Newbie Hello All
Hi my name is Sian I have a six year old rescued boxer x mastiff called Tyler who is a dream to have and have recently rescued a 9mth old white boxer who is deaf. He is loving, friendly and fairly obedient. He understands basic hand commands like sit, lay down and no. He looks at me when his food is put down and waits for the ok to take it and appears to understand facial expressions.

He's a good dog the only issues I have with him is that he bites his tail and in the three weeks I've had him his wound is not healing he also came with a wound under the eye that he won't leave alone and again isn't healing. He's seen the vet who put a head collar on him that totally freaked him out and he got off after 24 hrs. I don't think tunnelling the vision of a deaf dog is a good option and any tips of how to train him to leave it alone will be appreciated.

Re: Newbie Hello All
Thank you for the welcome and I look forward to getting to know everyone. I tried to buy a shock spray collar from petsmart but they'd sold out waiting for them to come in. Looks quite effective and comes with a remote. Hopefully that will do the trick. x

Hi + :welcomewhitestuff:

Your dogs sound lovely. Look forward to photos

You need to find out why he is working at his wounds - sounds like allergies to me. One of ours will scratch at her face until it bleeds with allergies. Has your vet tried antihistamines ?

Re: Newbie Hello All
Quick update on Tyson he has put on 1kg in a week and starting to look more like a boxer than a greyhound. The wound under his eye is healing well and he is booked in tomorrow to be castrated and have his tail amputated to just above where it is infected.

he is so excitable and friendly around people that he wacks his tail on everything and is constantly yelping in pain the tail doesn't stand a chance of healing as he makes it worse everytime he catches it and he can still reach it even with a large head collar so the best option is to shorten it.

Aww bless poor Tyson, such a shame when they need their tails docking. We recently had a story of a boxer in the same situation and, with a lot of patience and nursing, the tail is now completely healed and didn't need to be docked. I am of the opinions that a lot of vets see it as an easy option and always point out the poor reasoning behind docking when they do it - I wonder if you would have had same response if you took a labrador in?

That's me off my soap box ha ha

Hope the surgery goes well and good to Tyson is gaining weight and settling in. There is a lot of advice on deaf boxers on the "home" page of The Whitestuff.
