Well, today the 29th of February I joined The New 49'ers. I guess that I will only be able to celebrate my anniversary as a member every 4 years. (hmmm, annual dues once every 4 years?) Now if I could only get my 60 year old body to age 1 year every 4 I could prospect until I am 100! I am a total newbie regarding prospecting, but I was born in Gold Beach and grew up on the Oregon coast and I need to get out of So Cal and come home. So I am starting to get my gear together (I am hoping someone can help me figure out what that should be) and be joining you all in May. With that introduction, what should I be looking for? My only experience so far is one day in the desert with a friend on his dry washer. Money is a bit of a concern so any used equipment or other recommendations are greatly appreciated. Just in case you are wondering, I decided on taking this up as a hobby, but would not turn down any opportunity to suppliment my income. I am willing to partner up with anyone that is looking for a an extra set of hands and some buckets. I am excited about this adventure and really looking forward to meeting and making new friends. Beammaker here in Wyoming: I am 64 and still have the itch, so you are welcomed by many of us elders in age.
We creak a lot at the beginning of each season, but loosen up with time and enjoy every second of the chase. Talk with Rusty in Happy Camp, and other seasoned dredgers and high bankers. Don't ever give up on the deserts for winter action. AND-----HAVE A GREAT TIME!!!!!! |

ancient1, go to as many of the free high banking classes that are offered by Dave. The schedules are listed on this site. The knowledge that you will receive is applicable to all types of mining. You will have class room instruction as well as practible apps. ie: working your butt off in the field.

Ancient 1, not a good handle. The club has a lot of members that out date you. Most every summer several in there 80s spend as much time as they can doing their thing along the river. The access to club claims is so varied that everyone can find places that fit their physical conditions. Some claims almost require repelling skills to get into. Others have wheelchair access while most fall in between.
About the only desert equipment that would be useful in Happy Camp is your metal detector and hand tools. Most everything else can be picked up at The New 49ers mining store in HC. as you need it. |

Well, The Ancient1 handle is one I have had for 10 years or more from my computer gaming days. I was always the oldest there. I will be happy to spend the next 20 years as a member of The New 49'ers and grow into the handle.
That being said, I am just hoping right now that I get laid off. I will be heading north within a week of that time. No disrespect to the working folks out there, but I have an itch that needs to be scratched. |
