In a dredge system what is the preference of flow, jet placement/or entry could introduce a spiral rotation,a vortex rotation,a straight laminer or highly turbulent flow etc.
What is the optimum flow and why. dick |

Power nozzle and power jet, each with advantages for the prospector.
Power nozzle I feel is best for shallow water where you do not lose suction when a gulp of air is swallowed. Preventing a vapor lock is the main goal. Power jet needs to be constantly submerged requireing deep water. If you gulp air vapor lock takes over, resulting in the jet blasting on thru the flair and sluice. No suction. |

True enough but what about the OP on flow characteristics?

In the original post I asked for an answer to which of the following flow characteristics is best in your opinion
#1 spiral rotation #2 vortex rotation #3 straight laminer #4 highly turbulent #5 etc.others What is the optimum flow and why. dick Post OptionsEditDeleteBump Thread |

Straight laminer is the best of these choices.
Inertia rules. Equal and opposite reaction. High pressure combined with high volume forcing the water within the barrel to maximum acceleration. The engine torque applied to the water pump is part of the equation. More power produces more inertia. Multiport injection, more the better, enables large bore dredges to highest efficiency. Just keep adding power. |

Thanks I don't know if I agree with you or you agree with me.I do think there is a stopping point for the smaller portable dredges, what that value is I do not know.

Dick, I have quietly followed your questions, both here and on another forum. You have me curious. What do you wish to accomplish? Construction of a better dredge? Or do you seek better understanding of "this is the way we've always done it"?

Hey Micro, thats very easy for me to explain.
I served two tours of duty in Alaska in the mid 50's & early 60's.We had operating gold mines with in 50 miles of our Radar Site and all Air Force personnel had a standing invitation to visit unannounced when ever we wanted. I took an interest and did a bit of sluicing my self on a claim we had recorded in the name of our "Barracks" This started it all way back then and I never lost that desire to enter that adventure, tho my family life would not allow it to go any further. The technology changed over the years and individual dredging was added of which I had not an inkling that it even existed. Then with the advent of all of these so called reality shows on the Discovery Channel in the recent past I became exposed to all this new way(at least to me) of finding and recovering gold. I being a highly curious individual need to know how things work if I'm going to be invloved even tho it will only be as a bystander from afar or a casual observer. I don't plan on ever building a better mouse trap but their no doubt are ways to do so.I was a designer in my working career for 44 years and so when I see something I don't understand I have this self taught, built in need to ask the question "What If and How". I hope I haven't become a pain to anyone in asking questions.I certainly can refrain if so. thanks dick |

Dick, please do not use those tv shows as a how to guide. The ground crew is a how to on how to commit suicide. Those guys are a disaster waiting to happen. Too much $$ with no knowledge. And leaving the the land all chewed up is why we are now fighting the enviro nuts. The Nome guys are also a disaster. I have been dredging for a day or two and have a PADI search and rescue card. These guys appear to have inferior equipment that they appear to do no maintenance on. These shows are good entertainment, but too much drama and little know how.

Try this. To feed that curiosity here are some good reads. http://www.goldgold.com/suction-dredging.html
Also look at getting Dave's books http://www.promackmining.com/mining_supplies/cart.php?m=product_list&c=43 At least the Dredgers Handbook. If you are looking for more then skip the handbook and just get Advanced Dredging vol 1&2. His videos are good too but I think you will get more from the books ratled |
