Swim Ear ( 05:31:35 SunDec 7 2008 )

Anybody remember Ottos' receipe for the ear wash we used during the dredge outings of 2007? I've had three ear infections this summer and I guess I need to clear my ears and use swim ear every time I get out of the water. I grew up in the water and honestly do not ever remimber not knowing how to swim, nor have did I ever had a ear problem. Now at age 54 I've suffered three infections in 5 months. Pisses me off! I remember he used isoprolpo alcohol and maybe some viniger. Any one know the reciepe?

The best remedy I am aware of is called "Domboro Octic Solution." While it requires a prescription, a squeeze bottle will last you for years. All my ear infection problems came to an end when I began using it (in 1982).

I use 50/50 alcohol and vinegar. The vinegar kills the germs and the alcohol drys out your ear. A drop of baby oil is needed after treatment or your ears will itch from being dry.
Hope this helps.

Great! Thanks for the tips, Dave & cowboy444. I'll give both a try. Hey Dave, any thoughts of firing up the dredge seminars this next season. I had a blast on the last one of the year in '07. I was on the 6" with Rick below savage rapids.

I have used this formula for years and it works best for me." One part rubbing alchol, one part white vinegar, one part Hydrogen Peroxide" (equal portions).
If ear infection starts use (Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates and Hydrocortisone Otic Solution USP) 3 or 4 drops in ear four times daily for 10 days. A doctor can prescribe this, clears ear infections up fast. ... Jim ......

I use the same mix as cowboy. We add the baby oil to the mix. A thin layer of oil floating on the top will blend in shortly when shaken well. My partners used to have ear problems constantly until they started using this.

I use the 50/50 mix too. My mining partner doesn’t - he forgets. Every year he sees the doctor for his ear infection so I know the 50/50 works! I use it every time I’m out for more than a plug up- break, lunch, fueling and end of day I do it once at the river, once at the truck and one more time at the RV.

For those that think this is a Klamath thing only don't be fooled - my partner had the 1st case of Yuba Ear this last June working just outside of Downieville

I was thinking about using ear plugs to help prevent infections. Any of you guys use "Doc's proplugs"? The scuba diver web sights seem to prefer this brand. Thanks for all the input on this problem, folks.

I use a mask called proear (not by choice but out of necessity) all the time and have had no problems with my ears

That seems like a great mask russm. Does it hold it's seal over the ears in fast water?
I always dry my ears after I get out of the water even if it is only for lunch or a break. Then I treat my ears at night with that 50/50, like ratled and cowboy444.

No issues with this mask. However, I do look a little funny with my ears sticking out when I use the hood. The hood designed for this mask allows the ear pieces to go inside the hood so my ears stay dry and equalized

My formula is 50% white vinegar and 50% hydrogen peroxide. I stopped using alchol because it made my inner ears too dry causing skin flaking. Also the fizzing tells me that I may have gotten something foreign in my ears. I also carry a bottle of rubbing alchol with a spray attachment. I spray myself, wife and dogs down with the alchol before getting back into the vehicle after dredging or an outing in the woods. This has prevented getting poison oak to which I am highly allergic. I have told others about this and it has worked for them as well.

Great responses and tips! Anybody else got a trick way of dealing with swimmers ear or poison oak? We have way more poison ivy up here in Idaho than poison oak. I wonder if the alcohol spray might work on that also? How about tips on fogging and leaking dive masks? Because I dredge in a creek that averages 3 to 5 feet to bedrock (oh yeah!) I'm thinking that there isn't enough pressure on my mask to seal well. The leaks aren't real bad but can be a pain in the a**.

I never had an ear infection using Domeboro Otic as Mac has said. I also have used the home made mixes the rest of you are talking about. The domeboro worked and did not cause any itching problems as some of the home made solutions do. Since I am not an MD, I cannot legally give you medical advice. However, I can recommend, I recommend the Domeboro. I have found a source on the internet so that I do not have to visit a doctor to obtain a prescription. http://www.rxpalace.com/products_domeboro_otic.htm
