Please Help Hugo

Hugo is a white boxer i told you all about a while ago, his health has taken a turn for the worse & his owner and vet cannot pinpoint the problem, they thought it was a blood disorder, Hugo goes off his food, loses weight, faints suddenly and generally is lethargic, Hugo is quite small for his age, very quiet. He seemed to get better for a while then suddenly he is ill again,
The vet has him on steroids and other medication but it does'nt seem to be helping much, has anyone had any of these problems, any suggestions, anything at all, Hugo is only 3yrs and his owner is worried sick she is going to lose him, please anything you can think of that may help this gorgeous boxer will be greatly appreciated.

yvonne

If the vet doesnt know, I don't think I could assume to know more than them!

If I was to take stab in the dark .... first thing comes to mind is his heart, but then that would be checked and easily noticed.

He isn't getting hold of any poisons or is allergic to something he is getting hold of that is making him ill?

Re: Please Help Hugo

Sorry Yvonne really cant help you there.

I would have suggested maybe it was a heart problem.

Does he have a murmer at all?- although i am sure that the vet would have picked up on that immediately.

Hope he gets his problems sorted out soon.

Re: Please Help Hugo

I wonder if its some sort of allergy related problem. Is he eating something that he only gets occasional access to? If he goes off his food and loses weight, his tummy must be upset. Just a thought.

Has epilepsey been ruled out?

Re: Please Help Hugo

It is'nt diabetes, nis heart is fine, no epilepsy, this is really a strange one, I think the vet is testing him for allsorts but as yet no diaganosis,I will mention food changes/treats, allergies, Hugo is a lovely boxer I really hope he gets better soon, I have'nt seen him in a week or so, Hugo is only in Peebles when his dog sitter is looking after him, hopefully I will see him this week,

Even more sad news Kaia a 3yrs old boxer in Peebles has died due to heart problems, her owners say they would not have another boxer because of Kaia's health problems, is'nt that sad. Kaia was tiny for a boxer but absolutely gorgeous and extremely well behaved, I will miss seeing her walk passed my window with her frisbee in her mouth, she was so cute. Yvonne

Re: Please Help Hugo

That is great news Yvonne. If anything conclusive comes out of it, let us know as anything to do with Boxers is worth knowing.

Oddly enough until around now Rosie's skin problems are rife. Towards end December they start to die down - wonder if that is a coincidence - hearing about Hugo and his problems starting to die off.

Re: Please Help Hugo

Someone told Hugo's mum to give him a cup of tea every day, she did & he started to get better, maybe its a coincidence but Hugo's mum certainly believes it helps, Hugo is quite skinny, any hints as to how to get weight on him, he already eats well but does'nt gain weight, Yvonne

Re: Please Help Hugo

He sounds like Katie! Shes quite a lean article too. Rosie looks at food and gains weight. Katie has put on a little bit of weight though since she started to get a cooked dinner at night. Instead of giving them dog food at tea time [meal is split into 3, gives tummy less to digest at any one time] we put extra potatoes, veg meat or chicken on - what ever we are having and they get that with gravy - they love it. I suppose we really shouldnt give Rosie potatoes but she loves her dinner! If we are having a pasta or rice dinner, the dogs get the pasta or rice with some tinned dog food or chicken with gravy. Just adds variety.
Glad to hear he is doing so well.

Re: Please Help Hugo

I worried about Sasha bulking up as I felt she was on the scrawny side, but everyone on here advised against it, saying she would bulk out in her own good time.

To be honest, she eats plenty and doesnt get that much exercise (comparitively) but is still fairly lean. The vet says not to worry about it and that he prefers a lean boxer to an overweight one - less long term health probs!

Sasha has Burns' food which is a complete science diet type thing. Hardly any "wastage" which is good and not much wind - which is better!

At 3, Hugo is still fairly young and still has plenty of time bulk up - maybe he is just a small dog, I know Sasha is pretty small when I compare her to other boxers we know.
