Passing of Bill Stumpf ( 03:09:54 WedNov 7 2012 )

I am sorry to report that long time 49'er and founding member, Bill Stumpf, passed away last night from a 6 month fight with cancer. He was 73.

Many of us remember Bill as the long time tour guide to the 49'er claims. He freely shared his knowledge of dredging, high-banking and mossing with many hundreds of miners, family's and friends. His knowledge of the Klamath river area and his ready helpfulness will be missed by many.

We actually started The New 49'ers with a meeting in Bill's house in Quartzsite, Arizona in early 1986.

Bill, and his wife at the time, Marcy, also helped me start the Pro-Mack Mining Supply store in Happy Camp during 1987. They played a very big part in organizing and managing The New 49ers all the way through the late 1990's. Bill managed all of the weekend mining projects for many years while I was busy on other things.

He was one of the most loyal friends I have had in this life. We went through a lot together, through thick and thin. I could write a whole book on just the adventures (and misadventures) we went through together. He was a very kind person, and had a lot of friends.

In lieu of flowers, a small donation to help with funeral expenses or sympathy letter can be made to his surviving wife, Jan:

I am sorry to hear this. I really enjoyed reading about the Stumpf family adventures. For those that didn't know them (like me) can read about some of their adventures here http://www.goldgold.com/stories-about-gold-mining-adventure.html

I remember spending the summer of 1989 staying in Bill & Marcia's attic.

They were both like parents to me.

Terri and I visited with Bill and Jan numerous times this last summer.

He will be dearly missed by both of us.

Jan told us that he went peacefully, thank God.

God speed Bill. Really got to know Bill up on the Salmon River. Very informative and helpful. Worked his butt off and stayed ahead of the young bucks. He will be sorely missed by the 49ers and the prospecting community. In the winter he stayed at a campground in Earp Ca. This is across the Colorado River from Parker Az. He was always close to the water.
