This was it's "maiden voyage" -- more of a shake-out run. We weren't in the best area because I didn't have enough weight to get into fast water. We also didn't run the whole time.
Ended up with a 3' deep hole -- cleaned up about 3 gallons of cons & netted about 200 small & mid-size flakes. Finished cleaning up this morning & it amounted to 1/8 of a dwt for about 2-1/2 hours run-time. It did very well. If I had enough weight to hold me on the bottom in the middle of the river, it would have done much better -- but I knew the area I was in had been dredged last season. Like I said, it was a shake-down run -- and it passed. The thing was that it is simply too much to handle for me. First of all, my brother was supposed to come up here from SoCal to help me run the dredge -- he never made it, so I am stuck without a "topside" person. Secondly, I had planned to put it in at a boat launch then tow it up or down river. The boat launch I reconed 2 weeks before had been torn up by 4x4's and was so bad that I couldn't get within 30-feet of the water. That necessitated finding some helpers, and it took 4 men to lift & carry it to the water. Once it was in the water, things got easier -- but it still takes another man on top to handle plug-ups, riffle loading, etc. And that is something that -- since my younger brother flaked out on me -- I just don't have. Bottom line is that it is just too much machine for me -- I can't run it by myself, despite everyone's well-intentioned suggestions. And with my financial/ income situation right now, I don't have time to play with. The dredge has to go. John |

j_e_smith: Do not give up on your 5 inch triple sluice. I finished recovery on double shoulder surgery back in 1996 on the Klamath using my 5 inch triple sluice.
Visit with Dave Mack and he will tell you that the patience shown in taking it slow and easy early will pay off in the long run. You can always get help launching and recovering. Patience is the word John. The gold will come. Good Luck "Newbie"-----Beammaker. Wyoming. |

I hate to hijack your FS thread but you started it-
Also picked up a couple of 5 gallon buckets & some concrete -- gonna make some anchors to hold the dredge in place. That should cut out some of the need for a "topside man". And I think that by being careful of what goes up the suction hose and regulating the rate of recovery I can completely eliminate the need for another person. To make it easier on yourself try 2 milk crates instead. Fill them with rocks at the site as you need them. Beats hauling those heavy buckets around. You can also put gear in them to make it easier to haul that to the water too ratled |
