainly require more oversight by myself and other staff. This is to make sure our organization does not develop problems with the authorities.

The problem with the week-long Group Mining Projects is that they require nearly all of my time away from my normal duties as General Manager of The New 49’ers for at least 8 full days on each project. Added to the weekend Projects (which we will continue to do), I lose over 50% of my days as General Manager during the mining season. While we kind of got away with this during the past several years, I am very concerned that an influx of new members along the properties this season could change the dynamics in such a way that our organization cannot do without a fulltime General Manager.

Because of the potential risks involved, I am not comfortable in turning management responsibility for the organized mining Projects over to anyone else. I also do not want to give up my position as General Manager of The New 49’ers.

As my first priority must be to the overall health of The New 49’ers, I have asked Montine and Myrna in our office to make contact with the people who have signed up for this year’s week-long Projects and let them know we will not be doing them.

If you need to talk with anyone about this, Montine and Myrna can be contacted directly at (530) 493-2012 or at <montine49ers@goldgold.com>.

Once again, we will continue to do the scheduled weekend Projects.

Unfortunately, higher gold prices cut two ways. On the one hand, they make our whole program more valuable to others. On the other hand, they will require me to be focused more upon the bigger program to keep everything working the way it should.

Thanks for trying to understand!

Dave I'm sorry to here of the cancellation of the weeklong
Projects. I had a great time in the first dredging project
last year. I only wish we had found a new paystreak that week. Locating paystreaks was one of the main things I wanted to do.
I made new friends, learned a lot, and we got a good amount of gold. What a great birthday vacation it was.
This will be a great loss to new prospectors wanting to learn the tricks from an expert like you.

Dave,

I'm in the process of completing my paper work to become a full member of The New 49'ers. I'm far from being new to mining as I spent about 20 years in Alaska mining on a small scale. One of the reasons I'm more interested in becoming a member of your organization, than others, is the excellent training that you and your organization is famous for. From my perspective it appears that you are placing more emphasis on quantity than quality. From an economic standpoint I'm sure that the additional revenues all these potential new members will poor into your organization is difficult to resist, but on the other hand it may be a better plan to limit membership than to reduce the benefits that have made The New 49'ers so successful. I would consider increasing membership fees and hiring additional help before I reduced the programs that have made your organization what it is today. The increase in fees may also help to reduce the numbers of new miners and thus “kill two birds with one stone”. It is my sincere hope that being a member of your organization will continue the tradition of an excellent mining experience, as it has in the past and that I and other miners in your organization do not end up in a “free-for-all” during the 2008 mining season.

Just my luck, I just got back from mailing my deposit for the week long project when I read this post. My wife was even excited about the trip after she watched the 49er dvd. Hopefully the dredging projects will be back for 09.

I don't think think it will be a "free for all" unless you want to dredge in the same spot as other people. There is plenty of room on the 49er claims to find a spot to dredge. As pointed out in another thread it may be a little crowded in the full service camp grounds though but this has nothing to do with the week long projects.

I understand where you guys are coming from. Quality is the key concept!

As general manager, I am the one who must ultimately deal with the important problems or crises which happen along our mining properties. For a multitude of reasons, higher gold prices are going to increase the likelihood of problems which only I can deal with. That is a reality which comes from 22 years of managing The New 49'ers.

My worry was in having 25 people involved in a week-long project somewhere along the river with everyone planning upon my direct involvement. Then, when some important problem (or a bunch of smaller problems all at once) is/are happening elsewhere which require my attention, I was going to end up with 25 disappointed people on my hands; and rightly-so!

I'm just trying to avoid having a bunch of people feeling like I let them down.

With higher gold prices, the increased possibility of my being pulled away from the week-long projects was beginning to give me the feeling of being overextended; like I was committing to more that I can accomplish with a quality result.

My thinking is that the disappointment some people will feel because we have decided to cancel the projects is not nearly as severe as if we accept their money, and they arrive for a project in which I cannot participate!!

I am trying to direct my time and creative energy where it will do the most good. Making sure that the larger New 49'er program stays on an even keel seems wise under the present circumstances.

