Happy Camp area is fine all the fires are down around Dillon creek. Smoke is bad, even in HC but down that way it depends on the way the wind blows where it is bad or worse. Hwy 96 was closed for a couple of days near Dillon about a week ago and is open now. It doesn't look like the actual fire fire will be a problem by the time you get there, but we are having extremely hot dry weather so anything can happen. Here are a couple of sites that will give you official updates. http://inciweb.org/incident/1380/ and http://www.enplan.com/fires/

Ray Koons confirmed with the USFS yesterday that the Salmon River Road is closed at both ends to anyone that does not already live up there.

Otherwise, we are mainly just having to deal with smoke in the air, which seems to come and go, depending upon wind directions.

All 49er members can dry camp free on the claims. There are 3 RV parks in HC but they stay pretty full this time of year. Aug. will be better but you should call ahead and get a reservation.