Dave, just make a few clones of yourself, that way you'll have enough for everyone to get a piece, lol. As far as the weekend projects, are non-members allowed to join those? And if so, what is the cost for a non-member?

if you join as an associate member, you can take part in any or all of the weekend projects for free.

I too am disappointed to hear of the cancelled week trips. I was planning on making arrangements with my partner for this summer. We have some experience on highbankers and was looking forward to learning more on dredges this year.

On your weekend trips, are they just beginner type trips, since they are so short or is there some dredging during the two days?

I will plan on making arrangements for the 2009 season, as soon as you list the dates.

Thanks for you hard work for all of us miners and to your staff as well for the support provide.

Harry, the weekend group projects are highbanking and sniping. Some use dry vacs also. BUT, there are no dredges on those. A lot of fun and a chance to meet a great bunch of new friends and fellow miners. Plus you get some gold. Forget the gold, the new friends are worth more than the gold.

Hello Harry,

The weekend projects for the upcoming season are scheduled as follows: June 7 & 8; June 28 & 29; July 19 & 20; August 9 & 10; August 30 & 31.

People have to be Full or Associate members to participate. There is no charge for 2-day projects. Everyone gets an equal share of the gold we find.

We cover all of the key fundamentals of sampling for high-grade gold deposits, and then go out and develop one in the field. While the activity on the 2-day projects all takes place above the water, the principles apply the same to underwater prospecting.

I look forward to crossing paths with you this summer!

Dave,

Thank you for taking time to address our concerns regarding the week long mining courses. What I'm having difficulty comprehending is that The New 49'ers does not have anyone else qualified to run one of these seminars. Isn't there another experienced dredger in the group who would be willing to step-up and make some certain money teaching one of these seminars? The dredging that I've done has all been self taught, in Alaska, and I was looking forward to learning sampling and other dredging techniques from a real professional. I can understand your concerns about managing the mining activities on The New 49'ers claims during this summer's gold rush, but I sincerely hope there is some way to rescue the week long mining courses that many of us looked forward to attending..

Thank You

Re: Week-long Projects cancelled ( 18:30:10 TueMar 4 2008 )

Hi Dave,

There is a lot involved in managing one of these programs.

It is somewhat of a "mission impossible" to pull 25 strangers together at the beginning of the week (maybe half of them as beginners); show them what to do; utilize their best qualities to locate and develop an underwater high-grade gold deposit (by mid-week); and still recover enough gold to make everyone happy by the end of the week -- without drowning anyone!

I manage to pull it off, mainly because I am so familiar with the Klamath River, where the gold path is traveling, and where high-grade has already been located by others. My Navy Seal background gives me a unique perspective on how to build a team and get as much as I can out of each of the players without breaking them. And I have very good helpers (who do not want to do the projects if I am not going to manage them) that handle important parts of each program (helping beginners get started, aggressive sampling, production mining, logistical support, emotional counseling and more) -- which I could not do without.

One person I know who could pull it off (to my satisfaction) is my original dredging partner, Eric Bosch. But he is living in Texas at the moment, working a very good job there and raising his family. Mike Higbee could also pull it off. But he is fully tied up with the Armadillo Mining Store in Grants Pass. Craig Colt could pull it off with the help the others who have been involved. But it,is not fair to ask Craig to manage Group Projects when he can just go out and operate his own dredge and make a few thousand dollars a day!

We have plenty of experienced dredgers in The New 49'ers. All of us learned by just getting out there and doing it. There is never going to be any substitute for that. All the Projects do is help get people started in the right direction. You would gain a similar result by working with other experienced dredgers on the river.

You might want to spread the word around that you would like to work with other experienced dredgers this season. You guys are free to launch your own dredging projects however you like.

Just getting involved with another experienced dredger or two, and doing your own thing, would be a heck of a lot simpler than trying to resurrect Group Mining Projects, as I have managed over the past few years, with a project manager who might not be able to pull all the essential elements together.

That's my best answer. Hope it helps
